Dynamical Locking of the Chiral and the Deconfinement Phase Transition in QCD
We study the fixed-point structure of four-fermion interactions in two-flavor
QCD with Nc colors close to the finite-temperature phase boundary. In
particular, we analyze how the fixed-point structure of four-fermion
interactions is related to the confining dynamics in the gauge sector. We show
that there exists indeed a mechanism which dynamically locks the chiral phase
transition to the deconfinement phase transition. This mechanism allows us to
determine a window for the values of physical observables in which the two
phase transitions lie close to each other.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Thermodynamically Stable One-Component Metallic Quasicrystals
Classical density-functional theory is employed to study finite-temperature
trends in the relative stabilities of one-component quasicrystals interacting
via effective metallic pair potentials derived from pseudopotential theory.
Comparing the free energies of several periodic crystals and rational
approximant models of quasicrystals over a range of pseudopotential parameters,
thermodynamically stable quasicrystals are predicted for parameters approaching
the limits of mechanical stability of the crystalline structures. The results
support and significantly extend conclusions of previous ground-state
lattice-sum studies.Comment: REVTeX, 13 pages + 2 figures, to appear, Europhys. Let
TLEP, first step in a long-term vision for HEP
The discovery of H(126) has renewed interest in circular e+e- colliders that
can operate as Higgs factories, which benefit from three unique
characteristics: i) high luminosity and reliability, ii) the availability of
several interaction points, iii) superior beam energy accuracy. TLEP is an e+e-
storage ring of 80-km circumference that can operate with very high luminosity
from the Z peak (90 GeV) to the top quark pair threshold (350 GeV). It can
achieve transverse beam polarization at the Z peak and WW threshold, giving it
unparalleled accuracy on the beam energy. A preliminary study indicates that an
80 km tunnel could be constructed around CERN. Such a tunnel would allow a 100
TeV proton-proton collider to be established in the same ring (VHE-LHC),
offering a long term vision.Comment: This is a contribution to the the Snowmass process 2013: Frontier

TLEP: A High-Performance Circular e+e- Collider to Study the Higgs Boson
The recent discovery of a light Higgs boson has opened up considerable
interest in circular e+e- Higgs factories around the world. We report on the
progress of the TLEP concept since last year. TLEP is an e+e- circular collider
capable of very high luminosities in a wide centre-of-mass (ECM) spectrum from
90 to 350 GeV. TLEP could be housed in a new 80 to 100 km tunnel in the Geneva
region. The design can be adapted to different ring circumference (e.g. LEP3 in
the 27 km LHC tunnel). TLEP is an ideal complementary machine to the LHC thanks
to high luminosity, exquisite determination of ECM and the possibility of four
interaction points, both for precision measurements of the Higgs boson
properties and for precision tests of the closure of the Standard Model from
the Z pole to the top threshold.Comment: Contribution to IPAC13, 12-17 May 2013, Shanghai, Chin
Comments on "Wall-plug (AC) power consumption of a very high energy e+/e- storage ring collider" by Marc Ross
The paper arXiv:1308.0735 questions some of the technical assumptions made by
the TLEP Steering Group when estimating in arXiv:1305.6498 the power
requirement for the very high energy e+e- storage ring collider TLEP. We show
that our assumptions are based solidly on CERN experience with LEP and the LHC,
as well accelerators elsewhere, and confirm our earlier baseline estimate of
the TLEP power consumption.Comment: 6 page
Discovery of a Transition to Global Spin-up in EXO 2030+375
EXO 2030+375, a 42-second transient X-ray pulsar with a Be star companion,
has been observed to undergo an outburst at nearly every periastron passage for
the last 13.5 years. From 1994 through 2002, the global trend in the pulsar
spin frequency was spin-down. Using RXTE data from 2003 September, we have
observed a transition to global spin-up in EXO 2030+375. Although the spin
frequency observations are sparse, the relative spin-up between 2002 June and
2003 September observations, along with an overall brightening of the outbursts
since mid 2002 observed with the RXTE ASM, accompanied by an increase in
density of the Be disk, indicated by infrared magnitudes, suggest that the
pattern observed with BATSE of a roughly constant spin frequency, followed by
spin-up, followed by spin-down is repeating. If so this pattern has
approximately an 11 year period, similar to the 15 +/- 3 year period derived by
Wilson et al. (2002) for the precession period of a one-armed oscillation in
the Be disk. If this pattern is indeed repeating, we predict a transition from
spin-up to spin-down in 2005.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 4 pages, 5 figures, using

Icosahedral multi-component model sets
A quasiperiodic packing Q of interpenetrating copies of C, most of them only
partially occupied, can be defined in terms of the strip projection method for
any icosahedral cluster C. We show that in the case when the coordinates of the
vectors of C belong to the quadratic field Q[\sqrt{5}] the dimension of the
superspace can be reduced, namely, Q can be re-defined as a multi-component
model set by using a 6-dimensional superspace.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX2e in IOP styl
Sound modes broadening for Fibonacci one dimensional quasicrystals
We investigate vibrational excitation broadening in one dimensional Fibonacci
model of quasicrystals (QCs). The chain is constructed from particles with two
masses following the Fibonacci inflation rule. The eigenmode spectrum depends
crucially on the mass ratio. We calculate the eigenstates and eigenfunctions.
All calculations performed self-consistently within the regular expansion over
the three wave coupling constant. The approach can be extended to three
dimensional systems. We find that in the intermediate range of mode coupling
constants, three-wave broadening for the both types of systems (1D Fibonacci
and 3D QCs) depends universally on frequency. Our general qualitative
conclusion is that for a system with a non-simple elementary cell phonon
spectrum broadening is always larger than for a system with a primitive cell
(provided all other characteristics are the same).Comment: 2o pages, 15 figure
