Rad donosi rezultate terenskog istraživanja u Ljubićevoj pećini kod Marčane u Istri, provedenog u 2019. godini. Tijekom terenskog rada provedeno je lasersko skeniranje dijela lokaliteta te geofizikalna mjerenja gornje etaže pećine. Navedena mjerenja poslužit će u svrhu kvalitetnijeg planiranja budućih sustavnih arheoloÅ”kih istraživanja navedenog lokaliteta. The paper presents the results of fieldwork at Ljubićeva pećina near Marčana in Istria conducted in 2019. During fieldwork, laser scanning of a part of the site, as well as geophysical work in the upper part of the cave, was conducted. This work will provide a better basis for the planning of future systematic archaeological excavations of the site

Vindija Cave and The Modern Human Peopling of Europe

    Get PDF
Vindija cave in Croatia has yielded the youngest securely dated Neandertal skeletal remains in Central/Eastern Europe. In addition, these remains have been found in association with archaeological material exhibiting Upper Paleolithic elements. Due to its geographic location and date, the Vindija remains are particularly crucial for the understanding of initial modern human peopling of Europe and the nature of the Neandertal demise. The significance of archaeological and paleontological finds and hominin fossils from this site is discussed in the light of new finds at Vindija and recent developments in the fields of paleoanthropology and prehistoric archaeology. Furthermore, the impact of revised chronology for several crucial specimens and sites throughout Europe, including Vindija, is discussed

This paper presents the results of archaeological investigation conducted in the course of 2014 and 2015 at four sites in the Lim Channel area in Istria County. The investigation is part of the Croatian Science Foundationā€™s Archaeological Investigations into the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene of the Lim Channel project (ARCHAEOLIM). The fieldwork was conducted at four locations: Romualdā€™s Cave, Abri Kontija 002, Pećina Cave near Rovinjsko Selo and Lim 001. Also conducted in 2015 was an underwater field survey of a part of Lim Channel, geoarchaeological sampling and geophysical measurement

Mesenteric rheumatoid nodules masquerading as an intra-abdominal malignancy: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract

Background

Rheumatoid nodules are the most common extra-articular findings in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. They occur most commonly at pressure points such as the extensor surfaces of the forearms, fingers, and occiput, but have also been reported to occur in unusual locations including the central nervous system, pericardium, pleura, and sclera. We present the unusual case of rheumatoid nodules in the small bowel mesentery masquerading as an intra-abdominal malignancy.

Case presentation

A 65-year-old-male with a known history of longstanding erosive, nodular, seropositive rheumatoid arthritis was incidentally found to have a mesenteric mass on computed tomography (CT) exam of the abdomen. This mass had not been present on prior imaging studies and was worrisome for a malignancy. Attempts at noninvasive biopsy were nondiagnostic but consistent with a "spindle" cell neoplasm. Laparotomy revealed extensive thickening and fibrosis of the small bowel mesentery along with large, firm nodules throughout the mesentery. A limited bowel resection including a large, partially obstructing, nodule was performed. Pathology was consistent with an unusual presentation of rheumatoid nodules in the mesentery of the small bowel.

Conclusion

Rheumatoid nodules should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient who presents with an intra-abdominal mass and a history of rheumatoid arthritis. Currently, no tests or imaging modality can discriminate with sufficient accuracy to rule out a malignancy in this difficult diagnostic delimma. Hopefully, this case will serve as impetus for further study and biomarker discovery to allow for improved diagnostic power.</p

Ivor Janković - dopisni autorThis paper provides the results of the archaeological excavations of Ljubićeva Pećina, a cave site near Marčana in Istria. The excavations were part of the Croatian Science Foundation project called ā€œPrehistoric hunter-gatherers in Isstria and adjacent regions: Patterns of Late Pleistocene lifestyle and mobility (PREHISTRIA)ā€œ, which aims to gain a better insight into the different aspects of life of Late Glacial hunters and gatherers in the area of Istria and put them in a broader temporal and geographical framework. This yearā€™s excavations uncovered archaeological material (pottery, lithic and faunal finds, and human skeletal remains) from different prehistoric periods (Bronze Age, Neolithic, and Paleolithic). Also, samples were taken for radiometric dating, the analysis of sedimentary and ancient DNA, geoarchaeological, archaeobotanical, and raw material analysis, ZooMS, and other kinds of analyses that will provide valuable new data on the past inhabitants of Ljubićeva Pećina. The obtained results will be situated in the geographical and chronological context of the Upper Paleolithic sites of Istria and nearby regions in order to gain a better insight into survival strategies, contact zones, and other parameters with regard to ecological factors and environmental changes.
