    Online content providers who use the Internet to distribute content experience an extremely competitive business environment. To survive in this environment, they have started charging a fee for the content that they provide. However, there have been very few success stories in commercializing online content. Although one of few success stories is the online game, it still has customers’ psychological resistance against paying a high fee for playing games. To pay back their high R&D or development costs quickly, many online game producers have a tendency to assign high prices to their online games. Without examining customers’ perceived prices for online games, many online game producers have tended to decide prices from their perspectives. Although many online game-related research works have focused on psychological and technical aspects, very few works have examined online gamers’ preferences carefully.     Association of factor XIII Val34Leu polymorphism and coronary artery disease: A meta-analysis

    Background: Factor XIII plays an important role in the stabilization of the linkage between fibrins and in the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease (CAD). The association between factor XIII Val34Leu polymorphism and CAD risk remains controversial. Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis of 36 studies involving 26,940 cases and 34,694 controls. Subgroup analyses were performed with division of data into disease (myocardial infarction [MI], CAD without MI), age, and sex. Results: Factor XIII Val34Leu polymorphism was significantly associated with ove all CAD risk (odds ratio [OR] = 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03–1.06, p = 0.004) and MI risk (OR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.07–1.25, p = 0.0003), but not with CAD without MI risk (OR = 1.00, 95% CI 0.87–1.15, p = 0.96). In the subgroup analysis by age and sex, there was no association between Val34Leu polymorphism and CAD. Conclusions: This meta-analysis found that factor XIII Val34Leu polymorphism was associated with CAD risk, especially MI, but not with CAD without MI. In addition, age and sex did not affect the relationship between factor XIII Val34Leu polymorphism and CAD risk.

    Effect of data normalization on fuzzy clustering of DNA microarray data

    BACKGROUND: Microarray technology has made it possible to simultaneously measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes in a short time. Gene expression data is information rich; however, extensive data mining is required to identify the patterns that characterize the underlying mechanisms of action. Clustering is an important tool for finding groups of genes with similar expression patterns in microarray data analysis. However, hard clustering methods, which assign each gene exactly to one cluster, are poorly suited to the analysis of microarray datasets because in such datasets the clusters of genes frequently overlap. RESULTS: In this study we applied the fuzzy partitional clustering method known as Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) to overcome the limitations of hard clustering. To identify the effect of data normalization, we used three normalization methods, the two common scale and location transformations and Lowess normalization methods, to normalize three microarray datasets and three simulated datasets. First we determined the optimal parameters for FCM clustering. We found that the optimal fuzzification parameter in the FCM analysis of a microarray dataset depended on the normalization method applied to the dataset during preprocessing. We additionally evaluated the effect of normalization of noisy datasets on the results obtained when hard clustering or FCM clustering was applied to those datasets. The effects of normalization were evaluated using both simulated datasets and microarray datasets. A comparative analysis showed that the clustering results depended on the normalization method used and the noisiness of the data. In particular, the selection of the fuzzification parameter value for the FCM method was sensitive to the normalization method used for datasets with large variations across samples. CONCLUSION: Lowess normalization is more robust for clustering of genes from general microarray data than the two common scale and location adjustment methods when samples have varying expression patterns or are noisy. In particular, the FCM method slightly outperformed the hard clustering methods when the expression patterns of genes overlapped and was advantageous in finding co-regulated genes. Thus, the FCM approach offers a convenient method for finding subsets of genes that are strongly associated to a given cluster

    Emergence of robust 2D skyrmions in SrRuO3 ultrathin film without the capping layer

    Magnetic skyrmions have fast evolved from a novelty, as a realization of topologically protected structure with particle-like character, into a promising platform for new types of magnetic storage. Significant engineering progress was achieved with the synthesis of compounds hosting room-temperature skyrmions in magnetic heterostructures, with the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) conducive to the skyrmion formation. Here we report findings of ultrathin skyrmion formation in a few layers of SrRuO3 grown on SrTiO3 substrate without the heavy-metal capping layer. Measurement of the topological Hall effect (THE) reveals a robust stability of skyrmions in this platform, judging from the high value of the critical field 1.57 Tesla (T) at low temperature. THE survives as the field is tilted by as much as 85 degrees at 10 Kelvin, with the in-plane magnetic field reaching up to 6.5 T. Coherent Bragg Rod Analysis, or COBRA for short, on the same film proves the rumpling of the Ru-O plane to be the source of inversion symmetry breaking and DMI. First-principles calculations based on the structure obtained from COBRA find significant magnetic anisotropy in the SrRuO3 film to be the main source of skyrmion robustness. These features promise a few-layer SRO to be an important new platform for skyrmionics, without the necessity of introducing the capping layer to boost the spin-orbit coupling strength artificially.Comment: Supplementary Information available upon reques

    Risk stratification of symptomatic brain metastases by clinical and FDG PET parameters for selective use of prophylactic cranial irradiation in patients with extensive disease of small cell lung cancer

    Purpose: To identify risk factors for developing symptomatic brain metastases and evaluate the impact of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) on brain metastasis-free survival (BMFS) and overall survival (OS) in extensive disease small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC). Materials and methods: Among 190 patients diagnosed with ED-SCLC who underwent FDG PET/CT and brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) prior to treatment, 53 (27.9%) received PCI while 137 (72.1%) did not. Prognostic index predicting a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases was calculated for the group without receiving PCI (observation group, n = 137) with Cox regression model. Results: Median follow-up time was 10.6 months. Multivariate Cox regression showed that the following three factors were associated with a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases: the presence of extrathoracic metastases (p = 0.004), hypermetabolism of bone marrow or spleen on FDG PET (p < 0.001), and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.018). PCI significantly improved BMFS in high-risk patients (1-year rate: 94.7% vs. 62.1%, p = 0.001), but not in low-risk patients (1-year rate: 100.0% vs. 87.7%, p = 0.943). However, PCI did not improve OS in patients at high risk for symptomatic brain metastases (1-year rate: 65.2% vs. 50.0%, p = 0.123). Conclusion: Three prognostic factors (the presence of extrathoracic metastases, hypermetabolism of bone marrow or spleen on FDG PET, and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) were associated with a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases in ED-SCLC. PCI was beneficial for patients at a high risk of symptomatic brain metastases in terms of BMFS, but not OS. Thus, selective use of PCI in ED-SCLC according to the risk stratification is recommended.
