Kripkenstein from the mathematical point of view: a preliminary survey
This paper deals with the problem of the impact of Kripke’s skeptical
paradox on the philosophy of mathematics. By perceiving mathematics as
a huge rule-following discipline, one could argue that the Kripkean nonfactualist
thesis should be adopted within the philosophy of mathematics
en bloc to imply a refutation of objectivity and an enforcement of a
particular view on the nature of mathematics. In this paper I will discuss
this claim. According to Kripke’s skeptical solution we should reject the
notion of fact and adopt the use theory of meaning that could be stated as
follows: ’One understands the concepts embodied in a language to the
extent that one knows how to use the language correctly.’ [Shapiro
1991, 211] [Kripke 1982]. Focusing on mathematical discourse, we
should ask: what are the implications of the use theory of meaning for
the philosophy of mathematics? Furthermore, is the answer to the
skeptical paradox consistent with selected views in philosophy of
mathematics? The supposed answer to the first question is that it
demands the view that mathematics should be perceived as a strictly
pragmatic discipline and the rules of mathematical discourse are mere
conventions. But this is too simplistic a view and the matter at hand is far
more complicated. This paper is a part of a research project financed by National Centre of Science (Poland)

The Lund Model at Nonzero Impact Parameter
We extend the formulation of the longitudinal 1+1 dimensional Lund model to
nonzero impact parameter using the minimal area assumption. Complete formulae
for the string breaking probability and the momenta of the produced mesons are
derived using the string worldsheet Minkowskian helicoid geometry. For strings
stretched into the transverse dimension, we find probability distribution with
slope linear in m_T similar to the statistical models but without any
thermalization assumptions.Comment: 12 pages, 2 .eps figures, footnotes added, results unchanged, version

AdS/CFT for the early stages of heavy ion collisions
I give a brief introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence targeted at
heavy-ion physicists. I also review some insights to our understanding of the
early stages of heavy-ion collisions coming from selected studies made using
methods of the AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Plenary talk at the Quark Matter 2014 conferenc
Unit non-response in establishments surveyed for the first time in the IAB Establishment Panel
"The aim of this paper is to analyse unit non-response in establishments surveyed for the first time in the IAB Establishment Panel. For this a theoretical framework is presented which helps to explain the decision to participate in establishment surveys. The empirical results largely confirm this framework. If the respondent has the authority to provide the relevant information and is able to give reliable answers to the questions with a justifiable amount of effort, participation is less frequently refused. However, these two aspects are less likely to be the case as the size of the establishment and the complexity of the firm increase, so participation accordingly becomes more improbable. It can also be shown that experienced and professional interviewers are more successful in recruiting firms to take part in the survey. However this result only holds for smaller establishments." Polyamide-rubber blends: micrscopic studies of the deformation zone
The morphology of injection moulded samples of polyamide—polybutadiene blends (85.15) with an average particle size of 0.3 μm was studied. The samples were fractured in a notched tensile test at crosshead speeds of 10−4 and 1 ms −1 and the structure of the deformation zone was studied using various techniques: polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy on stained cut samples and carbon replicas, and selected area electron diffraction transmission electron microscopy. The deformation zone of samples tested at 10−4 ms−1 was found to consist of two layers. Far from the fracture surface a layer was observed with more or less round cavities and with cavities in the rubber particles, while near the fracture surface a layer with strongly deformed cavities (length/diameter ratio of 5–10) could be seen. In the samples tested at 1 ms−1 the deformation zone was found to have three layers. In addition to the two previous layers an extra layer next to the fracture plane was found. This layer was 2–3 μm thick with round rubber particles and no orientation of the matrix material. This indicates that, at the high deformation speed of the test, relaxation in the melt took place, suggesting that the material around the crack tip was molten during fracture.\u
THE ROLE OF SMALL ENTERPRISES IN POLAND’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The economic transformations taking place in Poland in recent years have been accompanied by changes in companies’ structure. The role of small companies, employing up to 50 persons, has been constantly growing. These companies, particularly in the first half of the 1990s, helped to reduce unemployment. Many employees who had previously been working in state-owned companies set up their own businesses, thus creating new jobs. The dynamic development of these companies at that time was extensive and was to a large extent stimulated by the privatization processes state-owned companies were undergoing and the greater economic freedom. Since the mid-1990s the rate of development of this group of enterprises has been much slower due to the bureaucratization of setting up new companies and lower availability of bank loans. The growing competition from foreign companies also played a role, and all these factors had a negative influence on the competitiveness of small enterprises. Besides the findings for Poland as a whole, some research results about the state of small companies in Lublin region are also included.small enterprises, barriers, financing sources, EU stimuli
