    Family relations, children and interregional mobility, 1970 to 2000

    During the last three decades, there has been a rapid increase in female labor force participation rates. This increase has gradually changed the family concept. Today, women and men both work and contribute to family earnings so that dual-earner households has become the rule rather the single-earner households. A popular view is that the growth in female labor supply has reduced the incentives to migrate for families were both spouses work. With both spouses working migration decisions becomes a rather complicated process. In particular if both spouses are to find new jobs, regions has to be diversified enough to offer career opportunities for both spouses. Children are generally supposed to trigger local migration, but to decrease long distance migration. The objective of this paper is to examine how family formation, the arrival of children and family dissolution has influenced migration rates during the period 1970-2000. Determinants of migration are analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regressions. The empirical analysis is based on the longitudinal database LINDA expanded with information on births for children and when geographical moves took place in time. According to the results family formation, the presence of children and family dissolutions has all been important for the interregional migration patterns in Sweden during the last three decades. The presence of family ties thereby seems to be of vital importance for the decision to migrate. The findings indicate that family formation and presence of children lowers the propensity for migration while family dissolution seems to trigger migration. Furthermore, the estimations indicate that migration propensities have decreased over the three last decades. This finding might be related to the rapid increase in female labor force participation rates during the observed period.Family relations; migration rates 1970-2000

    The importance of age for the reallocation of labor. Evidence from Swedish linked employer-employee data 1986-2002

    Using employer-employee data covering the whole Swedish economy over a uniquely long time period from 1986 to 2002, we examine how job and worker flows have been distributed across age groups. We find that job and worker flows vary by age groups, not only with respect to magnitude and variation, but with respect to direction as well. The differences between the age groups are mainly driven by the job creation rates. Further, estimating a multinomial logistic model, we investigate the importance of age for leaving, changing or entering a new employment.     Consequences of Fathers Parental Leave Use: Evidence from Sweden

    Fathers parental leave use is often assumed to affect gender equality both at home and in the labour market. In the home, fathers parental leave is expected to improve father-child contact later on in the childs life. In this study the associations between fathers parental leave use and further adaption to family life and contact with children are investigated. The first research question is whether fathers who have used parental leave are more likely to have shorter working hours during their childrens first years compared to fathers who have not used the leave. The second question is whether the contact between separated fathers and their children is associated with the fathers previous parental leave use. We use a survey carried out in 2003 with a sample of approximately 4000 parents of children born in 1993 and 1999. The findings indicate that fathers parental leave is associated with both shorter working hours later in the childs life and more contact between separated fathers and their children

    Stress response regulators identified through genome-wide transcriptome analysis of the (p)ppGpp-dependent response in Rhizobium etli

    Background: The alarmone (p) ppGpp mediates a global reprogramming of gene expression upon nutrient limitation and other stresses to cope with these unfavorable conditions. Synthesis of (p) ppGpp is, in most bacteria, controlled by RelA/SpoT (Rsh) proteins. The role of (p) ppGpp has been characterized primarily in Escherichia coli and several Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we report the first in-depth analysis of the (p) ppGpp-regulon in an alpha-proteobacterium using a high-resolution tiling array to better understand the pleiotropic stress phenotype of a relA/rsh mutant. Results: We compared gene expression of the Rhizobium etli wild type and rsh (previously rel) mutant during exponential and stationary phase, identifying numerous (p) ppGpp targets, including small non-coding RNAs. The majority of the 834 (p) ppGpp-dependent genes were detected during stationary phase. Unexpectedly, 223 genes were expressed (p) ppGpp-dependently during early exponential phase, indicating the hitherto unrecognized importance of (p) ppGpp during active growth. Furthermore, we identified two (p) ppGpp-dependent key regulators for survival during heat and oxidative stress and one regulator putatively involved in metabolic adaptation, namely extracytoplasmic function sigma factor EcfG2/PF00052, transcription factor CH00371, and serine protein kinase PrkA. Conclusions: The regulatory role of (p) ppGpp in R. etli stress adaptation is far-reaching in redirecting gene expression during all growth phases. Genome-wide transcriptome analysis of a strain deficient in a global regulator, and exhibiting a pleiotropic phenotype, enables the identification of more specific regulators that control genes associated with a subset of stress phenotypes. This work is an important step toward a full understanding of the regulatory network underlying stress responses in alpha-proteobacteria

    Identification and Characterization of Novel CFTR Potentiators

    There is still a high unmet need for the treatment of most patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The identification and development of new Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator (CFTR) modulators is necessary to achieve higher clinical benefit in patients. In this report we describe the characterization of novel potentiators. From a small screening campaign on F508del CFTR, hits were developed leading to the identification of pre-clinical candidates GLPG1837 and GLPG2451, each derived from a distinct chemical series. Both drug candidates enhance WT CFTR activity as well as low temperature or corrector rescued F508del CFTR, and are able to improve channel activity on a series of Class III, IV CFTR mutants. The observed activities in YFP halide assays translated well to primary cells derived from CF lungs when measured using Trans-epithelial clamp circuit (TECC). Both potentiators improve F508del CFTR channel opening in a similar manner, increasing the open time and reducing the closed time of the channel. When evaluating the potentiators in a chronic setting on corrected F508del CFTR, no reduction of channel activity in presence of potentiator was observed. The current work identifies and characterizes novel CFTR potentiators GLPG1837 and GLPG2451, which may offer new therapeutic options for CF patients
