    The Effect of wake Turbulence Intensity on Transition in a Compressor Cascade

    Direct numerical simulations of separating flow along a section at midspan of a low-pressure V103 compressor cascade with periodically incoming wakes were performed. By varying the strength of the wake, its influence on both boundary layer separation and bypass transition were examined. Due to the presence of small-scale three-dimensional fluctuations in the wakes, the flow along the pressure surface undergoes bypass transition. Only in the weak-wake case, the boundary layer reaches a nearly-separated state between impinging wakes. In all simulations, the flow along the suction surface was found to separate. In the simulation with the strong wakes, separation is intermittently suppressed as the periodically passing wakes managed to trigger turbulent spots upstream of the location of separation. As these turbulent spots convect downstream, they locally suppress separation. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

    An americium‐fueled gas core nuclear rocket

    A gas core fission reactor that utilizes americium in place of uranium is examined for potential utilization as a nuclear rocket for space propulsion. The isomer 242mAm with a half life of 141 years is obtained from an (n, γ) capture reaction with 241Am, and has the highest known thermal fission cross section. We consider a 7500 MW reactor, whose propulsion characteristics with 235U have already been established, and re‐examine it using americium.     Toward quantitative super-resolution microscopy: molecular maps with statistical guarantees

    Quantifying the number of molecules from fluorescence microscopy measurements is an important topic in cell biology and medical research. In this work, we present a consecutive algorithm for super-resolution (stimulated emission depletion (STED)) scanning microscopy that provides molecule counts in automatically generated image segments and offers statistical guarantees in form of asymptotic confidence intervals. To this end, we first apply a multiscale scanning procedure on STED microscopy measurements of the sample to obtain a system of significant regions, each of which contains at least one molecule with prescribed uniform probability. This system of regions will typically be highly redundant and consists of rectangular building blocks. To choose an informative but non-redundant subset of more naturally shaped regions, we hybridize our system with the result of a generic segmentation algorithm. The diameter of the segments can be of the order of the resolution of the microscope. Using multiple photon coincidence measurements of the same sample in confocal mode, we are then able to estimate the brightness and number of molecules and give uniform confidence intervals on the molecule counts for each previously constructed segment.     Smoking cessation in pregnant women using financial incentives: a feasibility study

    BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of smoking pregnant women in Dutch areas with lower socioeconomic status and the consecutively harmful exposure to tobacco to both mother and child, depicted a high need for a novel intervention. According to other studies, the utilisation of financial incentives appeared to be a promising method for smoking cessation in pregnant women. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of implementing contingent financial incentives as smoking cessation support for pregnant women in the Netherlands. METHODS: Feasibility study consisting of four developmental phases: (1) acceptability of Dutch population regarding financial-incentive-intervention by conducting an online questionnaire, (2) composing a pilot study utilising the financial-incentive-intervention in clinical practice, (3) execution of the composed pilot study and (4) evaluation of the executed pilot study utilising a mixed-methods approach. A financial-incentive-intervention, given in a contingent financial scheme (during five consequential appointments, respectively €25/€50/€100/€150/€250), if smoking abstinence was proven by the amount of cotinine in the urine of the pregnant women measured utilising a urine dipstick test. The public acceptability for the financial-incentive-intervention was assessed using 5-Likert scales. The number of pregnant women able to abstain from smoking during the pilot study and utilising the financial-incentive-intervention in clinical practice were used to assess the prosperity and practicality of the pilot study respectively. The pilot study was evaluated using a mixed-methods approach. RESULTS: In total, 55.1% of the Dutch population sample (n = 328) found a financial incentive inappropriate for smoking cessation in pregnant women, while the healthcare professionals and pilot study participants thought the financial-incentive-intervention to be a helpful approach. Eleven vouchers were given during the pilot study, and one woman completed all test points and tested negative for cotinine at the end of the pilot study. CONCLUSION: Although the financial-incentive-intervention appeared to be a promising approach for smoking cessation in pregnant women, the acceptability of the Dutch population and the number of pregnant women able to abstain smoking during this pilot study was low. Despite the limited study population, this study proved the concept of this financial-incentive-intervention to be feasible for implementation in the Netherlands.     Development of an Indoor Location Based Service Test Bed and Geographic Information System with a Wireless Sensor Network

    In order to provide the seamless navigation and positioning services for indoor environments, an indoor location based service (LBS) test bed is developed to integrate the indoor positioning system and the indoor three-dimensional (3D) geographic information system (GIS). A wireless sensor network (WSN) is used in the developed indoor positioning system. Considering the power consumption, in this paper the ZigBee radio is used as the wireless protocol, and the received signal strength (RSS) fingerprinting positioning method is applied as the primary indoor positioning algorithm. The matching processes of the user location include the nearest neighbor (NN) algorithm, the K-weighted nearest neighbors (KWNN) algorithm, and the probabilistic approach. To enhance the positioning accuracy for the dynamic user, the particle filter is used to improve the positioning performance. As part of this research, a 3D indoor GIS is developed to be used with the indoor positioning system. This involved using the computer-aided design (CAD) software and the virtual reality markup language (VRML) to implement a prototype indoor LBS test bed. Thus, a rapid and practical procedure for constructing a 3D indoor GIS is proposed, and this GIS is easy to update and maintenance for users. The building of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan is used as an example to assess the performance of various algorithms for the indoor positioning system

    Prognosis of ductal adenocarcinoma of pancreatic head with overexpression of CD44

    SummaryBackgroundThe long-term survival rate of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is very low. Cancer stem cells have been identified in PDAC based on the expression of the surface markers CD24, CD44, CD133, and epithelial specific antigen. The prognosis of PDAC may be related to the presence or absence of tumor cells with cancer stem cell surface markers.MethodsEighty-six PDAC patients (51 male and 35 female patients) who underwent surgical treatment at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital—Lin-Kou Medical Center, Lin-Kou, Taiwan between 1998 and 2007 were included in this study. The patients' ages ranged from 30 years to 84 years. All their surgical specimens showed invasive ductal cancer. Immunohistochemical staining with CD44 antibodies was performed. The differences in clinical data, cell types of tumors, tumor staging, and survival rates between patients with CD44− (Group A; n = 33) and CD44+ (Group B; n = 53) were compared.ResultsClinical data, cell types of tumors, and tumor staging between the two groups showed no significant differences. The 3- and 5-year survival rates were, respectively, 51.5% and 19.8% in patients with CD44− tumor cells and 4.0% and 2.0% in those with CD44+ tumor cells. The differences were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The median overall survival times of the two groups were also different (36.9 months vs. 12.2 months, p < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis showed that the CD44 as well as lymph node status, and differentiation of tumor cells were prognostic factors for patients with PDAC.ConclusionThe results suggested that CD44 expression in patients with PDAC after surgery was significantly associated with decreased survival, whereas patients with CD44− tumor cells survived significantly longer
