    Hydrothermal activity lowers trophic diversity in Antarctic sedimented hydrothermal vents

    Sedimented hydrothermal vents are those in which hydrothermal fluid vents through sediment and are among the least studied deep-sea ecosystems. We present a combination of microbial and biochemical data to assess trophodynamics between and within hydrothermally active and off-vent areas of the Bransfield Strait (1050–1647 m depth). Microbial composition, biomass and fatty acid signatures varied widely between and within vent and non-vent sites and provided evidence of diverse metabolic activity. Several species showed diverse feeding strategies and occupied different trophic positions in vent and non-vent areas and stable isotope values of consumers were generally not consistent with feeding structure morphology. Niche area and the diversity of microbial fatty acids reflected trends in species diversity and was lowest at the most hydrothermally active site. Faunal utilisation of chemosynthetic activity was relatively limited but was detected at both vent and non-vent sites as evidenced by carbon and sulphur isotopic signatures, suggesting that the hydrothermal activity can affect trophodynamics over a much wider area than previously thought

    On the Perturbative Nature of Color Superconductivity

    Color superconductivity is a possible phase of high density QCD. We present a systematic derivation of the transition temperature, T_C, from the QCD Lagrangian through study of the di-quark proper vertex. With this approach, we confirm the dependence of T_C on the coupling g, namely TCμg5eκ/gT_C \sim \mu g^{-5} e^{-\kappa/g}, previously obtained from the one-gluon exchange approximation in the superconducting phase. The diagrammatic approach we employ allows us to examine the perturbative expansion of the vertex and the propagators. We find an additional O(1) contribution to the prefactor of the exponential from the one-loop quark self energy and that the other one-loop radiative contributions and the two gluon exchange vertex contribution are subleading.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, revtex, details and discussion expande

    Angular Momentum Mixing in Crystalline Color Superconductivity

    In crystalline color superconductivity, quark pairs form at non-zero total momentum. This crystalline order potentially enlarges the domain of color superconductivity in cold dense quark matter. We present a perturbative calculation of the parameters governing the crystalline phase and show that this is indeed the case.     Angular dependence of the bulk nucleation field Hc2 of aligned MgB2 crystallites

    Studies on the new MgB2 superconductor, with a critical temperature Tc ~ 39 K, have evidenced its potential for applications although intense magnetic relaxation effects limit the critical current density, Jc, at high magnetic fields. This means that effective pinning centers must be added into the material microstructure, in order to halt dissipative flux movements. Concerning the basic microscopic mechanism to explain the superconductivity in MgB2, several experimental and theoretical works have pointed to the relevance of a phonon-mediated interaction, in the framework of the BCS theory. Questions have been raised about the relevant phonon modes, and the gap and Fermi surface anisotropies, in an effort to interpret spectroscopic and thermal data that give values between 2.4 and 4.5 for the gap energy ratio. Preliminary results on the anisotropy of Hc2 have shown a ratio, between the in-plane and perpendicular directions, around 1.7 for aligned MgB2 crystallites and 1.8 for epitaxial thin films. Here we show a study on the angular dependence of Hc2 pointing to a Fermi velocity anisotropy around 2.5. This anisotropy certainly implies the use of texturization techniques to optimize Jc in MgB2 wires and other polycrystalline components.Comment: 10 pages + 4 Figs.; Revised version accepted in Phys.     Micro-scale to nano-scale generators for energy harvesting:Self powered piezoelectric, triboelectric and hybrid devices

    This comprehensive review focuses on recent advances in energy harvesting of micro-scale and nano-scale generators based on piezoelectric and triboelectric effects. The development of flexible and hybrid devices for a variety of energy harvesting applications are systematically reviewed. A fundamental understanding of the important parameters that determine the performance of piezoelectric, triboelectric and hybrid devices are summarized. Current research directions being explored and the emerging factors to improve harvester functionality and advance progress in achieving high performance and durable energy conversion are provided. Investigations with regard to integrating flexible matrices and optimizing the composition of the piezoelectric and triboelectric materials are examined to enhance device performance and improve cost-effectiveness for the commercial arena. Finally, future research trends, emerging device structures and novel materials in view of imminent developments and harvesting applications are presented.</p

    Disease-modifying effects of an SCAF4 structural variant in a predominantly SOD1 ALS cohort

    Objective To test the hypothesis that rs573116164 will have disease-modifying effects in patients with superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (fALS), we characterized rs573116164 within a cohort of 190 patients with fALS and 560 healthy age-matched controls to assess the variant for association with various measures of disease. Methods Using a previously described bioinformatics evaluation algorithm, a polymorphic short structural variant associated with SOD1 was identified according to its theoretical effect on gene expression. An 12–18 poly-T repeat (rs573116164) within the 3′ untranslated region of serine and arginine rich proteins-related carboxy terminal domain associated factor 4 (SCAF4), a gene that is adjacent to SOD1, was assessed for disease association and influence on survival and age at onset in an fALS cohort using PCR, Sanger sequencing, and capillary separation techniques for allele detection. Results In a North American cohort of predominantly SOD1 fALS patients (n =190) and age-matched healthy controls (n = 560), we showed that carriage of an 18T SCAF4 allele was associated with disease within this cohort (odds ratio [OR] 6.6; 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.9–11.2; p = 4.0e-11), but also within non-SOD1 cases (n = 27; OR 5.3; 95% CI 1.9–14.5; p = 0.0014). This finding suggests genetically SOD1-independent effects of SCAF4 on fALS susceptibility. Furthermore, carriage of an 18T allele was associated with a 26-month reduction in survival time (95% CI 6.6–40.8; p = 0.014), but did not affect age at onset of disease. Conclusions The findings in this fALS cohort suggest that rs573116164 could have SOD1-independent and broader relevance in ALS, warranting further investigation in other fALS and sporadic ALS cohorts, as well as studies of functional effects of the 18T variant on gene expression
