Coherent Population Trapping of Single Spins in Diamond Under Optical Excitation
Coherent population trapping is demonstrated in single nitrogen-vacancy
centers in diamond under optical excitation. For sufficient excitation power,
the fluorescence intensity drops almost to the background level when the laser
modulation frequency matches the 2.88 GHz splitting of the ground states. The
results are well described theoretically by a four-level model, allowing the
relative transition strengths to be determined for individual centers. The
results show that all-optical control of single spins is possible in diamond.Comment: minor correction
Observation of Skewed Electromagnetic Wakefields in an Asymmetric Structure Driven by Flat Electron Bunches
Relativistic charged-particle beams which generate intense longitudinal
fields in accelerating structures also inherently couple to transverse modes.
The effects of this coupling may lead to beam break-up instability, and thus
must be countered to preserve beam quality in applications such as linear
colliders. Beams with highly asymmetric transverse sizes (flat-beams) have been
shown to suppress the initial instability in slab-symmetric structures.
However, as the coupling to transverse modes remains, this solution serves only
to delay instability. In order to understand the hazards of transverse coupling
in such a case, we describe here an experiment characterizing the transverse
effects on a flat-beam, traversing near a planar dielectric lined structure.
The measurements reveal the emergence of a previously unobserved
skew-quadrupole-like interaction when the beam is canted transversely, which is
not present when the flat-beam travels parallel to the dielectric surface. We
deploy a multipole field fitting algorithm to reconstruct the projected
transverse wakefields from the data. We generate the effective kick vector map
using a simple two-particle theoretical model, with particle-in-cell
simulations used to provide further insight for realistic particle
distributions.Comment: Six pages, seven figures. Submitted to Physical Revie
Operational Performance of MOSFIRE with Its Cryogenic Configurable Slitmask Unit at the W. M. Keck Observatory
The Multi-Object Spectrograph for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE) achieved first light on the W. M. Keck Observatory’s Keck I telescope on 4 April 2012 and quickly became the most popular Keck I instrument. One of the primary reasons for the instrument’s popularity is that it uses a configurable slitmask unit developed by the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et Microtechnique (CSEM SA) to isolate the light from up to 46 objects simultaneously. In collaboration with the instrument development team and CSEM engineers, the Keck observatory staff present how MOSFIRE is successfully used, and we identify what contributed to routine and trouble free nighttime operations
Weak Lensing with SDSS Commissioning Data: The Galaxy-Mass Correlation Function To 1/h Mpc
(abridged) We present measurements of galaxy-galaxy lensing from early
commissioning imaging data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We measure
a mean tangential shear around a stacked sample of foreground galaxies in three
bandpasses out to angular radii of 600'', detecting the shear signal at very
high statistical significance. The shear profile is well described by a
power-law. A variety of rigorous tests demonstrate the reality of the
gravitational lensing signal and confirm the uncertainty estimates. We
interpret our results by modeling the mass distributions of the foreground
galaxies as approximately isothermal spheres characterized by a velocity
dispersion and a truncation radius. The velocity dispersion is constrained to
be 150-190 km/s at 95% confidence (145-195 km/s including systematic
uncertainties), consistent with previous determinations but with smaller error
bars. Our detection of shear at large angular radii sets a 95% confidence lower
limit , corresponding to a physical radius of
kpc, implying that galaxy halos extend to very large radii. However, it is
likely that this is being biased high by diffuse matter in the halos of groups
and clusters. We also present a preliminary determination of the galaxy-mass
correlation function finding a correlation length similar to the galaxy
autocorrelation function and consistency with a low matter density universe
with modest bias. The full SDSS will cover an area 44 times larger and provide
spectroscopic redshifts for the foreground galaxies, making it possible to
greatly improve the precision of these constraints, measure additional
parameters such as halo shape, and measure the properties of dark matter halos
separately for many different classes of galaxies.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures, submitted to A
Symbiotic modeling: Linguistic Anthropology and the promise of chiasmus
Reflexive observations and observations of reflexivity: such agendas are by now standard practice in anthropology. Dynamic feedback loops between self and other, cause and effect, represented and representamen may no longer seem surprising; but, in spite of our enhanced awareness, little deliberate attention is devoted to modeling or grounding such phenomena. Attending to both linguistic and extra-linguistic modalities of chiasmus (the X figure), a group of anthropologists has recently embraced this challenge. Applied to contemporary problems in linguistic anthropology, chiasmus functions to highlight and enhance relationships of interdependence or symbiosis between contraries, including anthropology’s four fields, the nature of human being and facets of being human
Associatioin of Plasma Aβ Peptides with Blood Pressure in the Elderly
Background Aß peptides are often considered as catabolic by-products of the amyloid ß protein precursor (APP), with unknown physiological functions. However, several biological properties have been tentatively attributed to these peptides, including a role in vasomotion. We assess whether plasma Aß peptide levels might be associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure values (SBP and DBP, respectively). Methodology/Principal Findings Plasma Aß1-40 and Aß1-42 levels were measured using an xMAP-based assay in 1,972 individuals (none of whom were taking antihypertensive drugs) from 3 independent studies: the French population-based 3C and MONA-LISA (Lille) studies (n = 627 and n = 769, respectively) and the Australian, longitudinal AIBL study (n = 576). In the combined sample, the Aß1-42/ Aß1-40 ratio was significantly and inversely associated with SBP (p = 0.03) and a similar trend was observed for DBP (p = 0.06). Using the median age (69) as a cut-off, the Aß1-42/Aß1-40 ratio was strongly associated with both SBP and DBP in elderly individuals (p = 0.002 and p = 0.03, respectively). Consistently, a high Aß1-42/ Aß1-40 ratio was associated with a lower risk of hypertension in both the combined whole sample (odds ratio [OR], 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56-0.90) and (to an even greater extent) in the elderly subjects (OR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.37–0.75). Lastly, all these associations appeared to be primarily driven by the level of plasma Aß1-40. Conclusion The plasma Aß1-42/Aß1-40 ratio is inversely associated with SBP, DBP and the risk of hypertension in elderly subjects, suggesting that Aß peptides affect blood pressure in vivo. These results may be particularly relevant in Alzheimer\u27s disease, in which a high Aß1-42/Aß1-40 plasma ratio is reportedly associated with a decreased risk of incident disease
Identifying Reduced-Form Relations with Panel Data
The literature that tests for U-shaped relationships using panel data, such as those between pollution and income or inequality and growth, reports widely divergent (parametric and non-parametric) empirical findings. We explain why lack of identification lies at the root of these differences. To deal with this lack of identification, we propose an identification strategy that explicitly distinguishes between what can be identified on the basis of the data and what is a consequence of subjective choices due to a lack of identification. We apply our methodology to the pollution-income relationship of both CO2- and SO2-emissions. Interestingly, our approach yields estimates of both income (scale) and time (composition and/or technology) effects for these reduced-form relationships that are insensitive to the required subjective choices and consistent with theoretical predictions
