    Migranti in preobrazba sosesk: raziskava družbenogospodarske preobrazbe sydneyjskega predmestja Lidcombe

    Eden od glavnih razlogov za negativen odnos do migrantov je dejstvo, da obremenijo objekte in infrastrukturo gostiteljske skupnosti, sami pa veliko ne prispevajo h gospodarstvu in družbi države gostiteljice. Ta negativni odnos je močen zlasti v mestih, kjer je pritisk na javne dobrine zgoščen in opaznejši. Zato so migrantske soseske še posebej zaničevane. S tem stereotipnim pogledom se ne ujemajo izkušnje z migranti v okolici pokopališča Rookwood Cemetery v Sydneyju, ki velja za »največjo nekropolo na južni polobli«. V tej migrantski soseski potekajo živahne in raznovrstne dejavnosti (zlasti korejskih) migrantov, ki so za to območje, znano pod imenom Lidcombe, nekaj popolnoma novega. Na podlagi različnih virov, analiziranih z zgodovinsko-strukturnega vidika migracijskih študij, vključno z arhivskimi raziskavami v lokalnih knjižnicah, pogovori z dolgoletnimi prebivalci tega območja in vidno etnografijo, so v članku predstavljeni zgodovina Lidcomba in njegove izkušnje z migranti v 21. stoletju. Pri tem avtorja na podlagi demografskih, družbenih in geografskih sprememb poudarjata prispevek migrantov k prenovi »mrtvega mesta« in izpodbijata podedovane stereotipe, ki pogosto vodijo k rasistični obravnavi migrantov kot »grešnih kozlov« ter na podlagi katerih se migranti prikazujejo kot »paraziti« in »kriminalci«, ki »izčrpavajo« gospodarstvo države gostiteljice. Predstavljena študija primera kaže, da lahko migranti prostore, v katerih živijo, pogosto preoblikujejo tako, da pozitivno in dolgotrajno prispevajo h gospodarstvu in družbi države gostiteljice. Ta primer bi morale kot pomembno lekcijo upoštevati tako evropske države, ki se soočajo z »migrantsko krizo«, kot tudi politiki po svetu, ki želijo gostiteljska gospodarstva in družbe pred migranti zaščititi z zidovi

    Changes in the expression of NO synthase isoforms after ozone: the effects of allergen exposure

    BACKGROUND: The functional role of nitric oxide (NO) and various nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms in asthma remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of ozone and ovalbumin (OVA) exposure on NOS isoforms. METHODS: The expression of inducible NOS (iNOS), neuronal NOS (nNOS), and endothelial NOS (eNOS) in lung tissue was measured. Enhanced pause (P(enh)) was measured as a marker of airway obstruction. Nitrate and nitrite in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid were measured using a modified Griess reaction. RESULTS: The nitrate concentration in BAL fluid from the OVA-sensitized/ozone-exposed/OVA-challenged group was greater than that of the OVA-sensitized/saline-challenged group. Methacholine-induced P(enh )was increased in the OVA-sensitized/ozone-exposed/OVA-challenged group, with a shift in the dose-response curve to the left, compared with the OVA-sensitized/saline-challenged group. The levels of nNOS and eNOS were increased significantly in the OVA-sensitized/ozone-exposed/OVA-challenged group and the iNOS levels were reduced compared with the OVA-sensitized/saline-challenged group. CONCLUSION: In mice, ozone is associated with increases in lung eNOS and nNOS, and decreases in iNOS. None of these enzymes are further affected by allergens, suggesting that the NOS isoforms play different roles in airway inflammation after ozone exposure

    A Novel Role of Three Dimensional Graphene Foam to Prevent Heater Failure during Boiling

    We report a novel boiling heat transfer (NBHT) in reduced graphene oxide (RGO) suspended in water (RGO colloid) near critical heat flux (CHF), which is traditionally the dangerous limitation of nucleate boiling heat transfer because of heater failure. When the heat flux reaches the maximum value (CHF) in RGO colloid pool boiling, the wall temperature increases gradually and slowly with an almost constant heat flux, contrary to the rapid wall temperature increase found during water pool boiling. The gained time by NBHT would provide the safer margin of the heat transfer and the amazing impact on the thermal system as the first report of graphene application. In addition, the CHF and boiling heat transfer performance also increase. This novel boiling phenomenon can effectively prevent heater failure because of the role played by the self-assembled three-dimensional foam-like graphene network (SFG).open2

    Prior Mating Experience Modulates the Dispersal of Drosophila in Males More Than in Females

    Cues from both an animal’s internal physiological state and its local environment may influence its decision to disperse. However, identifying and quantifying the causative factors underlying the initiation of dispersal is difficult in uncontrolled natural settings. In this study, we automatically monitored the movement of fruit flies and examined the influence of food availability, sex, and reproductive status on their dispersal between laboratory environments. In general, flies with mating experience behave as if they are hungrier than virgin flies, leaving at a greater rate when food is unavailable and staying longer when it is available. Males dispersed at a higher rate and were more active than females when food was unavailable, but tended to stay longer in environments containing food than did females. We found no significant relationship between weight and activity, suggesting the behavioral differences between males and females are caused by an intrinsic factor relating to the sex of a fly and not simply its body size. Finally, we observed a significant difference between the dispersal of the natural isolate used throughout this study and the widely-used laboratory strain, Canton-S, and show that the difference cannot be explained by allelic differences in the foraging gene

    Fabrication of Si1-xGex alloy nanowire field-effect transistors

    The authors present the demonstration of nanowire field-effect transistors incorporating group IV alloy nanowires, Si1-xGex. Single-crystalline Si1-xGex alloy nanowires were grown by a Au catalyst-assisted chemical vapor synthesis using SiH4 and GeH4 precursors, and the alloy composition was reproducibly controlled in the whole composition range by controlling the kinetics of catalytic decomposition of precursors. Complementary in situ doping of Si1-xGex nanowires was achieved by PH3 and B2H6 incorporation during the synthesis for n- and p-type field-effect transistors. The availability of both n- and p-type Si1-xGex nanowire circuit components suggests implications for group IV semiconductor nanowire electronics and optoelectronics. The reaction involves initial formation of PS at TiO2 core–shell nanoparticles via a mixed-solvent method, and then mixing with metal ions solution containing PEG, followed calcining in the atmosphere. The as-prepared hollow pigments exhibit uniform size, bright color, and tunable density, which are fit for electronic paper display

    The Cell Shape-determining Csd6 Protein from Helicobacter pylori Constitutes a New Family of L,D-Carboxypeptidase

    Helicobacter pylori causes gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric cancer. Its high motility in the viscous gastric mucosa facilitates colonization of the human stomach and depends on the helical cell shape and the flagella. In H. pylori, Csd6 is one of the cell shape-determining proteins that play key roles in alteration of cross-linking or by trimming of peptidoglycan muropeptides. Csd6 is also involved in deglycosylation of the flagellar protein FlaA. To better understand its function, biochemical, biophysical, and structural characterizations were carried out. We show that Csd6 has a three-domain architecture and exists as a dimer in solution. The N-terminal domain plays a key role in dimerization. The middle catalytic domain resembles those of L,D-transpeptidases, but its pocket-shaped active site is uniquely defined by the four loops I to IV, among which loops I and III show the most distinct variations from the known L,D-transpeptidases. Mass analyses confirm that Csd6 functions only as an L,D-carboxypeptidase and not as an L,D-transpeptidase. The D-Ala-complexed structure suggests possible binding modes of both the substrate and product to the catalytic domain. The C-terminal nuclear transport factor 2-like domain possesses a deep pocket for possible binding of pseudaminic acid, and in silico docking supports its role in deglycosylation of flagellin. On the basis of these findings, it is proposed that H. pylori Csd6 and its homologs constitute a new family of L,D-carboxypeptidase.     Macrophage-derived human resistin is induced in multiple helminth infections and promotes inflammatory monocytes and increased parasite burden.

    Parasitic helminth infections can be associated with lifelong morbidity such as immune-mediated organ failure. A better understanding of the host immune response to helminths could provide new avenues to promote parasite clearance and/or alleviate infection-associated morbidity. Murine resistin-like molecules (RELM) exhibit pleiotropic functions following helminth infection including modulating the host immune response; however, the relevance of human RELM proteins in helminth infection is unknown. To examine the function of human resistin (hResistin), we utilized transgenic mice expressing the human resistin gene (hRetnTg+). Following infection with the helminth Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nb), hResistin expression was significantly upregulated in infected tissue. Compared to control hRetnTg- mice, hRetnTg+ mice suffered from exacerbated Nb-induced inflammation characterized by weight loss and increased infiltration of inflammatory monocytes in the lung, along with elevated Nb egg burdens and delayed parasite expulsion. Genome-wide transcriptional profiling of the infected tissue revealed that hResistin promoted expression of proinflammatory cytokines and genes downstream of toll-like receptor signaling. Moreover, hResistin preferentially bound lung monocytes, and exogenous treatment of mice with recombinant hResistin promoted monocyte recruitment and proinflammatory cytokine expression. In human studies, increased serum resistin was associated with higher parasite load in individuals infected with soil-transmitted helminths or filarial nematode Wuchereria bancrofti, and was positively correlated with proinflammatory cytokines. Together, these studies identify human resistin as a detrimental factor induced by multiple helminth infections, where it promotes proinflammatory cytokines and impedes parasite clearance. Targeting the resistin/proinflammatory cytokine immune axis may provide new diagnostic or treatment strategies for helminth infection and associated immune-mediated pathology
