    Quality assessment of randomized controlled trial abstracts on drug therapy of periodontal disease from the abstracts published in dental Science Citation Indexed journals in the last ten years

    Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide the highest level of evidence and are likely to influence clinical decision-making. This study evaluated the reporting quality of RCT abstracts on drug therapy of periodontal disease and assessed the associated factors. The Pubmed database was searched for periodontal RCTs published in Science Citation Indexed (SCI) dental journals from 2010/01/01 to 2019/07/17. Information was extracted from the abstracts according to a modified Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guideline checklist. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and the statistical associations were examined using the linear regression analysis (P <0.05). This study retrieved 1715 articles and 249 of them were finally included. The average overall CONSORT score was 15.6 ± 3.4, which represented 40.9% (±0.6) of CONSORT criteria filling. The reporting rate of some items (trial design, numbers analyzed, confidence intervals, intention-to-treat analysis or per-protocol analysis, harms, registration) was less than 30%. The adequate reporting rate of some items (participants, randomization, numbers analyzed, confidence intervals, intention-to-treat analysis or per protocol analysis) was no more than 4%. None of the abstracts reported funding. According to the multivariable linear regression results, number of authors (P=0.030), word count (P <0.001), continent (P=0.003), structured format (P <0.001), type of periodontal disease (P <0.001) and international collaboration (P=0.023) have a significant association with reporting quality. The quality of RCT abstracts on drug therapy of periodontal disease in SCI dental journals remained suboptimal. More efforts should be made to improve RCT abstracts reporting quality

    Ferromagnetism below the Stoner limit in La-doped SrB_6

    Spin-polarized band calculations for LaSr_7B_{48} show a weak ferro-magnetic state. This is despite a low density-of-states (DOS) and a low Stoner factor. The reason for the magnetic state is found to be associated with a gain in potential energy in addition to the exchange energy, as a spin-splitting is imposed. An impurity like La DOS is essential for this effect. It makes a correction to the Stoner factor, and provides an explanation of the recently observed weak ferro-magnetism in doped hexaborides.Comment: 6 pages, 2 tables, 1 figur

    Hydroxy-PCBs, PBDEs, and HBCDDs in serum from an elderly population of Swedish fishermen's wives and associations with bone density

    Lack of human exposure data is frequently reported as a critical gap in risk assessments of environmental pollutants, especially regarding "new" pollutants. The objectives of this study were to assess serum levels of the persistent 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153), hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyl metabolites (OH-PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs) in a group of Swedish middle-aged and elderly women expected to be relatively highly exposed, and to evaluate the impact of potential determinants (e.g., fish intake, age) for the inter-individual variation, as well as to investigate the association between these pollutants and bone density. No associations were found between bone mineral density or biochemical markers of bone metabolism and the analyzed environmental pollutants. Relatively high levels of CB-153 (median 260 ng/g fat) and Sigma(3)-OH- PCBs (median 1.7 ng/mL serum), and low concentrations of Sigma 6PBDEs (median 3.6 ng/g fat) were determined. Total level of HBCDDs in serum was quantified by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (median 0.5 ng/g fat). HBCDD diastereomeric and enantiomeric patterns were determined by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. The dominating stereoisomer was (-)alpha-HBCDD, but 1-3% of gamma-HBCDD was also detected in the serum samples

    A New Robust Optimization Approach for Scheduling Under Uncertainty:

    Abstract The problem of scheduling under bounded uncertainty is addressed. We propose a novel robust optimization methodology, which when applied to mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems produces &quot;robust&quot; solutions which are in a sense immune against bounded uncertainty. Both the coefficients in the objective function, the left-hand-side parameters and the right-hand-side parameters of the inequalities are considered. Robust optimization techniques are developed for two types of uncertain data: bounded uncertainty and bounded and symmetric uncertainty. By introducing a small number of auxiliary variables and constraints, a deterministic robust counterpart problem is formulated to determine the optimal solution given the (relative) magnitude of uncertain data, feasibility tolerance, and &quot;reliability level&quot; when a probabilistic measurement is applied. The robust optimization approach is then applied to the scheduling under uncertainty problem.     Exact-exchange density-functional theory for quasi-two-dimensional electron gases

    A simple exact-exchange density-functional method for a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas with variable density is presented. An analytical expression for the exact-exchange potential with only one occupied subband is provided, without approximations. When more subbands are occupied the exact-exchange potential is obtained numerically. The theory shows that, in contradiction with LDA, the exact-exchange potential exhibits discontinuities and the system suffers a zero-temperature first-order transition each time a subband is occupied. Results suggesting that the translational symmetry might be spontaneously broken at zero temperature are presented. An extension of the theory to finite temperatures allows to describe a drop in the intersubband spacing in good quantitative agreement with recent experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    Charge Density Wave in Two-Dimensional Electron Liquid in Weak Magnetic Field

    We study the ground state of a clean two-dimensional electron liquid in a weak magnetic field where N1N \gg 1 lower Landau levels are completely filled and the upper level is partially filled. It is shown that the electrons at the upper Landau level form domains with filling factor equal to one and zero. The domains alternate with a spatial period of order of the cyclotron radius, which is much larger than the interparticle distance at the upper Landau level. The one-particle density of states, which can be probed by tunneling experiments, is shown to have a pseudogap linearly dependent on the magnetic field in the limit of large NN.Comment: Several errors correcte

    Fluctuations and Instabilities of Ferromagnetic Domain Wall pairs in an External Magnetic Field

    Soliton excitations and their stability in anisotropic quasi-1D ferromagnets are analyzed analytically. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the lowest lying topological excitations are shown to be either soliton-soliton or soliton-antisoliton pairs. In ferromagnetic samples of macro- or mesoscopic size, these configurations correspond to twisted or untwisted pairs of Bloch walls. It is shown that the fluctuations around these configurations are governed by the same set of operators. The soliton-antisoliton pair has exactly one unstable mode and thus represents a critical nucleus for thermally activated magnetization reversal in effectively one-dimensional systems. The soliton-soliton pair is stable for small external fields but becomes unstable for large magnetic fields. From the detailed expression of this instability threshold and an analysis of nonlocal demagnetizing effects it is shown that the relative chirality of domain walls can be detected experimentally in thin ferromagnetic films. The static properties of the present model are equivalent to those of a nonlinear sigma-model with anisotropies.     Structure and Magnetism of Neutral and Anionic Palladium Clusters

    The properties of neutral and anionic Pd_N clusters were investigated with spin-density-functional calculations. The ground state structures are three-dimensional for N>3 and they are magnetic with a spin-triplet for 2<=N<=7 and a spin nonet for N=13 neutral clusters. Structural- and spin-isomers were determined and an anomalous increase of the magnetic moment with temperature is predicted for a Pd_7 ensemble.     Density-functional theory of quantum wires and dots in a strong magnetic field

    We study the competition between the exchange and the direct Coulomb interaction near the edge of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field using density-functional theory in a local approximation for the exchange-energy functional. Exchange is shown to play a significant role in reducing the spatial extent of the compressible edge channel regions obtained from an electrostatic description. The transition from the incompressible edge channels of the Hartree-Fock picture to the broad, compressible strips predicted by electrostatics occurs within a narrow and experimentally accessible range of confinement strengths.Comment: 24 pages latex and 10 postscript figures in self extracting fil
