Lecithin, a major surface active substance of surfactant system of the lung was estimated in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in healthy adult male albino rats after administration of hydrocortisone or histamine. BAL was perfomed in three groups of animals following intravenous administration of 2.5 mg. of hydrocortisone sodium succinate at 10 minute, 30 minute and 60 minute intervals respectively. Similarly, BAL fluid was obtained in three groups of animals following subcutaneous administration of 0.06mg of histamine diphosphate at 10 minute, 30 minute and 60 minute intervals. Lecithin content in BAL fluid was estimated by enzymatic method using Boehringer-Mannheim Kits. The results obtained from these animals were compared with those from control animals who received neither hydrocortisone nor histamine. A highly significant reduction in lecithin levels indicating a decrease in surfactant activity was observed within 10 minutes after administration of hydrocortisone or histamine. However, a gradual increase in lecithin levels was observed by one hour in both cases indicating an acute decrease in pulmonary surfactant activity. The effect observed might be due to a sudden inhibition of secretion of pulmonary surfactant by Type II cells or a sudden increase in uptake by Type II cells or both. Further studies are needed to explore the mechanisms involved. Since there is paucity of information on the effect of these substances on surfactant system of lung in adult human being, the findings in the present study clearly indicate a need to assay lecithin content in BAL fluid in patients receiving corticosteroids, as for example, in adult respiratory distress syndrome and bronchial asthma, and, also in patients with allergic disorders such as pulmonary aspergillosis

Knowledge-based methods for automatic extraction of domain-specific ontologies

Semantic web technology aims at developing methodologies for representing large amount of knowledge in web accessible form. The semantics of knowledge should be easy to interpret and understand by computer programs, so that sharing and utilizing knowledge across the Web would be possible. Domain specific ontologies form the basis for knowledge representation in the semantic web. Research on automated development of ontologies from texts has become increasingly important because manual construction of ontologies is labor intensive and costly, and, at the same time, large amount of texts for individual domains is already available in electronic form. However, automatic extraction of domain specific ontologies is challenging due to the unstructured nature of texts and inherent semantic ambiguities in natural language. Moreover, the large size of texts to be processed renders full-fledged natural language processing methods infeasible. In this dissertation, we develop a set of knowledge-based techniques for automatic extraction of ontological components (concepts, taxonomic and non-taxonomic relations) from domain texts. The proposed methods combine information retrieval metrics, lexical knowledge-base(like WordNet), machine learning techniques, heuristics, and statistical approaches to meet the challenge of the task. These methods are domain-independent and automatic approaches. For extraction of concepts, the proposed WNSCA+{PE, POP} method utilizes the lexical knowledge base WordNet to improve precision and recall over the traditional information retrieval metrics. A WordNet-based approach, the compound term heuristic, and a supervised learning approach are developed for taxonomy extraction. We also developed a weighted word-sense disambiguation method for use with the WordNet-based approach. An unsupervised approach using log-likelihood ratios is proposed for extracting non-taxonomic relations. Further more, a supervised approach is investigated to learn the semantic constraints for identifying relations from prepositional phrases. The proposed methods are validated by experiments with the Electronic Voting and the Tender Offers, Mergers, and Acquisitions domain corpus. Experimental results and comparisons with some existing approaches clearly indicate the superiority of our methods. In summary, a good combination of information retrieval, lexical knowledge base, statistics and machine learning methods in this study has led to the techniques efficient and effective for extracting ontological components automatically

    Get PDF
Increased interest in romantic relationships is central in adolescents’ lives and has long been considered defining features of adolescence. Romantic relationships have significant influence on emotional wellbeing of adolescents. In Indian context, scientific literature on adolescent girls in romantic relationship is very minimal and studies focused upon sexuality-related issues and pre-marital sexual relationship. Due to social and cultural aspects, few adolescent girls who are involved in romantic relationship run away from home. These girls would come under care and protection under many circumstances such as child marriage, teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse, etc. The present study analyses the case reports in understanding the issues of adolescents in RR issues and the process of interventions provided. A total of 50 girls who were in RR were selected for the study Mean age is 16.34 years (SD ± 0.93) with a range of 14–18 years. About 78% were from lower socio economic status. It is important to understand their issues to provide psycho social intervention and facilitate healthy transition to adulthood. This has implication for designing intervention based on development perspective. Always adolescents in romantic relationship are under the conflict over prioritizing between their parents versus their romantic partner, when they forced to choose one

Variation in arterial supply of human vermiform appendix

Precise knowledge of vascular variation and planning of conducting surgical and radiological procedures is important during appendectomy. During the routine medical undergraduate educational dissection of 63 year old male cadaver we found appendicular artery (AA) a branch of the inferior division of the ileocolic artery (ICA). The AA passed in front of the terminal part of the ileum, and entered the mesoappendix of the vermiform appendix. It runs near the free margin of the mesoappendix and ends in branches which supplied the appendix. The reminding of this type of variation is also important while performing the surgeries or dissections

Studies on mechanical behavior of glass epoxy composites with induced defects and correlations with NDT characterization parameters

Degradation in mechanical properties (compression, flexural and ILS) of glass epoxy composite laminates with induced defects (simulating delaminations) was studied. The defects were characterized by using the A-scan ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. The two A-scan parameters, viz. the back wall echo amplitude and time of flight, were followed respectively, as functions of the defect size (diameter) and its location in the laminate thickness. The mechanical properties of laminates were evaluated destructively for different defect sizes and locations. An attempt has been made to express the mechanical properties in terms of the two NDT scan parameters characterizing the defects and empirical equations presente

High quality video broad casting is of high demand both with DVB-2 (Digital Video Broad casting) and Internet services. But these broadcasted data is distributed without protection. Invisible mode of video watermarking is one of the solutions, here in this paper a novel approach of data embedding scheme is proposed for MPEG-4 videos with different parity check codes and processed in transform domain. A subjective and objective analysis is performed to examine the proposed approach. Experimental results on various videos have shown that LDPC (Low density parity check) code with Gold spreading sequence in transform domain outperforms when compared against the other methods

    Get PDF
To protect patient health data (PHD) and ensure the security of healthcare IoT devices, this paper presents an Advanced Signature-Based Encryption algorithm (ASE), a blockchain analytical model, a mathematical framework, and an Adaptive Fog Computing based Three-tier Architecture (AFCTTA). The aim is to enable safe access to real-time services and IoT for end users. This AFCTTA was constructed on a blockchain platform, providing trustworthy data transmission between patients, clinicians, fog nodes, and IoT. Additionally, a decentralized fog computing-based blockchain analytical model along with a mathematical framework were produced to ensure secure transfer of data and transactions within healthcare IoT. To ensure secure communication between devices and fog nodes, a private block chain was implemented in order to validate certificates and keys. As an added security measure, an ASE method was devised. This algorithm utilizes War Optimization Strategy (WOA) to select optimal keys for securing data from heterogeneous and homogeneous IoT healthcare equipment. Through its encryption process utilizing various cryptographic techniques, all traffic is encrypted before being decrypted once it reaches its intended destination. To validate its proposed approach, UCI machine library is collecting health care data. To execute this method, Python is utilized and compared to traditional algorithms such as Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA), Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC), and Tiny Lightweight Symmetric Encryption-Aquila Optimization Algorithm (TLSE-AOA)

Background: Increased interest in romantic relationship (RR) is central to adolescents’ lives. RR has a significant influence on the emotional well-being of the adolescents and their future life. Objective: The present study aims at understanding the issues and concerns of adolescent girls in RR who come under care and protection issue. Methods: The study adopts a retrospective exploratory research design and analyzed the case reports maintained by psychiatric social workers. Reports elicit the information about the RR, marriage with the romantic partner, reason for run away with the marital partner, etc. Results: Majority of the adolescents run away with their romantic partner to get married and more than three-fourth of the adolescent girls believed that having sexual intercourse with their romantic partner would get their marriage approval and felt that marriage gave them sanction for the sexual relationship. Adolescents were worried about parent’s rejection of their romantic partner and had guilt feeling that they were not able to meet the expectations of parents nor they were able to fulfill the dreams of their parents. Most of the adolescents were also aware that their romantic involvement has been one of the reasons for academic decline; some have to drop out from the schools. Conclusion: It is important to understand the issues of adolescent girls in RR so that it would help us in designing interventions to facilitate developmental needs and for the healthy transition to adulthood
