Ex-ante measure of patent quality reveals intrinsic fitness for citation-network growth
We have constructed a fitness parameter, characterizing the intrinsic
attractiveness for patents to be cited, from attributes of the associated
inventions known at the time a patent is granted. This exogenously obtained
fitness is shown to determine the temporal growth of the citation network in
conjunction with mechanisms of preferential attachment and obsolescence-induced
ageing that operate without reference to characteristics of individual patents.
Our study opens a window on understanding quantitatively the interplay of the
rich-gets-richer and fit-gets-richer paradigms that have been suggested to

Unraveling the dynamics of growth, aging and inflation for citations to scientific articles from specific research fields
We analyze the time evolution of citations acquired by articles from journals
of the American Physical Society (PRA, PRB, PRC, PRD, PRE and PRL). The
observed change over time in the number of papers published in each journal is
considered an exogenously caused variation in citability that is accounted for
by a normalization. The appropriately inflation-adjusted citation rates are
found to be separable into a preferential-attachment-type growth kernel and a
purely obsolescence-related (i.e., monotonously decreasing as a function of
time since publication) aging function. Variations in the empirically extracted
parameters of the growth kernels and aging functions associated with different
journals point to research-field-specific characteristics of citation intensity
and knowledge flow. Comparison with analogous results for the citation dynamics
of technology-disaggregated cohorts of patents provides deeper insight into the

The nonperturbative origin of delta-function singularity in the chirally-odd twist-3 distribution function e(x)
We analytically prove that the existence of the delta-function singularity in
the chirally-odd twist-3 distribution of the nucleon is inseparably
connected with the nonvanishing quark condensate as a signal of the spontaneous
chiral symmetry breaking of the QCD vacuum. This singularity in , which
would be observed as a sizable violation of the 1st moment sum rule, is then
interpreted as giving a very rare case that the nontrivial vacuum structure of
QCD manifests in an observable of a localized QCD excitation, i.e. the nucleon.Comment: 9 pages, 1 eps-figur
Excited scalar mesons in a chiral quark model
First radial excitations of the isoscalar and isovector scalar mesons
f_0(400-1200), f_0(980) and a_0(980) are investigated in the framework of a
nonlocal version of a chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type. It is
shown that f_0(1370), f_J(1710) and a_0(1450) are the first radially excited
states of f_0(400-1200), f_0(980) and a_0(980) which are ground states of the
scalar meson nonet. The mesons' masses and strong decay widths are calculated.
The scalar resonance f_0(1500) is supposed to be a glueball. The status of

Evidence of vorticity and shear at large angular scales in the WMAP data: a violation of cosmological isotropy?
Motivated by the large-scale asymmetry observed in the cosmic microwave
background sky, we consider a specific class of anisotropic cosmological models
-- Bianchi type VII_h -- and compare them to the WMAP first-year data on large
angular scales. Remarkably, we find evidence of a correlation which is ruled
out as a chance alignment at the 3sigma level. The best fit Bianchi model
corresponds to x=0.55, Omega_0=0.5, a rotation axis in the direction
(l,b)=(222degr,-62degr), shear (sigma/H)_0=2.4e-10 and a right--handed
vorticity (omega/H)_0=6.1e-10. Correcting for this component greatly reduces
the significance of the large-scale power asymmetry, resolves several anomalies
detected on large angular scales (ie. the low quadrupole amplitude and
quadrupole/octopole planarity and alignment), and can account for a
non--Gaussian "cold spot" on the sky. Despite the apparent inconsistency with
the best-fit parameters required in inflationary models to account for the
acoustic peaks, we consider the results sufficiently provocative to merit

The dusty torus in the Circinus galaxy: a dense disk and the torus funnel
(Abridged) With infrared interferometry it is possible to resolve the nuclear
dust distributions that are commonly associated with the dusty torus in active
galactic nuclei (AGN). The Circinus galaxy hosts the closest Seyfert 2 nucleus
and previous interferometric observations have shown that its nuclear dust
emission is well resolved.
To better constrain the dust morphology in this active nucleus, extensive new
observations were carried out with MIDI at the Very Large Telescope
Interferometer.
The emission is distributed in two distinct components: a disk-like emission
component with a size of ~ 0.2 1.1 pc and an extended component with a
size of ~ 0.8 1.9 pc. The disk-like component is elongated along PA ~
46{\deg} and oriented perpendicular to the ionisation cone and outflow. The
extended component is elongated along PA ~ 107{\deg}, roughly perpendicular to
the disk component and thus in polar direction. It is interpreted as emission
from the inner funnel of an extended dust distribution and shows a strong
increase in the extinction towards the south-east. We find no evidence of an
increase in the temperature of the dust towards the centre. From this we infer
that most of the near-infrared emission probably comes from parsec scales as
well. We further argue that the disk component alone is not sufficient to
provide the necessary obscuration and collimation of the ionising radiation and
outflow. The material responsible for this must instead be located on scales of
~ 1 pc, surrounding the disk.
The clear separation of the dust emission into a disk-like emitter and a
polar elongated source will require an adaptation of our current understanding
of the dust emission in AGN. The lack of any evidence of an increase in the
dust temperature towards the centre poses a challenge for the picture of a

Novel Quark Fragmentation Functions and the Nucleon's Transversity Distribution
We define twist-two and twist-three quark fragmentation functions in Quantum
Chromodynamics (QCD) and study their physical implications. Using this
formalism we show how the nucleon's transversity distribution can be measured
