The STEAMR Instrument: Optical Design, Development & Testing
The STEAMR instrument is a Swedish national
contribution to the ESA PREMIER mission, which is a candidate
for the upcoming Earth Core Explorer mission. The STEAMR
instrument is envisaged as a multi-beam limb sounding satellite,
which will utilise 14 simultaneously observing beams in two 12
GHz wide bands from 323 to 357 GHz. To maximize spatial
sampling in the elevation direction the observing beams have
an elliptical geometry, which defines the incoming beams as
being astigmatic. In this paper we present an antenna optics
scheme which corrects for this inherent astigmatism, thereby
ensuring optimum imaging of the incoming to the circularly
symmetric receiver feed horns. Furthermore, the design, synthesis
and electromagnetic verification of a prototype focal plane array
for the STEAMR instrument is also reported
Binding of Human Milk to Pathogen Receptor DC-SIGN Varies with Bile Salt-Stimulated Lipase (BSSL) Gene Polymorphism
OBJECTIVE: Dendritic cells bind an array of antigens and DC-SIGN has been postulated to act as a receptor for mucosal pathogen transmission. Bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL) from human milk potently binds DC-SIGN and blocks DC-SIGN mediated trans-infection of CD4(+) T-lymphocytes with HIV-1. Objective was to study variation in DC-SIGN binding properties and the relation between DC-SIGN binding capacity of milk and BSSL gene polymorphisms. STUDY DESIGN: ELISA and PCR were used to study DC-SIGN binding properties and BSSL exon 11 size variation for human milk derived from 269 different mothers distributed over 4 geographical regions. RESULTS: DC-SIGN binding properties were highly variable for milks derived from different mothers and between samplings from different geographical regions. Differences in DC-SIGN binding were correlated with a genetic polymorphism in BSSL which is related to the number of 11 amino acid repeats at the C-terminus of the protein. CONCLUSION: The observed variation in DC-SIGN binding properties among milk samples may have implications for the risk of mucosal transmission of pathogens during breastfeeding
Some unusual sounds in Changana
A selection of typologically unusual or possibly unique sounds in Changana are briefly described, including the unaspirated and aspirated versions of /tl/ and /p#/ as well as voiced and aspirated prenasalised affricates such as /nd##/. It is also shown that prenasalisation occurs with implosives as well as with voiced, voiceless unaspirated, and voiceless aspirated stops
A Compensating Anastigmatic Submillimeter Array Imaging System for STEAMR
In this paper, we present a novel technique for the removal of astigmatism in submillimeter-wave optical systems through employment of a specific combination of so-called astigmatic off-axis reflectors. This technique treats an orthogonally astigmatic beam using skew Gaussian beam analysis, from which an anastigmatic imaging network is derived. The resultant beam is considered truly stigmatic, with all Gaussian beam parameters in the orthogonal directions being matched. This is thus considered an improvement over previous techniques wherein a beam corrected for astigmatism has only the orthogonal beam amplitude radii matched, with phase shift and phase radius of curvature not considered. This technique is computationally efficient, negating the requirement for computationally intensive numerical analysis of shaped reflector surfaces. The required optical surfaces are also relatively simple to implement compared to such numerically optimized shaped surfaces. This technique is implemented in this work as part of the complete optics train for the STEAMR antenna. The STEAMR instrument is envisaged as a mutli-beam limb sounding instrument operating at submillimeter wavelengths. The antenna optics arrangement for this instrument uses multiple off-axis reflectors to control the incident radiation and couple them to their corresponding receiver feeds. An anastigmatic imaging network is successfully implemented into an optical model of this antenna, and the resultant design ensures optimal imaging of the beams to the corresponding feed horns. This example also addresses the challenges of imaging in multi-beam antenna systems
