    Effect of different mowing regimes on butterflies and diurnal moths on road verges

    In northern and central Europe road verges offer alternative habitats for declining plant and invertebrate species of semi-natural grasslands. The quality of road verges as habitats depends on several factors, of which the mowing regime is one of the easiest to modify. In this study we compared the Lepidoptera communities on road verges that underwent three different mowing regimes regarding the timing and intensity of mowing; mowing in mid-summer, mowing in late summer, and partial mowing (a narrow strip next to the road). A total of 12,174 individuals and 107 species of Lepidoptera were recorded. The mid-summer mown verges had lower species richness and abundance of butterflies and lower species richness and diversity of diurnal moths compared to the late summer and partially mown verges. By delaying the annual mowing until late summer or promoting mosaic-like mowing regimes, such as partial mowing, the quality of road verges as habitats for butterflies and diurnal moths can be improved

La calidad de los márgenes de las carreteras como hábitats depende de diversos factores, de los cuales el régimen de siega es de los más fáciles de modificar. En este estudio se compararon las comunidades de lepidópteros de los márgenes de las carreteras que sufrieron tres regímenes distintos de siega, según el momento y la intensidad de la siega; siega a mediados del verano, siega a finales de éste, y siega parcial (una estrecha franja próxima a la carretera). Se estudiaron un total de 12.174 individuos y 107 especies de lepidópteros. Los márgenes segados a mediados de verano presentaban una menor riqueza de especies y abundancia de mariposas, y una menor riqueza de especies y diversidad de polillas diurnas, en comparación con los márgenes segados a finales de verano o segados parcialmente. Retrasando la siega anual hasta finales del verano, o promoviendo regímenes de siega en forma de mosaico, tales como la siega parcial, podría mejorarse la calidad de los márgenes de las carreteras como hábitats para las mariposas y las polillas diurnas

    Efficacy of Targeted 5-day Combined Parenteral and Intramammary Treatment of Clinical Mastitis Caused by Penicillin-Susceptible or Penicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

    Combined parenteral and intramammary treatment of mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus was compared to parenteral treatment only. Cows with clinical mastitis (166 mastitic quarters) caused by S. aureus treated by veterinarians of the Ambulatory Clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine during routine farm calls were included. Treatment was based on in vitro susceptibility testing of the bacterial isolate. Procaine penicillin G (86 cases due to β-lactamase negative strains) or amoxycillin-clavulanic acid (24 cases due to β-lactamase positive strains) was administered parenterally and intramammarily for 5 days. Efficacy of treatments was assessed 2 and 4 weeks later by physical examination, bacteriological culture, determination of CMT, somatic cell count and NAGase activity in milk. Quarters with growth of S. aureus in at least one post-treatment sample were classified as non-cured. As controls we used 41 clinical mastitis cases caused by penicillin-susceptible S. aureus isolates treated with procaine penicillin G parenterally for 5 days and 15 cases due to penicillin-resistant isolates treated with spiramycin parenterally for 5 days from the same practice area. Bacteriological cure rate after the combination treatment was 75.6% for quarters infected with penicillin-susceptible S. aureus isolates, and 29.2% for quarters infected with penicillin-resistant isolates. Cure rate for quarters treated only parenterally with procaine penicillin G was 56.1% and that for quarters treated with spiramycin 33.3%. The difference in cure rates between mastitis due to penicillin-susceptible and penicillin-resistant S. aureus was highly significant. Combined treatment was superior over systemic treatment only in the β-lactamase negative group

    Nesting by Canada Geese on Baffin Island, Nunavut

    Outside of northern Quebec, there is little evidence to confirm reports of nesting by Canada Geese in Arctic habitats of North America, but they nest regularly in the Arctic tundra of West Greenland, from about 62˚ N to as far north as 76.96˚ N, 71.11˚ W. In 2013, we documented successful nesting by a pair of Canada Geese on northern Baffin Island (71.36˚ N, 79.59˚ W), approximately 1200 km north of the nearest known site of regular nesting by this species in northern Quebec. Photographs, egg measurements, and mitochondrial DNA evidence confirmed that these were Canada Geese. Egg laying began around 17 June, the nest of five eggs hatched on 18 July, and we determined that fledging should have occurred around 20 September. Daily mean temperatures on northern Baffin Island fell below freezing after 5 September 2013, and we suspect that the probability of recruitment for this brood was very low. Climate warming in the Arctic is likely to favor northward range expansion by Canada Geese.En dehors du nord du Québec, il existe peu de preuves permettant de confirmer des rapports selon lesquels la bernache du Canada nidifierait dans les habitats arctiques de l’Amérique du Nord. Cela dit, la bernache du Canada nidifie régulièrement dans la toundra arctique de l’ouest du Groenland, à partir d’environ 62˚ N et aussi loin qu’à 76,96˚ N, 71,11˚ O. En 2013, nous avons documenté la nidification réussie d’une paire de bernaches du Canada dans le nord de l’île de Baffin (71,36˚ N, 79,59˚ O), à environ 1 200 km au nord du site le plus près de nidification habituel connu de cette espèce dans le nord du Québec. Des photographies, la mesure des oeufs et des échantillons d’ADN mitochondrial ont permis de confirmer qu’il s’agissait effectivement de bernaches du Canada. La ponte a commencé vers le 17 juin, puis la couvée de cinq oeufs a éclos le 18 juillet. Nous avons ensuite déterminé que la prise des ailes aurait eu lieu vers le 20 septembre. Dans le nord de l’île de Baffin, les températures moyennes quotidiennes sont tombées sous le point de congélation après le 5 septembre 2013, si bien que nous estimons que pour cette nichée, la probabilité de recrutement était très faible. Le réchauffement climatique dans l’Arctique favorisera vraisemblablement l’expansion du parcours naturel de la bernache du Canada vers le nord.

    On the mechanism of the shape elongation of embedded nanoparticles

    The mechanism of the shape elongation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in silica, which is induced under swift heavy ion irradiation, is discussed with comparing the two candidates: (i) the synergy between the ion hammering and the transient melting of NPs by the inelastic thermal spike and (ii) the thermal pressure and flow model. We show that three experimental results are inconsistent with (i). The latter is supported by two-temperature molecular dynamics simulations, which simulate not only the atomic motions but also the local electron temperatures. A remarkable correlation was observed between the temporal evolution of the silica density around the ion trajectory and that of the aspect ratio of the NP later than similar to 1 ps after the ion impact, while no correlation was observed earlier than similar to 1 ps, even under the assumption of the instantaneous energy deposition.Peer reviewe

    Monitoring microplastics in the atmosphere and cryosphere in the circumpolar North: A case for multi-compartment monitoring

    The atmosphere and cryosphere have recently garnered considerable attention due to their role in transporting microplastics to and within the Arctic, and between freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments. While investigating either in isolation provides valuable insight on the fate of microplastics in the Arctic, monitoring both provides a more holistic view. Nonetheless, despite the recent scientific interest, fundamental knowledge on microplastic abundance, and consistent monitoring efforts, are lacking for these compartments. Here, we build upon the work of the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme’s Monitoring Guidelines for Litter and Microplastic to provide a roadmap for multi-compartment monitoring of the atmosphere and cryosphere to support our understanding of the sources, pathways, and sinks of plastic pollution across the Arctic. Overall, we recommend the use of existing standard techniques for ice and atmospheric sampling and to build upon existing monitoring efforts in the Arctic to obtain a more comprehensive pan-Arctic view of microplastic pollution in these two compartments
