    Who goes to a sexual health clinic? Gender differences in service utilisation.

    Aim: Our aim was to review utilisation of the Hamilton Sexual Health Clinic (Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand) with regard to gender differences. Methods: Notes of those attending during 9 months (1 February 2008–31 October 2008) were reviewed—and their demographic details, source of referral, reasons for attending, and diagnostic coding data were compared. In addition, Waikato Hospital laboratory provided Chlamydia trachomatis test results for the study period. Data was analysed for gender differences. Results: Overall, more women attended than men. By age bands, more 15–19 year old women than men attended (23.3% vs 12.5%, p<0.001) but, for all age-bands 20 years and older, men were at least as likely to attend as women. Further, for those aged 25– 29 years (20.3% vs 17%, p<0.5) and 45 years and older (11.9% vs 7.4%, p<0.001), more men than women of the same-age band were seen. Men who attended were more likely to self-refer (58.5% vs 43%, p<0.001) and less likely to be asymptomatic (30.3% vs 38.4%, p<0.001). Conclusions: Our data suggest men aged 20 years and older are at least, if not more, likely than women to attend a sexual health clinic for sexual health concerns. However, there appears to be under-utilisation by younger men. To improve sexual health for men and women, help-seeking must be timely and effective. We need to better understand and address sexual healthcare barriers for young men

    Understanding consumer responses to special event entertainment (SEE) in shopping centres

    This paper reviews the literature on the use of entertainment in shopping centres and outlines the constructs believed to impact upon consumer’s responses to special event entertainment. Special event entertainment (SEE) refers to entertainment events or activities that are offered on an occasional, temporary or discontinued basis in shopping centres. Examples of SEE include school holiday entertainment and fashion shows (Parsons, 2003; Sit, Merrilees, & Birch, 2003). Using SEE, shopping centre management seeks to entice consumer patronage, increase patron traffic or promote the shopping centre brand. Despite the popularity of SEE in shopping centres, very little academic research (e.g. Parsons, 2003; Sit, Merrilees, & Birch, 2003) has either conceptually or empirically examined how consumers perceive or respond to SEE. This research presents a conceptual model that examines the determinants and outcomes of consumer responses to SEE, In particular, consumer responses to SEE are represented by SEE proneness and overall appreciation of SEE. These SEE responses are proposed to be determined by sensation-seeking tendencies and perceived value of SEE. Eight propositions are presented to explain the relationships of SEE responses with their determinants and outcomes. These relationships will be empirically tested in future research. Research implications of the conceptual model are also presented

    Sports consumption behaviour among generation Y in mainland China

    The Chinese Government has relaxed its tight control over sport (Stensholt 2004), the country is set to host the 2008 Olympic Games and every major sport franchise in the world is making plans for a full assault on the Chinese market. The game is on in mainland China, however despite the excitement about the market there is little understanding of sport consumption in China or the attitudes and behaviours of potential sport consumers. The bulk of the literature in consumer behaviour within sports relates specifically to developed industrialised nations, specifically USA, Canada, Europe and Australia. Of particular interest to academics and practitioners alike should be the potential of the huge generation Y market in China. Generation Y (those born after 1978) represent not only a current lucrative market but also represent the future development of sport and sport consumption in China. This exploratory study has revealed that generation Y consumers in China exhibit sports consumption behaviours which differ in numerous respects from their counterparts in the USA and deserve deeper study

    Toward a Theoretical View of Dance Leadership

    This is a theoretical dissertation, creating a beginning understanding of dance leadership.The subject is absent from both the dance and the leadership literature; therefore the concepts have been developed from the experiences of practice and integrated with concepts from those of outside disciplines through the process of reflective synthesis.In order to create this beginning understanding, dance leadership is established herein in its own domain, separate from both dance and leadership.It is a form of informal leadership—that is, not conferred by title or position within an organization—specifically leading in place, practiced by individual or groups of dancers with the goal of furthering dance.It occurs in the space of dance leadership, different from the artist/s work in dance; and involves stepping forward into a space which recognizes an obligation to dance.As leadership in place, it carries no expectation of a permanent change in role; it is not tied to a title or an organization.Dance has been established herein as an intrinsic human activity; therefore dance leadership activities may be expected to ease/further the human condition, but the direction of the activity is toward furthering dance.Dancers function as leaders by virtue of the knowledge and skills they hold as dancers; their leadership is tied inextricably to their practice and is rooted in the fact of their being artists.Dance leadership is practiced at least in the forms of dancing, speaking, and writing; there may be other forms as well.The establishment of the domain of dance leadership proposes a number of emergent issues to be addressed by dance leaders, as well as issues of concern for dance, leadership, and other academic disciplines.The electronic version of this dissertation is at OhioLink ETD Center, www.ohiolink.edu/etd.This pdf is accompanied by two mp4 files
