The United States-Mexico border historically has been characterized by its isolation from the core of both nations. The United States side has viewed the border as a place of lawlessness, poverty, backwardness, and ethnic difference, physically and culturally distant from either the Midwestern heartlands or the urban melting pots.\u27 \u27 Mexicans, too, traditionally dismissed their northern borderlanders as pocho, tainted by their proximity to the United States. Margaret Montoya captures the view from both sides: Border towns everywhere are different, incorporating the characteristics of the nation-states they link together, but nowhere are they as distinct from their respective core zones as along the United States/Mexico border

Pre-adolescent children are not clinically labeled passive-aggressive, yet at home, in the regular education classroom, and in programs for the emotionally disturbed we are challenged with pre-adolescents who exhibit tendencies toward this personality disorder. This behavior was unique in its manifestations and to appropriately cope with a child who displays these behaviors, educators and parents need to develop an effective behavioral modification and management program within the child\u27s environment. This study focused on definitions applicable to this study and the causes and characteristics of passive-aggressive personality disorder. It was limited to children aged six to pre-teen. Current behavior modifications and behavior management systems were reviewed and presented to enable parents and educators to effectively and appropriately interact and successfully cope with a passive-aggressive personality disordered child. Chapter two presents a review of the literature on this topic and presents recommended appropriate coping interventions and behavior management programs

From the Group Comes the Nation: China’s First Mass Political Organization, the Baohuanghui

We recently learned that the Chinese government has deemed the term “civil society” [gongmin shehui 公民社会] too sensitive to use in Chinese news reports. Apparently, even the mention of Chinese citizens voluntarily joining together for a common cause challenges the authority of China’s rulers, especially when that cause is political. Such aversion to autonomous organizations goes back to imperial China, and it was not until the last throes of the Qing dynasty that the first truly political Chinese organization emerged and grew. And that organization had no choice but to be based outside of China

In this Article, we engage the current human rights debate that dichotomizes prostitution either as a modern form of slavery or as the exercise of the right to work. This framework effectively sets up a coercion/consent polarity. These poles raise fundamental human rights issues; both the prohibition against slavery and the right to work are matters addressed by and central to the international human rights paradigm. Yet we argue in this Article that the human rights issues raised by prostitution cannot properly be studied nor moved towards meaningful resolution in the context of the prevailing polarity. Prostitution in its current forms rightfully can be understood as having aspects both of work and of servitude
