Deposition of Antimicrobial Copper-Rich Coatings on Polymers by Atmospheric Pressure Jet Plasmas
Inanimate surfaces serve as a permanent reservoir for infectious microorganisms, which is a growing problem in areas in everyday life. Coating of surfaces with inorganic antimicrobials, such as copper, can contribute to reduce the adherence and growth of microorganisms. The use of a DC operated air plasma jet for the deposition of copper thin films on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) substrates is reported. ABS is a widespread material used in consumer applications, including hospitals. The influence of gas flow rate and input current on thin film characteristics and its bactericidal effect have been studied. Results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy confirmed the presence of thin copper layers on plasma-exposed ABS and the formation of copper particles with a size in the range from 20 to 100 nm, respectively. The bactericidal properties of the copper-coated surfaces were tested against Staphylococcus aureus. A reduction in growth by 93% compared with the attachment of bacteria on untreated samples was observed for coverage of the surface with 7 at. % copper
Tunable ultrabroadband hybrid THz emitter combining a spintronic THz source and a GaSe crystal
Linear terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a sensitive probe for
material characterization including thickness measurements of thin layers.
These applications critically rely on a sufficiently large bandwidth, which is
not straightforwardly available in typical THz-TDS systems. Here, we introduce
a hybrid THz-emitter concept based on a spintronic THz emitter that is
deposited onto a thin freestanding GaSe nonlinear crystal. By tuning the
parameters of this hybrid emitter, we generate an ultrabroadband spectrum
covering the full range from 1 to 40 THz without any gaps at high spectral
amplitudes, resulting in ultrashort THz-pulse durations of only 32 fs. Finally,
we demonstrate the straightforward tunability of the carrier-envelope phase
from unipolar or bipolar THz pulses with ultrashort duration
Coupling Broadband Terahertz Dipoles to Microscale Resonators
Optically driven spintronic emitters are a unique class of terahertz (THz) sources due to their quasi-two-dimensional geometry and thereby their capability to effectively couple to resonator near fields. Global excitation of the emitters often obstructs the intricate details of the coupling mechanisms between local THz dipoles and the individual modes of resonator structures. Here, we demonstrate the spatial mapping of the coupling strength between a micrometer-scale terahertz source on a spintronic emitter and far-field light mediated by a structured metallic environment. For a bow-tie geometry, experimental results are reproduced by a numerical model, providing insights into the microscopic coupling mechanisms. The broad applicability of the technique is showcased by extracting the THz mode structure in split-ring resonator metasurfaces and linear arrays. With these developments, planar THz sources with tailored spectral and angular emission profiles become accessible
