    Exploring a cardio-thoracic hospital ward soundscape in relation to restoration

    Hospitals can provide stressful experiences for both patients and medical staff. A well-designed hospital soundscape should avoid adding to negative emotional states (e.g. stress), limit any detrimental cognitive effects (e.g. attentional fatigue), and enable restoration. Experiences of the cardio-thoracic ward soundscape, in a UK public University hospital, were explored via semi-structured interviews with 11 patients and 16 nurses. Thematic coding analysis resulted in 11 key themes including notions of restoration and emotional responses. The themes were used to develop a conceptual model to describe the processes involved in the perception and evaluation of the soundscape. The language used by patients and nurses indicated the emotional response to the soundscape was at times stressful and at others potentially restorative. Coping methods of accepting and habituating to individual sounds were noted. The impact of the patients' and nurses' ability to maintain these coping strategies are discussed in relation to restoration and the temporal variation of the soundscape. A period of 'quiet time' was in operation at the hospital and the importance of this was noted through various responses relating to emotion and restoration. The results suggest the soundscape has potentially, a beneficial role in facilitating restoration thus helping patients' recovery and medical staff's ability to remain productive. This research supports the need to study hospital soundscapes further so that design implications can be considered for the production of a more restorative environment, possibly through the masking/removal of unwanted sounds and optimising positive sounds

    Proposing a conceptual framework to develop the hospital soundscape through visual communication

    Sound level measurement is used to assess sound within any environment, never more so than in hospitals. This is due to the negative effects that high sound level can have on patients and staff. However, other ways of exploring sound and the soundscape within the hospital context have been used: sound art has conveyed the experiences of heart transplant patients. Art may act as juxtaposition to objective sound level measurement but the two fundamentally attempt to depict attributes of the soundscape. Using theory from design and concepts from art a framework is presented for designing a positive soundscape experience. This is not through the addition of sound per se but through creatively communicating the information contained within a soundscape to enable the everyday listener to interpret a cacophony of hospital sounds more positively. In representing visual communication of sound as a design object, a new way to explore sound may exist

    The title compound, C14H5F6NO3, was synthesized by condensation of tetra­fluoro­phthalic anhydride and 2,4-difluoro­aniline. It was then recrystallized from hexane to give a nonmerohedral twin with two crystallographically unique mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit. The refined twin fraction is 0.460 (3). Torsional differences between the aryl rings and the central amide group account for the presence of two unique mol­ecules. The compound packs as double tapes formed by O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter­actions between each unique mol­ecule and its symmetry equivalents

    The impact of the physical environment on depressive symptoms of older residents living in care homes : a mixed methods study

    Background and Objectives: Forty percent of residents living in care homes in the United Kingdom have significant depressive symptoms. Care homes can appear to be depressing places, but whether the physical environment of homes directly affects depression in care home residents is unknown. This study explores the relationship between the physical environment and depressive symptoms of older people living in care homes. Research Design and Methods: In a prospective cohort study the physical environment of 50 care homes were measured using the Sheffield Care Environment Assessment Matrix (SCEAM) and depressive symptoms of 510 residents measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). The study was supplemented with semi-structured interviews with residents living in the care homes. Quantitative data were analyzed using multi-level modeling, and qualitative data analyzed using a thematic framework approach. Results: The overall physical environment of care homes (overall SCEAM score) did not predict depressive symptoms. Controlling for dependency, social engagement, and home type, having access to outdoor space was the only environmental variable to significantly predict depressive symptoms. Residents interviewed reported that access to outdoor space was restricted in many ways: locked doors, uneven foot paths, steep steps, and needing permission or assistance to go outside. Discussion and Implications: We provide new evidence to suggest that access to outdoor space predicts depressive symptoms in older people living in care home. Interventions aimed at increasing access to outdoor spaces could positively affect depressive symptoms in older people

In addition to qualifying this device for space applications by establishing its reliability and evaluating its sensitivity to radiation, screening the programmed devices with Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) and functional burn-in presents an interesting challenge. This paper presents a review of the design, qualification, and screening cycle employed for FPGA designs in a space program, and demonstrates the need for close interaction between design and test engineers

    DJ-1 isoforms in whole blood as potential biomarkers of Parkinson disease

    DJ-1 is a multifunctional protein that plays an important role in oxidative stress, cell death, and synucleinopathies, including Parkinson disease. Previous studies have demonstrated that total DJ-1 levels decrease in the cerebrospinal fluid, but do not change significantly in human plasma from patients with Parkinson disease when compared with controls. In this study, we measured total DJ-1 and its isoforms in whole blood of patients with Parkinson disease at various stages, Alzheimer disease, and healthy controls to identify potential peripheral biomarkers of PD. In an initial discovery study of 119 subjects, 7 DJ-1 isoforms were reliably detected, and blood levels of those with 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal modifications were discovered to be altered in late-stage Parkinson disease. This result was further confirmed in a validation study of another 114 participants, suggesting that, unlike total DJ-1 levels, post-translationally modified isoforms of DJ-1 from whole blood are candidate biomarkers of late-stage Parkinson disease
