Black hole quasinormal mode spectroscopy with LISA

The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for black hole quasinormal mode sources of low-frequency gravitational waves is estimated using a Monte Carlo approach that replaces the all-sky average approximation. We consider an eleven dimensional parameter space that includes both source and detector parameters. We find that in the black-hole mass range Māˆ¼4M\sim 4-7Ɨ106MāŠ™7\times 10^6M_{\odot} the SNR is significantly higher than the SNR for the all-sky average case, as a result of the variation of the spin parameter of the sources. This increased SNR may translate to a higher event rate for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We also study the directional dependence of the SNR, show at which directions in the sky LISA will have greater response, and identify the LISA blind spots.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Women health is always at risk due to her socio economic secondary status in Indian society. External opening of her reproductive system is surrounded by the infection prone zones like anal and urethral openings. Also her involvement in reproductive and sexual acts leads to many infectious disease. This entire course along with many anatomical deformities results in various pathophysiological conditions of reproductive system affecting her health. Such conditions are called as Yonivyapad i.e. diseases of female reproductive system in Ayurved texts. Puberty, menarche, sexually active and reproductive period, antenatal period, perpurium, use of various contraceptive aids, menopausal time and various gynaecological diseases are common events of her life. Twenty Yonivyapada are described by all major Ayurved Sanhita. Causes for many of them are local factors and rest are due to complications of major systemic illness. Doshas are major causative factor in yonivyapada. Various local remedies called as Sthanik Chikitsa are available which can give relief at most extent in certain Yonivyapda. Local modalities like Basti, Uttarbasti, Varti, Kalka Dharan, Kshar Pratisaran, Yoni Dhupan, Sek, Abhyang, Pichu, and Yonidhavan are much effective than any modern remedies. But these therapies are practised at institutional levels only. They are not even popular in upcoming generation of Ayurved practitioners. Promotion of these therapies at small set ups is essential to establish good clinical outcome in the management of gynaecological disorders by Ayurved therapy. Their simple techniques, importance, efficacy and cost effectiveness are more favourable aspects to implement them conveniently. Wide use and large scale acceptance can result into implementation of Sthanic chikitsa in the government public health centres in future

Aims: The occurrence of AIDS in 1980s posed difficult problems for haemophilia clinicians worldwide. The impact of these events is substantial, and the events continue to be subject to judicial proceedings and publications. The stance of haemophilia physicians, particularly their professional resilience, is of importance and remains unexamined. / Methods: Deploying oral histories informed by literature review of scientific publications and past inquiry reports, this qualitative study addresses how physicians continued to work in haemophilia during those years and attributes that contributed to their resilience. / Results and conclusions: Experience and role in laboratory aspects were of value in handling and communicating uncertainty. Collegiality, peer support and scholarship were important in sustaining their roles, in clinical decisionā€making and reā€instating confidence in the therapeutic relationship during the toughest years of their practice

The design and maintenance of an aero-engine generates a significant amount of documentation. When designing new engines, engineers must obtain knowledge gained from maintenance of existing engines to identify possible areas of concern. Firstly, this paper investigate the use of advanced business intelligence tenchniques to solve the problem of knowledge transfer from maintenance to design of aeroengines. Based on data availability and quality, various models were deployed. An association model was used to uncover hidden trends among parts involved in maintenance events. Classification techniques comprising of various algorithms was employed to determine severity of events. Causes of high severity events that lead to major financial loss was traced with the help of summarization techniques. Secondly this paper compares and evaluates the business intelligence approach to solve the problem of knowledge transfer with solutions available from the Semantic Web. The results obtained provide a compelling need to have data mining support on RDF/OWL-based warehoused data

Concrete Mix Design Using Particle Packing Method: Literature Review, Analysis, and Computation

    Get PDF
Particle packing technology is used to reduce the amount of cement in concrete by optimizing the concrete mix, resulting in more sustainable concrete. In this study, four different methods were used to determine the distribution of the mixture presented; packing density method, packing density method, IS code method, and packing density method. In the packing density method, the paste content that exceeds the voids will increase along with the increase in the quality of the concrete. In cases of packing density, the cement-water ratio decreases with the quality of the concrete. In the packing of too many trials, trials and tribulations should be carried out to achieve the ratio of water-cement and paste content for a certain grade of concrete. This correlation curve helps reduce the experiments involved in determining the ratio of semen and paste content for a given concrete quality. The water and cement contents for the packing density and the IS code method are almost the same for each particular concrete class. The workability of concrete achieved was more in the packing density method than the IS code method for the same concrete quality, because the water-cement ratio was slightly higher in the packing density method than the IS code method. The required fine aggregate particles are more in terms of packing density method compared to the IS code method. Therefore, more water and cement are required in terms of packing density. The correlation curve can be used to determine the ratio of water-cement and paste the content that exceeds the voids for a certain concrete qualit

EFFECT OF FLUBENDIAMIDE ON MORPHOLOGY, AVOIDANCE BEHAVIOUR AND ACETYLCHOLINESTERASE ACTIVITY IN EARTHWORM EUDRILUS EUGENIAE

Objective: Flubendiamide is extensively used in agriculture practices as foliar application pesticide. Due to long persistency in the soil, flubendiamide pose serious health concern in non-target organisms. Our main objective was to examine flubendiamide impact on burrowing animal Eudrilus eugeniae with special emphasis on avoidance behaviour and neurotoxicity. Methods: Acute toxicity study of flubendiamide (Diamide pesticide) was conducted on earthworm, Eudrilus eugeniae through direct paper contact method and artificial soil method. Median lethal concentration (LC50) of flubendiamide was calculated by following probit analysis. The neurotoxic potential of flubendiamide was studied with marker enzyme Acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) levels in both In vivo and In vitro experiments. Results: LC50 in earthworms was found to be 94.4 ƂĀµg cm-2 at 48h paper contact test and 332.21 mg kg-1and 238.31 mg kg-1 respectively at 7 and 14 d artificial soil exposure. Morphological and physiological alterations in earthworms attribute to inhibition of AChE levels. The kinetic study of AChE activity in presence and absence of inhibitor suggests the enzyme reaction is competitive in nature. Conclusion: Present study establishes concentration-dependent flubendiamide toxicity in earthworm E. eugeniae. No clear conclusive remarks were made on earthworm avoidance behaviour as the worms were located both in toxic and control soil after 48h of exposure. Further studies may be needed in this aspect to establish clear understanding on avoidance nature of E. eugeniae in different soil types.Ƃ

How coloniality shapes the making of Latin American psychologists: ethnographic evidence from Ecuador

    Get PDF
This paper provides ethnographic evidence on how coloniality shapes the making of Latin American psychologists. A critical ethnography was conducted at a psychology training institution in Ecuador, consisting of twelve months of participant observation; forty-one semi-structured interviews; and analysis of academic discourse, photos, videos and relevant social media content. The research was guided by the tradition of Critical Psychology ā€“ specifically Liberation Psychology ā€“ and Critical Discourse Analysis. Findings suggest the pervasiveness of coloniality in the making of Ecuadorian psychologists and, hypothetically, of others in Latin America and the wider Global South. Interpretations also highlight the non-essentialist, non-dichotomist, ā€˜messyā€™ nature of such processes, a consideration which may advance current ethical and analytical debates on decolonisation. Echoing ongoing critical arguments, authors suggest that a ā€˜help-as-warā€™ metaphor is a category with potential value to contribute to such advancement, an approach that has important theoretical and pragmatic implications for researchers and practitioners

History, Violence and Collective Memory: Implications for Mental Health in Ecuador

    Get PDF
National histories of violence shape experiences of suffering and professional responses. In Ecuador, mental health literature addressing this crucial issue is scarce and little debated. In contrast, local psychiatrists and psychologists within the country face contemporary challenges that are deeply rooted in a violent colonial past and the perpetuation of its fundamental ethos. This paper critically reviews relevant literature on collective memory and historical trauma, and focuses on Ecuador as a case study on how to incorporate history into modern mental health challenges. The discussion poses key questions and outlines possible ways for Ecuador to address the link between history and mental health, including insights from countries that have struggled with their violent pasts. This paper contributes to ongoing international debate on the role of cultural history in mental health with implications for social scientists and practising clinicians in former colonised nations
