Veteran politics: Soldiers and the White House In the relatively short history of the United States, military servicemen have managed to find their way into the White House with remarkable regularity. The nation\u27s first executive, George Washington, set the precedent serving a...

Statistically Designed Experiments in the Examination of Factors Influencing Regioselectivity in Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Reactions

    Get PDF
Statistically designed experiments were developed and executed in order to determine the effects of several variables on the regiochemistry of electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions. One experiment employed the electrophilic aromatic bromination of phenol, and indicated that temperature and concentration had statistically insignificant effects on the product composition of the reaction , while the mole ratio of bromine to phenol and percent water content of the solvent had significant effects at the 95% confidence level (i.e. a=0.05). Another experiment investigated the Friedel-Craf ts acylation of three butylbenzene isomers, and showed that temperature and reaction time had insignificant influences on product composition, while solvent dielectric constant and substrate substitution pattern had a significant influence (a=0.05). Together these experiments suggest that chemometric methods may be useful in investigating even well understood reactions. The Friedel-Crafts acylation experiments also the initial stages in the development of a quantitative method for describing steric effects. Inaddition, a laboratory exercise was designed and incorporated into Longwood University\u27 s Organic Chemistry Laboratory II course. The implementation of the exercise was evaluated and suggested that students are receptive to new teaching styles

Design of the advanced regional aircraft, the DART-75

    Get PDF
This design analysis is intended to show the capabilities of the DART-75, a 75 passenger medium-range regional transport. Included are the detailed descriptions of the structures, performance, stability and control, weight and balance, and engine design. The design should allow for the DART to become the premier regional aircraft of the future due to some advanced features like the canard, semi-composite construction, and advanced engines

Stability of hyperbolic groups acting on their boundaries

A hyperbolic group acts by homeomorphisms on its Gromov boundary. We use a dynamical coding of boundary points to show that such actions are topologically stable in the dynamical sense: any nearby action is semi-conjugate to (and an extension of) the standard boundary action. This result was previously known in the special case that the boundary is a topological sphere. Our proof here is independent and gives additional information about the semiconjugacy in that case. Our techniques also give a new proof of global stability when the boundary is a circle.Comment: v2: 22 pages, 3 figures. Added result about cell-like fibers in the sphere case, and a new proof of a theorem of Matsumot

Transit Analysis Package (TAP and autoKep): IDL Graphical User Interfaces for Extrasolar Planet Transit Photometry

    Get PDF
We present an IDL graphical user interface-driven software package designed for the analysis of extrasolar planet transit light curves. The Transit Analysis Package (TAP) software uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques to fit light curves using the analytic model of Mandel and Agol (2002). The package incorporates a wavelet based likelihood function developed by Carter and Winn (2009) which allows the MCMC to assess parameter uncertainties more robustly than classic chi-squared methods by parameterizing uncorrelated "white" and correlated "red" noise. The software is able to simultaneously analyze multiple transits observed in different conditions (instrument, filter, weather, etc). The graphical interface allows for the simple execution and interpretation of Bayesian MCMC analysis tailored to a user's specific data set and has been thoroughly tested on ground-based and Kepler photometry. AutoKep provides a similar GUI for the preparation of Kepler MAST archive data for analysis by TAP or any other analysis software. This paper describes the software release and provides instructions for its use.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

A 125GeV Higgs Boson and Muon g-2 in More Generic Gauge Mediation

Recently, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations reported exciting hints of a Standard Model-like Higgs boson with a mass around 125GeV. A Higgs boson this heavy is difficult to realize in conventional models of gauge mediation. Here we revisit the lightest Higgs boson mass in "more generic gauge mediation," where the Higgs doublets mix with the messenger doublets. We show that a Higgs boson mass around 125GeV can be realized in more generic gauge mediation models, even for a relatively light gluino mass ~1TeV. We also show that the muon anomalous magnetic moment can be within 1sigma of the experimental value for these models, even when the Higgs boson is relatively heavy. We also discuss the LHC constraints and the prospects of discovery.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. Corrections and references are adde

Community Insurgency: Constituency, School Choice, and the Common Good

    Get PDF
This study explores the ways in which the democratic notion of the people may be enacted in the school choice arena. Through an investigation of a charter school movement in a rural and segregated district in the Deep South, we explore themes of the constituent paradox that enabled the community to move beyond individual interests towards an expression of the common good. It is argued that for the people to be invoked via the democratic claim, they must identify more deeply than the institutions of their representation and recognize an expanded form of individualism defined through participation over consumption
