Quantum-based Mechanical Force Realization in Pico-Newton Range

We propose mechanical force realization based on flux quantization in the pico-Newton range. By controlling the number of flux quantum in a superconducting annulus, a force can be created as integer multiples of a constant step. For a 50 nm-thick Nb annulus with the inner and outer radii of 5 μ\mum and 10 μ\mum, respectively, and the field gradient of 10 T/m the force step is estimated to be 184 fN. The stability against thermal fluctuations is also addressed.Comment: 5 pages; 4 figure

The purpose of the paper is to present a new iteration method for finding a common element for the set of solutions of equilibrium problems and of operator equations with a finite family of λi-inverse-strongly monotone mappings in Hilbert spaces

Preventing State-Led Cyberattacks Using the Bright Internet and Internet Peace Principles

The Internet has engendered serious cybersecurity problems due to its anonymity, transnationality, and technical shortcomings. This paper addresses state-led cyberattacks (SLCAs) as a particular source of threats. Recently, the concept of the Bright Internet was proposed as a means of shifting the cybersecurity paradigm from self-defensive protection to the preventive identification of malevolent origins through adopting five cohesive principles. To design a preventive solution against SLCAs, we distinguish the nature of SLCAs from that of private-led cyberattacks (PLCAs). We then analyze what can and cannot be prevented according to the principles of the Bright Internet. For this research, we collected seven typical SLCA cases and selected three illustrative PLCA cases with eleven factors. Our analysis demonstrated that Bright Internet principles alone are insufficient for preventing threats from the cyberterror of noncompliant countries. Thus, we propose a complementary measure referred to here as the Internet Peace Principles, which define that the Internet should be used only for peaceful purposes in accordance with international laws and norms. We derive these principles using an approach that combines the extension of physical conventions to cyberspace, the expansion of international cybersecurity conventions to global member countries, and analogical international norms. Based on this framework, we adopt the Charter of the United Nations, the Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts, Recommendations by the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts, the Tallinn Manual, and Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and others as reference norms that we use to derive the consistent international order embodied by the Internet Peace Principles

Fracture of a Tempofilter II: an Initial Case Report

Tempofilter II is a device that is used for pulmonary embolism prophylaxis. Since the appearance of the Tempofilter II following withdrawal of the Tempofilter I, it has been reported that the Tempofilter II is safe, effective and useful. Here we report on the first case of a fracture of one leg of the filter and this leg was embedded in the inferior vena cava wall in a 62-year-old man with deep vein thrombosis

One-dimensional broadband phononic crystal filter with unit cells made of two non-uniform impedance-mirrored elements

    Get PDF
A one-dimensional finite-sized phononic crystal(PC) made of a specially-configured unit cell is proposed to realize broad bandpass, high-performance filtering. The unit cell is specially-configured with two elements having mirrored impedance distributions of each other. One element has a non-uniform impedance distribution that is so engineered as to maximize wave transmission in the pass band and to minimize transmission in the adjacent stop band while the other, exactly the mirrored distribution. The mirroring approach naturally yields the overall impedance contrast within the resulting unit cell, necessary to form stop bands in a PC of the unit cells. More importantly, the good transmission performance of the orginally-engineered element can be preserved by the approach because no additional impedance mismatch is introduced along the interface of the two impedance-mirrored elements. Extraordinary performance of the PC filter made of the proposed unit cell, such as high transmission, large bandwidth and sharp roll-off, is demonstrated by using one-dimensional longitudinal elastic wave problems. Usefulness of Bone Metabolic Markers in the Diagnosis of Bone Metastasis from Lung Cancer

    Get PDF
Bone metastasis is common in lung cancer patient and the diagnosis of bone metastasis is usually made by using imaging techniques, especially bone scintigraphy. However, the diagnostic yield from bone scintigraphy is limited. The aim of this study is to assess the clinical usefulness of urinary pyridinoline cross-linked N-telopeptides of Type I collagen (NTx), urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD), and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the assessment of bone metastasis in patients with lung cancer. Urinary NTx, DPD, and serum ALP were measured in 151 lung cancer patients (33 with and 118 without bone metastasis). Lung cancer patients with bone metastasis had a higher urinary excretion of NTx and DPD, and a higher serum ALP than those without bone metastasis. NTx had a better receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve than DPD and ALP, since the areas under the ROC curve were 0.82, 0.79, and 0.71, respectively. Although correlation coefficients among NTx, DPD and ALP were significantly positive (p < 0.005), the strongest relationship was appeared between NTx and DPD (R=0.616). In conclusion, our results showed the utility of the new bone markers in detecting bone metastasis and suggested that measurement of urinary NTx was valid diagnostic method of bone metastasis from lung cancer
