Changing discourses in women and science policy: responding to austerity in gender and SET
The issue of ‘women in science’ has been a recurring theme in government policy both in the UK and the EU (and indeed globally) for several decades. While considerable research has been done about the problem (Barnard et al 2010), most initiatives during the 80s and 90s tended to be localised and there was little attention to this within broader science policy despite intermittent funding most often linked to labour market concerns. However, in the UK the UKRC was set up and funded in 2004 as part of the government’s science and skills strategy (Greenfield et al, 2002) which for the first time gave substantial centralised and high level funding to support entry, retention and progression of women in science, engineering and technology (SET). Yet this support has been short lived - with government funding for the UKRC now being phased out as part of public sector cuts there is an increasing emphasis on ‘mainstreaming’ and this presents questions about what the future gender equality landscape may present for women in SET in the UK and how to respond to this. Using examples from policy documents and reports, the paper will discuss changing policy discourses that have addressed women, science and technology and considers how public spending cuts might impact on the continuation of policy and practice in this field

People Like Me Evaluation Report
People Like Me is an intervention to support the increase of women and girls into STEM education and careers. As such it sits in a long tradition of efforts - in the UK and globally - to tackle gender inequality in the study of STEM subjects, and leading to employment/careers in the scientific, engineering and technology sectors.
People Like Me is both a resource and a strategy with a number of potential points of impact. At the core is the concept that raising awareness of the range of possible careers and jobs in STEM will encourage girls to continue with studying science subjects in school, and also aspire to careers in these sectors.
This report is the outcome of an independent evaluation carried out by the Open University into the impact and effectiveness of the intervention

The Clinical Utility of a Precision Medicine Blood Test Incorporating Age, Sex, and Gene Expression for Evaluating Women with Stable Symptoms Suggestive of Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease: Analysis from the PRESET Registry.
Background: Evaluating women with symptoms suggestive of coronary artery disease (CAD) remains challenging. A blood-based precision medicine test yielding an age/sex/gene expression score (ASGES) has shown clinical validity in the diagnosis of obstructive CAD. We assessed the effect of the ASGES on the management of women with suspected obstructive CAD in a community-based registry. Materials and Methods: The prospective PRESET (A Registry to Evaluate Patterns of Care Associated with the Use of Corus® CAD in Real World Clinical Care Settings) Registry (NCT01677156) enrolled 566 patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of stable obstructive CAD from 21 United States primary care practices from 2012 to 2014. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and referrals to cardiology or further functional and/or anatomical cardiac studies after ASGES testing were collected for this subgroup analysis of women from the PRESET Registry. Patients were followed for 1-year post-ASGES testing. Results: This study cohort included 288 women with a median age 57 years. The median body mass index was 29.2, with hyperlipidemia and hypertension present in 48% and 43% of patients, respectively. Median ASGES was 8.5 (range 1-40), with 218 (76%) patients having low (≤15) ASGES. Clinicians referred 9% (20/218) low ASGES versus 44% (31/70) elevated ASGES women for further cardiac evaluation (odds ratio 0.14, p < 0.0001, adjusted for patient demographics and clinical covariates). Across the score range, higher ASGES were associated with a higher likelihood of posttest cardiac referral. At 1-year follow-up, low ASGES women experienced fewer major adverse cardiac events than elevated ASGES women (1.3% vs. 4.2% respectively, p = 0.16). Conclusions: Incorporation of ASGES into the diagnostic workup demonstrated clinical utility by helping clinicians identify women less likely to benefit from further cardiac evaluation
PENGARUH MEDIA TANAM DAN KONSENTRASI PUPUK ORGANIK CAIR TERHADAP PERTUMBUHAN DAN PRODUKSI TANAMAN SELADA MERAH (Lactuca sativa L.)
Planting media and concentration of liquid organic fertilizer were the main components that play a role as a medium to grow plants and nutrients supply for the red lettuce. To obtain appropriate planting medium and concentration of liquid organic fertilizer for growth and production of red lettuce plant, an experiment was conducted using Randomized Block Design Factorial, i.e Liquid Organic Fertilizer concentration with 6 treatment level, K0 (Without Treatment), K1 (POC 5 cc/L) (POC 20 cc/L), K4 (POC 20 cc/L) and K5 (POC 25 cc/L) and Planting Media with 3 levels i.e, M1 (3:1), M2 (4:1) and M3 (5:1). The concentration of liquid organic fertilizer gave very significant effects to the height parameters of plant (cm), number of leaves (leaf), leaf area (cm2), fresh weight of crown (g) and fresh root weight (g). Planting media had very significant effects on fresh root weight (g), ratio of root and canopy (%) and harvest index (%)
Exploring the influence of instant messaging and video conferencing on the quality of project communication
Growth in computer-mediated communication
(CMC) technologies such as instant messaging (IM)
and video conferencing (VC) has led to a need to
explore the utilisation and influence of these tools on
the quality of project communication, which must
still be established. This article reports the results of a
survey conducted among 210 project practitioners
using CMC in various industries to determine how,
why and what each medium is used for, and how
these media influence factors that promote quality
communication. Some results showed that the use of
both instant messaging and video conferencing in
projects is moderate and both improve the quality of
communication in virtual teams, however in different
ways.Die groei in rekenaar-bemiddelde kommunikasietegnologie
soos kitsboodskappe
en videokonferensies
het gelei tot ʼn behoefte om die benutting en
invloed van hierdie tegnologie op die gehalte van
projekkommunikasie te verstaan aangesien dit nog
nie vasgestel is nie.
bevorder.
Leadership styles in projects : current trends and future opportunities
Currently, many organisations experience challenges as a result of uncertainty, fast-changing environments, globalisation, and increasingly complex work tasks. In order to adapt to these challenges, a shift in leadership style may be needed. Traditionally, leadership has been seen as a vertical relationship (top-down influence). For a number of decades, this vertical leadership model has been the principal one in the leadership field; but lately, shared and balanced leadership have gained importance, especially in the project management literature. This theoretical study highlights some differences between ‘leadership’ and ‘management’, and explores current trends in the leadership literature. It especially focuses on vertical, shared, and balanced leadership in project management, and identifies future opportunities for research. Presented at the 29th annual conference of the Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering (SAIIE), held from 24-26 October 2018 in Stellenbosch, South Africahttp://sajie.journals.ac.zaam2019Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM

The impact of a call centre on communication in a programme and its projects
Call centres are increasingly being utilised in public sector programmes to facilitate and
manage communication between numerous stakeholders. Yet, the impact of call centres on
projects has not been investigated. This paper reports on a survey with 92 respondents that
assessed the impact of a call centre for a repair and maintenance programme. An
empirically verified model is presented to illustrate the relationship between call centre
communication and project performance. A balance of frequent informal and formal
communication is shown to reduce mistrust and conflict of interest resulting from each party
trying to maximise his respective economic position in the principal-agency relationship. The
data provides evidence that a call centre improves the communication, collaboration and
trust in project principal-agency relationships which, in turn, is perceived to contribute to
project performance.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/ijpromanhb2016Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM
