Updates from the Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber Group (DMTPC)
The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) collaboration has developed a series of gas-based detectors with the goal of detecting the directional anisotropy of dark-matter-induced nuclear recoils. Here, we report on recent progress from the DMPTC group, focusing on the surface operation of the 4shooter detector
HERBVI - a program for simulation of baryon- and lepton- number violating processes
We describe a Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of baryon- and
lepton-number violating processes at supercolliders. The package, {\HERBVI}, is
designed as a hard-process generator interfacing to the general hadronic event
simulation program {\HW}. In view of the very high multiplicity of gauge bosons
expected in such processes, particular attention is paid to the efficient
generation of multiparticle phase space. The program also takes account of the
expected colour structure of baryon-number violating vertices, which has

AGN effect on cooling flow dynamics
We analyzed the feedback of AGN jets on cooling flow clusters using
three-dimensional AMR hydrodynamic simulations. We studied the interaction of
the jet with the intracluster medium and creation of low X-ray emission
cavities (Bubbles) in cluster plasma. The distribution of energy input by the
jet into the system was quantified in its different forms, i.e. internal,
kinetic and potential. We find that the energy associated with the bubbles, (pV
+ gamma pV/(gamma-1)), accounts for less than 10 percent of the jet energy.Comment: "Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science
Decoherence in trapped ions due to polarization of the residual background gas
We investigate the mechanism of damping and heating of trapped ions
associated with the polarization of the residual background gas induced by the
oscillating ions themselves. Reasoning by analogy with the physics of surface
electrons in liquid helium, we demonstrate that the decay of Rabi oscillations
observed in experiments on 9Be+ can be attributed to the polarization phenomena
investigated here. The measured sensitivity of the damping of Rabi oscillations
with respect to the vibrational quantum number of a trapped ion is also

A study of the centrally produced pi0pi0pi0 channel in pp interactions at 450 GeV/c
The reaction pp -> pf (pi0pi0pi0) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. The
pi0pi0pi0 effective mass spectrum shows clear eta(547) and pi2(1670) signals.
Branching ratios for the eta(547) and pi_2(1670) are given as well as upper
limits for the decays of the omega(782), a1(1260) and a2(1320) into 3pi0.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 4 Figure
Results of Prevention of REStenosis with Tranilast and its Outcomes (PRESTO) trial
BACKGROUND: Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a major problem affecting 15% to 30% of patients after stent placement. No oral agent has shown a beneficial effect on restenosis or on associated major adverse cardiovascular events. In limited trials, the oral agent tranilast has been shown to decrease the frequency of angiographic restenosis after PCI. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of tranilast (300 and 450 mg BID for 1 or 3 months), 11 484 patients were enrolled. Enrollment and drug were initiated within 4 hours after successful PCI of at least 1 vessel. The primary end point was the first occurrence of death, myocardial infarction, or ischemia-driven target vessel revascularization within 9 months and was 15.8% in the placebo group and 15.5% to 16.1% in the tranilast groups (P=0.77 to 0.81). Myocardial infarction was the only component of major adverse cardiovascular events to show some evidence of a reduction with tranilast (450 mg BID for 3 months): 1.1% versus 1.8% with placebo (P=0.061 for intent-to-treat population). The primary reason for not completing treatment was > or =1 hepatic laboratory test abnormality (11.4% versus 0.2% with placebo, P<0.01). In the angiographic substudy composed of 2018 patients, minimal lumen diameter (MLD) was measured by quantitative coronary angiography. At follow-up, MLD was 1.76+/-0.77 mm in the placebo group, which was not different from MLD in the tranilast groups (1.72 to 1.78+/-0.76 to 80 mm, P=0.49 to 0.89). In a subset of these patients (n=1107), intravascular ultrasound was performed at follow-up. Plaque volume was not different between the placebo and tranilast groups (39.3 versus 37.5 to 46.1 mm(3), respectively; P=0.16 to 0.72). CONCLUSIONS: Tranilast does not improve the quantitative measures of restenosis (angiographic and intravascular ultrasound) or its clinical sequelae
Interpersonal dynamics in baseline rallies in tennis
In tennis, the relative positioning of players on court constrains their opportunities to perform successful actions. In this study we proposed and validated an empirical function that captures the spatial-temporal relationship between tennis players during competitive performance. This parameter, termed goal-directed displacement index (GDD Index), is defined over time by the product of both players' distances to the central line of the court and to the centre of the net. Results showed that the GDD index successfully described tennis players' patterns of interaction, as well as identified breaks in patterns of play during competitive performance, due to changes in relative positioning on court. Our analysis revealed two different patterns of interpersonal interactions, cross and down-the-line rallies, and two ways for a break to emerge in game dynamics, parallel variation (transition from a cross court rally to a down-the-line rally) and angle opening (lateral displacement). Data suggest that the elaboration of specific individual profiles of performance for different players, using the GDD index, could improve performance analysis in tennis
Optical mapping compendium of structural variants across global cattle breeds
Structural variants (SV) have been linked to important bovine disease phenotypes, but due to the difficulty of their accurate detection with standard sequencing approaches, their role in shaping important traits across cattle breeds is largely unexplored. Optical mapping is an alternative approach for mapping SVs that has been shown to have higher sensitivity than DNA sequencing approaches. The aim of this project was to use optical mapping to develop a high-quality database of structural variation across cattle breeds from different geographical regions, to enable further study of SVs in cattle. To do this we generated 100X Bionano optical mapping data for 18 cattle of nine different ancestries, three continents and both cattle sub-species. In total we identified 13,457 SVs, of which 1,200 putatively overlap coding regions. This resource provides a high-quality set of optical mapping-based SV calls that can be used across studies, from validating DNA sequencing-based SV calls to prioritising candidate functional variants in genetic association studies and expanding our understanding of the role of SVs in cattle evolution
Quantum Tomography under Prior Information
We provide a detailed analysis of the question: how many measurement settings
or outcomes are needed in order to identify a quantum system which is
constrained by prior information? We show that if the prior information
restricts the system to a set of lower dimensionality, then topological
obstructions can increase the required number of outcomes by a factor of two
over the number of real parameters needed to characterize the system.
Conversely, we show that almost every measurement becomes informationally
complete with respect to the constrained set if the number of outcomes exceeds
twice the Minkowski dimension of the set. We apply the obtained results to
determine the minimal number of outcomes of measurements which are
informationally complete with respect to states with rank constraints. In
particular, we show that 4d-4 measurement outcomes (POVM elements) is enough in
order to identify all pure states in a d-dimensional Hilbert space, and that
the minimal number is at most 2 log_2(d) smaller than this upper bound.Comment: v3: There was a mistake in the derived finer upper bound in Theorem

Biosignatures from Earth-Like Planets Around M Dwarfs
Coupled one-dimensional photochemical-climate calculations have been
performed for hypothetical Earth-like planets around M dwarfs. Visible,
near-infrared and thermal-infrared synthetic spectra of these planets were
generated to determine which biosignature gases might be observed by a future,
space-based telescope. Our star sample included two observed active M dwarfs,
AD Leo and GJ 643, and three quiescent model stars. The spectral distribution
of these stars in the ultraviolet generates a different photochemistry on these
planets. As a result, the biogenic gases CH4, N2O, and CH3Cl have substantially
longer lifetimes and higher mixing ratios than on Earth, making them
potentially observable by space-based telescopes. On the active M-star planets,
an ozone layer similar to Earth's was developed that resulted in a
spectroscopic signature comparable to the terrestrial one. The simultaneous
detection of O2 (or O3) and a reduced gas in a planet's atmosphere has been
suggested as strong evidence for life. Planets circling M stars may be good
