    A PWM/PFM Dual-Mode DC-DC Buck Converter with Load-Dependent Efficiency-Controllable Scheme for Multi-Purpose IoT Applications

    This paper presents a dual-mode DC-DC buck converter including a load-dependent, efficiency-controllable scheme to support multi-purpose IoT applications. For light-load applications, a selectable adaptive on-time pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control is proposed to achieve optimum power efficiency by selecting the optimum switching frequency according to the load current, thereby reducing unnecessary switching losses. When the inductor peak current value or converter output voltage ripple are considered in some applications, its on-time can be adjusted further. In heavy-load applications, a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme is adopted, and its gate driver is structured to reduce dynamic current, preventing the current from shooting through the power switch. A proposed dual-mode buck converter prototype is fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS process, achieving its measured maximum efficiency of 95.7% and power density of 0.83 W/mm(2)

    Lost Dental Bridges During ICU Stay

    Oral care is easily neglected in patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) because they are often intubated or have altered mental status. Although care workers pay careful attention to the mouth, tooth loss often occurs in the ICU. Here we report 3 cases of dental bridge loss undetected by the ICU staff. One patient was under mechanical ventilation via an endotracheal tube after emergency intubation, whilst 2 patients were drowsy but not intubated. Consecutive chest X-rays revealed dental bridge loss in all 3 cases, but this was not identified immediately. Along with other critical management approaches, these cases demonstrate how an initial evaluation of the oral cavity, with special attention to the number of teeth, and the existence of dental prosthetics is essential to preventing potential deleterious complications. The number of teeth and the existence of dental prosthetics must be documented in ICU patients

    Nuclear structure in Parity Doublet Model

    Using an extended parity doublet model with the hidden local symmetry, we study the properties of nuclei in the mean field approximation to see if the parity doublet model could reproduce nuclear properties and also to estimate the value of the chiral invariant nucleon mass m0m_0 preferred by nuclear structure. We first determined our model parameters using the inputs from free space and from nuclear matter properties. Then, we study some basic nuclear properties such as the nuclear binding energy with several different choices of the chiral invariant mass. We observe that our results, especially the nuclear binding energy, approach the experimental values as m0m_0 is increased until m0=700m_0=700 MeV and start to deviate more from the experiments afterwards with m0m_0 larger than m0=700m_0=700 MeV, which may imply that m0=700m_0=700 MeV is preferred by some nuclear properties.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Antioxidant effect of lidocaine and procaine on reactive oxygen species-induced endothelial dysfunction in the rabbit abdominal aorta

    Background: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce lipid peroxidation and tissue damage in the endothelium. We tested the antioxidant effect of lidocaine and procaine on ROS-induced endothelial damage in the rabbit aorta. Methods: Aortic rings isolated from rabbits were suspended in an organ bath filled with Krebs-Henseleit (K-H) solution bubbled with 5% CO2 and 95% O 2 at 37.5??C. After precontraction with phenylephrine (PE, 10 -6 M), changes in tension were recorded following a cumulative administration of acetylcholine (ACh 3 ?? 10-8 to 10 -6 M). Differences were measured as percentages of ACh-induced relaxation of aortic rings before and after exposure to ROS as generated by electrolysis of the K-H solution. The aortic rings were pretreated with lidocaine or procaine (10-5 M to 3 ?? 10-3 M) to compare their effects, as well as ROS scavengers, catalase, mannitol, sodium salicylate, and deferoxamine, and a catalase inhibitor, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3AT). Results: Lidocaine and procaine dose-dependently maintained endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by ACh despite ROS activity (P < 0.05 vs control value). The 3AT pretreated procaine (3 ?? 10-3 M) group decreased more significantly than the un-pretreated procaine group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggest that lidocaine and procaine dose-dependently preserve endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation against ROS attack, potentially via hydrogen peroxide scavenging.     New microbial ecosystem created by artificak floating island

    To scrutinize the microbial ecosystem and processing of water quality improvement under the artificial floating island, water quality parameteres, bacterial numbers and extracellular enzyme activities were measured biweekly flom 3, November 2001 to 20,April 2002 in Lake Paldang, Korea. Most of the mean encironmental parameters were not different from artificially floating island (AFI) site and control site. But,zooplankton numbers were about 100 times higher at AFI site than those of control site, even though the chlorophyll α concentrations were not so different. During winter, the rations of respiratory active bacteria to total bacterial number were two fold higher and enzyme activities of β-glucosidase and phosphatase were extremely higher at AFI site than those of contrl site. With these high densities of zooplankton, active bacteria and high rates of degradation under the AFI, the organic materials are eliminated at inside of lake with newly created ecosystem.Article信州大学山地水環境教育研究センター研究報告 2: 5-9(2004)departmental bulletin pape
