Cadmium and Selenate Exposure Affects the Honey Bee Microbiome and Metabolome, and Bee-Associated Bacteria Show Potential for Bioaccumulation
Overview of the Main Propulsion System for the NASA Ares I Upper Stage
A functional overview of the Main Propulsion System (MPS) of the NASA Ares I Upper Stage is provided. In addition to a simple overview of the key MPS functions and design philosophies, major lessons learned are discussed. The intent is to provide a technical overview with enough detail to allow engineers outside of the MPS Integrated Product Team (IPT) to develop a rough understanding of MPS operations, components, design philosophy, and lessons learned
Effects of contaminants of emerging concern on Myzus persicae (Sulzer, Hemiptera: Aphididae) biology and on their host plant, Capsicum annuum
Effects of contaminants of emerging concern on Megaselia scalaris (Lowe, Diptera: Phoridae) and its microbial community.
Drought, rising temperatures, and expanding human populations are increasing water demands. Many countries are extending potable water supplies by irrigating crops with wastewater. Unfortunately, wastewater contains biologically active, long-lived pharmaceuticals, even after treatment. Run-off from farms and wastewater treatment plant overflows contribute high concentrations of pharmaceuticals to the environment. This study assessed the effects of common pharmaceuticals on a cosmopolitan saprophagous insect, Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae). Larvae were reared on artificial diets spiked with contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) at environmentally relevant concentrations. Female flies showed no oviposition preference for treated or untreated diets. Larvae exposed to caffeine in diets showed increased mortality, and larvae fed antibiotics and hormones showed signs of slowed development, especially in females. The normal sex ratio observed in M. scalaris from control diets was affected by exposure to caffeine and pharmaceutical mixture treatments. There was an overall effect of treatment on the flies' microbial communities; notably, caffeine fed insects displayed higher microbial variability. Eight bacterial families accounted for approximately 95% of the total microbes in diet and insects. Our results suggest that CECs at environmentally relevant concentrations can affect the biology and microbial communities of an insect of ecological and medical importance
Derivation of Delay Equation Climate Models Using the Mori-Zwanzig Formalism
Models incorporating delay have been frequently used to understand climate
variability phenomena, but often the delay is introduced through an ad-hoc
physical reasoning, such as the propagation time of waves. In this paper, the
Mori-Zwanzig formalism is introduced as a way to systematically derive delay
models from systems of partial differential equations and hence provides a
better justification for using these delay-type models. The Mori-Zwanzig
technique gives a formal rewriting of the system using a projection onto a set
of resolved variables, where the rewritten system contains a memory term. The
computation of this memory term requires solving the orthogonal dynamics
equation, which represents the unresolved dynamics. For nonlinear systems, it
is often not possible to obtain an analytical solution to the orthogonal
dynamics and an approximate solution needs to be found. Here, we demonstrate
the Mori-Zwanzig technique for a two-strip model of the El Nino Southern
Oscillation (ENSO) and explore methods to solve the orthogonal dynamics. The
resulting nonlinear delay model contains an additional term compared to
previously proposed ad-hoc conceptual models. This new term leads to a larger
ENSO period, which is closer to that seen in observations.Comment: Submitted to Proceedings of the Royal Society A, 25 pages, 10 figure
Gold-Gold Bonding: The Key to Stabilizing the 19-Electron Ternary Phases LnAuSb (Ln = La-Nd and Sm) as New Dirac Semimetals
We report a new family of ternary 111 hexagonal LnAuSb (Ln = La-Nd, Sm)
compounds that, with a 19 valence electron count, has one extra electron
compared to all other known LnAuZ compound. The "19th" electron is accommodated
by Au-Au bonding between the layers; this Au-Au interaction drives the phases
to crystallize in the YPtAs-type structure rather than the more common
LiGaGe-type. This is critical, as the YPtAs structure type has the
symmetry-allowed band crossing necessary for the formation of Dirac semimetals.
Band structure, density of stats, and crystal orbital calculations confirm this
picture, which results in a nearly complete band gap between full and empty
electronic states and stable compounds; we can thus present a structural
stability phase diagram for the LnAuZ (Ln = Ge, As, Sn, Sb, Pb, Bi) family of
phases. Those calculations also show that LaAuSb has a bulk Dirac cone below
the Fermi level. The YPtAs-type LnAuSb family reported here is an example of
the uniqueness of gold chemistry applied to a rigidly closed shell system in an
unconventional way.Comment: 32 pages, 8 Figure
