    Preparations for the Forbes Expedition, 1758, in Adams County, with Particular Focus on the Reverend Thomas Barton

    In the year 1755, two events occurred which left their impress upon the history of what was to become Adams county. One was momentous, and its consequences, like concentric ripples produced by a stone hurled into a large body of water, continued to move and shape the history of Pennsylvania\u27s frontier long afterwards. By comparison, the other was insignificant, the mere, almost undetectable slipping of a pebble into the rushing torrent of Time. Yet this second happening eventuated in ways that profoundly contributed to our understanding of Adams county\u27s, and Pennsylvania\u27s, history during the years 1755-59. The lesser of these occurrences had its genesis in the religious needs of a people often neglected in accounts of colonial Pennsylvania, the Anglicans (or members of the Church of England) who dwelt along the western frontier and who, as it fell out, were largely Anglo-Irish and Scots-Irish in origin. Numerically fewer than their Presbyterian neighbors clustered to the north in Cumberland county and to the south in the settlements of Marsh Creek, the people of the Church of England had informally staked out an area for themselves along the Conewago and the Bermudian Creeks in Huntington, Tyrone and Reading townships in what was then western York county. A shoal precariously situated in a sea of Presbyterians, Seceders, and Covenanters, and cut off from the nearest Anglican church, St. James\u27s in Lancaster, by the triple geographic barriers of dense forest, broad river, and vast distance, they felt the survival of their religion an uncertain thing indeed.     Reference-State One-Particle Density-Matrix Theory

    A density-matrix formalism is developed based on the one-particle density-matrix of a single-determinantal reference-state. The v-representable problem does not appear in the proposed method, nor the need to introduce functionals defined by a constrained search. The correlation-energy functionals are not universal; they depend on the external potential. Nevertheless, model systems can still be used to derive universal energy-functionals. In addition, the correlation-energy functionals can be partitioned into individual terms that are -- to a varying degree -- universal; yielding, for example, an electron gas approximation. Variational and non-variational energy functionals are introduced that yield the target-state energy when the reference state -- or its corresponding one-particle density matrix -- is constructed from Brueckner orbitals. Using many-body perturbation theory, diagrammatic expansions are given for the non-variational energy-functionals, where the individual diagrams explicitly depend on the one-particle density-matrix. Non-variational energy-functionals yield generalized Hartree--Fock equations involving a non-local correlation-potential and the Hartree--Fock exchange; these equations are obtained by imposing the Brillouin--Brueckner condition. The same equations -- for the most part -- are obtained from variational energy-functionals using functional minimizations, yielding the (kernel of) correlation potential as the functional derivative of correlation-energy functionals.     Information spreading during emergencies and anomalous events

    The most critical time for information to spread is in the aftermath of a serious emergency, crisis, or disaster. Individuals affected by such situations can now turn to an array of communication channels, from mobile phone calls and text messages to social media posts, when alerting social ties. These channels drastically improve the speed of information in a time-sensitive event, and provide extant records of human dynamics during and afterward the event. Retrospective analysis of such anomalous events provides researchers with a class of "found experiments" that may be used to better understand social spreading. In this chapter, we study information spreading due to a number of emergency events, including the Boston Marathon Bombing and a plane crash at a western European airport. We also contrast the different information which may be gleaned by social media data compared with mobile phone data and we estimate the rate of anomalous events in a mobile phone dataset using a proposed anomaly detection method.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figure
