Trichomonas tenax u usnoj Ŕupljini
Fifty-one patients were investigated in order to determine the presence of Trichomonas tenax in various oral structures (saliva, dental plaque from physiologically clean and unclean tooth areas, carious dentin, root canal contents). Samples were cultivated in liquid Diamondās axenic broth medium. The results were considered positive if living oral Trichomonas was found in smears. The prevalence of Trichomonas tenax in the study patients was 35.5%. Trichomonas tenax was most frequently found in dental plaque (23.2%) and in the root canal content (30.0%) (p > 0.05). The variables observed in this study (patientās age and sex, oral hygiene, gingivitis, number of carious teeth, smoking and coffee intake) did not influence the presence of Trichomonas tenax. According to the results obtained, a mature dental plaque appears to be the oral structure favoring the growth and survival of oral Trichomonas in the physiologic conditions. It is possible that Trichomonas tenax spreads from dental plaque into the diseased endodontium.Prisutnost Trichomonas tenaxa na razliÄitim strukturama usne Å”upljine (slina, dentobakterijski plak s fizioloÅ”ki Äistoga i neÄistoga mjesta na zubu, karijesni dentin, sadržaj korijenskih kanala) istražena je u 51 ispitanika. Uzorci su kultivirani na Diamondovoj akseniÄnoj hranjivoj tekuÄoj podlozi. Nalaz živoga parazita u uzorku smatran je pozitivnim nalazom. Prevalencija Trichomonas tenaxa u ispitanika iznosila je 35,3%, a naÄen je u zubnom plaku (23,2%) i u korijenskim kanalima (30,0%) (p > 0,05). U naÅ”em istraživanju ispitivane varijable (dob i spol ispitanika, stupanj oralne higijene, upala gingive, broj karijesnih zubi, puÅ”enje i konzumiranje kave) nisu utjecale na pojavnost Trichomonas tenaxa. Prema rezultatima ovoga rada, zreli zubni plak omoguÄuje rast i razvoj oralnoga Trichomonasa u fizioloÅ”kim uvjetima u usnoj Å”upljini, a Trichomonas može prijeÄi iz zubnoga plaka u bolesni endodont
Subcutaneous dirofilariosis ā a case report
Humana dirofilarioza je u Hrvatskoj rijetka. Prikazali smo dva sluÄaja, koja su se manifestirala bezbolnim supkutanim ÄvoriÄima u trajanju od nekoliko mjeseci. Prvi bolesnik je 44-godiÅ”nja kuÄanica iz ruralne sredine. Drugi je bolesnik 66-godiÅ”nji muÅ”karac iz Zagreba, koji nema životinja i nije izbivao izvan Hrvatske. U oba sluÄaja su potkožni ÄvoriÄi kirurÅ”ki ekscidirani i histoloÅ”ki obraÄeni nakon Äega su bolesnici bili izlijeÄeni. IstiÄemo znaÄaj dirofilarioze u diferencijalnoj dijagnozi potkožnih ÄvoriÄa.Human dirofilariosis is very rare in Croatia. We present two cases that manifested in painless subcutaneous nodules lasting for several months. The first patient was a 44-year-old housewife from rural environment. The second patient was a 66-year-old male from Zagreb that kept no domestic animals, and did not reside outside Croatia. In both cases subcutaneous nodules were surgically removed and histological analysis was performed, after which both patients were cured. The authors stress the importance of dirofilariosis in differential diagnostics of subcutaneous nodules
Abdominal ultrasound diagnostics of infectious diseases
Abdominalni ultrazvuk rabi transmisiju i refleksiju ultrazvuÄnih valova za prikaz unutarnjih organa kroz trbuÅ”nu stijenku. Opisali smo kliniÄki znaÄaj i sonografske karakteristike razliÄitih oblika žariÅ”nih i difuznih jetrenih lezija te upalnih stanja žuÄnog sustava, guÅ”teraÄe i slezene kao i diferencijalno dijagnostiÄke moguÄnosti. IzuzevÅ”i jednostavne ciste i tipiÄne hemangiome, definitivna karakterizacija jetrenih lezija nije uvijek moguÄa konvencionalnim ultrazvukom. Ovaj pregledni rad takoÄer opisuje karakteristike transabdominalnog ultrazvuka tankog i debelog crijeva kod razliÄitih infektivnih bolesti i upalnih stanja.Abdominal ultrasonography uses the transmission and reflection of ultrasound waves to visualise internal organs through the abdominal wall. We describe the clinical significance and sonographic features of various types of liver focal and diffuse infections, biliary, pancreatic and splenic inflammatory conditions and differential diagnosis. With the exception of cysts and typical haemangiomas, a definitive characterisation of liver lesions is often not possible using conventional ultrasound. This review also provides an overview of transabdominal ultrasonography of the small and large bowel, while summarizing its use in a variety of gastrointestinal infectious and inflammatory diseases
Proteolytic Activity of Trichomonas tenax from Dentobacterial Plaque and Root Canal Contens
Ispitivala se je proteolitiÄka aktivnost oralnoga protozoona Trichomonas tenax kultiviranog izravno iz zubnoga plaka i sadržaja korijenskih kanala zuba s upalno promijenjenom ili gangrenoznom pulpom, ili periapeksnim procesom. Nakon pripreme lizata, utvrÄivala se je proteolitiÄka aktivnost oralnoga trihomonasa elektroforezom na poliakrilamidnom gelu i elektroforezom na poliakrilamidnom gelu s dodatkom želatine. Najbrža i najizrazitija aktivnost obiju vrsta izolata oralnoga trihomonasa opažena je pri inkubiranju gela u pH 4,6; zatim u pH 5,6. Aktivnost je bila joÅ” oÄita kod pH 2,8, a kod pH 7,2 izrazito slaba. ProteolitiÄka aktivnost bila je najizraženija u podruÄju proteina molekulske težine 36 kDa. Rezultati ovisni o pH inkubirajuÄih medija pokazuju pstojanje razliÄitih endopeptidaza u lizatima stanica protozoona Trichomonas tenax iz zubnoga plaka i korijenskih kanala.The purpose of this study was to examine proteolytic activity of Trichomonas tenax collected directly from dentobacterial plaque and root canal contents o f gangrenous teeth or teeth with periapical processes. Both electrophoretic method involving polyacrylamide gels and electrophoretic method involving gelatin - containing polyacrylamide gels, have been used to analyse Trichomonas tenax proteolytic activity. The most obvious and fastest activities were obtained when gels were incubated in pH 4.6, followed by the results of incubating in pH 5.6, while in pH 2.8 activity was less but still obvious. Proteolytic activities were the most effective in the area of protein MW 36 kDa. The different activity of enzymes depending on the pH o f incubated media indicate the presence of different endopeptidases in cell lysates of protozoon Trichomonas tenax from dentobacterial plaque and root canal contents
