The Commencement of our Violent Brothers

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. It is taught in Sunday school, catechism, and Catholic and Christian schools across the country and the world that violence is not an option – the golden rule is always to be used. We are to be peaceful beings in regards to physical and emotional health in order to attain full happiness. But what we are not told are things about subjects that are not often breached, like alcohol, sex and drug abuse. We look at these subjects and wonder how our children, friends and siblings could ever fall prey to such destructive habits. We never believe that someone close to us could become someone overcome by addiction, anger and power or something as simple as inadequacy. But what happens when it does happen? Are we a cause – a catalyst? Do we sit back and watch what happens? Do we even notice

    Resolving Conflict through Peaceful Discourse

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. Today we live in a world where we are affected by tragedy and loss, death and heartbreak. Our lives are not only overtaken by the grief and sorrow because of destruction in our neighborhoods, but we are flooded with information from the media and government about new acts of violence happening all around the world. This violence is not because of wrong-doing, but because of prejudice, religion, and political power. We are not struck by the inconsistencies in the world and do not seek change. We as humans, only seek power for ourselves, whether it is wealth, fame, or government. We are not concerned with the fate of others if it means advancing ourselves. What does this say about the fate of our race? What does this say about the source and future of our morality? Are we meant to remain power hungry and violent or can we seek a better and more peaceful future for our children

Gender Schemas, Parenting Styles, and Aggression

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph: Many different facets shape gender roles during the development of a child into adolescence. From parenting styles to media influences, children learn by observation and are swayed by the plethora or lack of adults in their lives. This control is not only important for the healthy development of their social and emotional well-being, but also for the development of their cognitions and memory in difficult situations (Liben & Signorella, 1993). Though all humans have the ability to make their own decisions, they are haunted and pressured by the influence of others around them, others who are hierarchically above them, or others who are important

Religion: Does It Have a Place in Politics?

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. Despite tragedy, natural disasters, and loss, there is still an undying component of faith left in the arms of the souls that walk the earth. Though many hold the belief that no God or religion exists because an immense amount of horrible things happen in the world, these people still have faith in something – enough to have faith in nothing. For those who do hold strong beliefs through times of tragedy, their beliefs are firm that they will be grounded no matter the pain or loss that surrounds them. Because we were given free will, the choices we make are influenced by how we view faith and the world. Our lens of faith, and how actively we see through it, controls how we react to the variety of situations in which we find ourselves

    DSP/FPGA Design for a High-Speed Programmable S-Band Space Transceiver

    Get PDF
Traditional command uplink receivers are very limited in performance capability, take a long time to acquire, cannot operate on both uplink bands (NASA & AFSCN), and only support low-rate communications. As a result, transceivers end up on many programs critical paths, even though they should be a standard purchased spacecraft subsystem. Also, many missions are impacted by the low effective uplink throughput. In order to tackle these challenges, a transceiver was developed that will provide on-site frequency agility, support of high uplink rates, and operation on both NASA and AFSCN frequency bands. The device is a low-power, high-reliability, and high-performance digital signal processing (DSP) demodulator for an on-orbit programmable command receiver

    Secure Space Mesh Networking

Innoflight’s Secure Space Mesh Networking development and prototyping efforts started at its incorporation over 15 years ago with a vision of establishing end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity in and through space. A number of space industry trends have accelerated the demand for space networking: (a) the widespread adoption of enterprise-grade and cloud-based, IP-centric ground system architectures; (b) the accelerated growth of both commercial and government proliferated Low Earth Orbit (pLEO) constellations leveraging small satellites (SmallSats); (c) the maturation, miniaturization and commoditization of high-speed Radio Frequency (RF), Free Space Optical (FSO) Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs), and high-performance flight processors for aforementioned SmallSats; and (d) the need for All-Domain Operations (ADO) seamlessly and autonomously integrating space, airborne, terrestrial, maritime and underwater networks. Furthermore, data encryption, for reasons of either National Security or monetized mission data protection, creates additional challenges to effectively switch/route and encrypt/decrypt ciphertext data across a mesh network. Lastly, with the projection of multiple and multi-national pLEO constellations, it is critical to negotiate link security real-time for dynamic, trusted nodes, and prevent inadvertent or intentional networking with unknown/untrusted nodes. Innoflight will discuss the aforementioned relevant space industry trends and commercial and government initiatives, including DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Blackjack and Space Development Agency’s (SDA) National Defense Space Architecture (NDSA), and then identify the technical challenges for secure space mesh networking and decompose these challenges with two popular frameworks: (a) the individual layers, especially Layer 2 (data/link layer) and Layer 3 (network layer), within the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model; and (b) the control and data planes within the Software Defined Networking (SDN) model. Innoflight will present its development and prototyping efforts, specific to these challenges, including recent work funded under a 2019 Space Pitch Day award and leveraging its general-purpose processing and networking CFC-400X platform, and conclude by identifying remaining gaps: including technical, commercial and policy; to fully realize interoperable secure space mesh networking.

The learners' perspective on internal medicine ward rounds: a cross-sectional study

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

Ward rounds form an integral part of Internal Medicine teaching. This study aimed to determine the trainees' opinions regarding various aspects of their ward rounds, including how well they cover their learning needs, how they would like the rounds to be conducted, and differences of opinion between medical students and postgraduates.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 134 trainees in Internal Medicine, comprising medical students, interns, residents and fellows, who were asked to fill in a structured, self-designed questionnaire. Most of the responses required a rating on a scale of 1-5 (1 being highly unsatisfactory and 5 being highly satisfactory).

Results

Teaching of clinical skills and bedside teaching received the lowest overall mean score (Mean ± SD 2.48 ± 1.02 and 2.49 ± 1.12 respectively). They were rated much lower by postgraduates as compared to students (p < 0.001). All respondents felt that management of patients was the aspect best covered by the current ward rounds (Mean ± SD 3.71 ± 0.72). For their desired ward rounds, management of patients received the highest score (Mean ± SD 4.64 ± 0.55), followed by bedside examinations (Mean ± SD 4.60 ± 0.61) and clinical skills teaching (Mean ± SD 4.50 ± 0.68). The postgraduates desired a lot more focus on communication skills, counselling and medical ethics as compared to students, whose primary focus was teaching of bedside examination and management. A majority of the respondents (87%) preferred bedside rounds over conference room rounds. Even though the duration of rounds was found to be adequate, a majority of the trainees (68%) felt there was a lack of individual attention during ward rounds.

Conclusions

This study highlights important areas where ward rounds need improvement in order to maximize their benefit to the learners. There is a need to modify the current state of ward rounds in order to address the needs and expectations of trainees.</p
