A journey of over 200 years: early studies on wootz ingots and new evidence from Konasamudram, India
Recent new evidence emerged from the crucible steel production site of Konasamudram, Telangana, India. A hoard of 60 crucible steel ingots from this site offers a unique opportunity to study details of the early large-scale production of this fabled material, beginning with a detailed documentation of the weights and sizes of 45 of them. Historically, Konasamudram has been an important pre-modern crucible steel manufacturing and trading centre in India, as reported by Persian and European travelogues, and may have been the source of many of the early ingots studied during the past 200 years. Therefore, the aim of this work is to present a dimensional analysis of these ingots and interpret the data in the context of earlier studies, to address questions of consistency in manufacturing, standardization of weights and other physical attributes. The newly-discovered ingots show considerable uniformity in shape, size and weights, indicative of a single event production during the heydays of crucible steel making, while the ingots previously reported in the literature vary much more widely
Impact of antiretroviral therapy on household economics: Findings from Mombasa, Kenya
While the clinical impact of receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) on individuals living with HIV is well documented, less is known about how the receipt of ART affects household economics. This analysis examined the direct and indirect effects of receiving ART on household economics. A direct effect is reduced spending on health services as a result of the improved health status of the household member on ART. The potential indirect effects include increased labor-force participation by the household member on ART, a change in how other household members spend their time (working or in school), and a shift in composition of household expenditures. This brief describes the experiences of a cohort of people living with HIV who were receiving ART through a program coordinated by the Coast Provincial General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya. A longitudinal study of clients on ART found that perceived health improved, reported incidence of illness and use of health services declined, and labor-force participation increased within 12 months of initiating therapy
On the impact of microcredit: Evidence from a randomized intervention in rural Ethiopia
We use data from a randomized controlled trial conducted in 2003-2006 in rural Amhara and
Oromiya (Ethiopia) to study the impacts of the introduction of microfinance in treated communities.
We document that borrowing increased substantially in locations where the programs
started their operations, but we find mixed evidence of improvements in a number of
socio-economic outcomes, including income from agriculture, animal husbandry, non-farm self-employment,
schooling and indicators of women's empowerment
