    Adolescents' contraception continuation in Switzerland: a prospective observational study.

    Securing the adherence over time to contraception by adolescent girls is a challenge. Until now little was known about this topic in Switzerland. The aim of our study was to determine contraceptive continuation rates among adolescents in this country and assess possible predictive factors for discontinuation. A prospective observational cohort study of 12- to 19-year-old girls starting contraception was performed. Patients were interviewed again after 1 year by phone, email or postal mail. A total of 204 patients were included, of whom 85.8% chose a combined oestrogen-progestogen pill. The answer rate 1 year later was 71%. Among these, continuation of the initially prescribed contraceptive method was observed in 73.1%. Factors statistically affecting the continuation rate were the initial contraceptive method, the place of residence and sexual activity after 1 year. Classification of contraceptive methods in decreasing order of continuation rate was the following: long acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods, oestrogen-progestogen pills, injections, progestogen pills, patches and rings. Major reasons reported for stopping the prescribed contraceptive method were ending sexual relations (54.3%), developing side effects (34.3%) or changing to another contraceptive method (22.9%). Neither age, nationality, smoking, occupation, nor the legal representative's knowledge of the contraception influenced adherence. Contraceptive continuation rate was high among the adolescent population studied. The only predictive factor of discontinuation was the contraceptive method. Our study also reveals that respecting teenagers' confidentiality is essential as it does not negatively impact the continuation rate.     Using vocational education to support development solutions in the Pacific: An emphasis on climate change and health

    In this article, author(s) reported on the results of the EU PacTVET project, which explored the use of TVET to support resilience in the region with an emphasis on climate change and health. An exploratory design was used to investigate how vocational education supports solutions for climate change and health. The results showed that vocational education plays a significant role in building safety and resilience of people in the region. Most significantly, getting an accredited qualification on health resilience and/or job in the health sector may help them to respond to climate change effectively and efficiently

    Muon Catalyzed Fusion in 3 K Solid Deuterium

    Muon catalyzed fusion in deuterium has traditionally been studied in gaseous and liquid targets. The TRIUMF solid-hydrogen-layer target system has been used to study the fusion reaction rates in the solid phase of D_2 at a target temperature of 3 K. Products of two distinct branches of the reaction were observed; neutrons by a liquid organic scintillator, and protons by a silicon detector located inside the target system. The effective molecular formation rate from the upper hyperfine state of μd\mu d and the hyperfine transition rate have been measured: λ~(3/2)=2.71(7)stat.(32)syst.μ/s\tilde{\lambda}_(3/2)=2.71(7)_{stat.}(32)_{syst.} \mu/s, and λ~(3/2)(1/2)=34.2(8)stat.(1)syst.μ/s\tilde{\lambda}_{(3/2)(1/2)} =34.2(8)_{stat.}(1)_{syst.} \mu /s. The molecular formation rate is consistent with other recent measurements, but not with the theory for isolated molecules. The discrepancy may be due to incomplete thermalization, an effect which was investigated by Monte Carlo calculations.     Assessing the efficacy and impact of a personalised smoking cessation intervention among type 2 diabetic smokers: study protocol for an open-label randomised controlled trial (DISCGO-RCT).

    Few studies have assessed the efficacy of smoking cessation interventions in individuals with type 2 diabetes, but interventions adapted to the specific needs of this population are warranted. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of a smoking cessation intervention in a population of smokers with type 2 diabetes and to measure the metabolic impact of smoking cessation. The study is an open-label, randomised control trial. Participants recruited from a sanitary region of Switzerland will be randomly allocated to either the intervention or the control arm. The intervention group will have four individual counselling sessions over 12 weeks. Trained research nurses will conduct the behavioural intervention, using motivational interviews and addressing diabetes and gender specificities. The control group will have one short counselling session at baseline and will be given written information on smoking cessation. Both groups will have a follow-up visit at 26 and 52 weeks. Demographic and medical data will be collected at baseline and follow-up, along with blood and urine samples. The primary study outcome is continuous smoking abstinence validated by expired-air carbon monoxide from week 12 to week 52. Secondary study outcomes are continuous and 7-day point prevalence smoking abstinence at 12 and 26 weeks; change in motivation to quit and cigarette consumption; and change in glycosylated haemoglobin levels, body weight, waist circumference and renal function after smoking cessation. In a subsample of 80 participants, change in stool microbiota from baseline will be measured at 3, 8 and 26 weeks after smoking cessation.     PrivateRide: A Privacy-Enhanced Ride-Hailing Service

    In the past few years, we have witnessed a rise in the popularity of ride-hailing services (RHSs), an on-line marketplace that enables accredited drivers to use their own cars to drive ride-hailing users. Unlike other transportation services, RHSs raise significant privacy concerns, as providers are able to track the precise mobility patterns of millions of riders worldwide. We present the first survey and analysis of the privacy threats in RHSs. Our analysis exposes high-risk privacy threats that do not occur in conventional taxi services. Therefore, we pro- pose PrivateRide, a privacy-enhancing and practical solu- tion that offers anonymity and location privacy for riders, and protects drivers’ information from harvesting attacks. PrivateRide lowers the high-risk privacy threats in RHSs to a level that is at least as low as that of many taxi services. Using real data-sets from Uber and taxi rides, we show that PrivateRide significantly enhances riders’ privacy, while preserving tangible accuracy in ride matching and fare calculation, with only negligible effects on convenience. Moreover, by using our Android implementation for experimental evaluations, we show that PrivateRide’s overhead during ride setup is negligible. In short, we enable privacy- conscious riders to achieve levels of privacy that are not possible in current RHSs and even in some conventional taxi services, thereby offering a potential business differentiator

    HOW DOES COALESCENCE OF DENDRITE ARMS OR GRAINS INFLUENCE HOT TEARING ?

    Hot tearing, a severe defect occurring during solidification, is the conjunction of tensile stresses which are transmitted to the mushy zone by the coherent solid underneath and of an insufficient liquid feeding to compensate for the volumetric change. In most recent hot tearing criteria, one of the critical issues is the definition of a coherency point which, in low-concentration alloys, corresponds to the bridging or coalescence of the primary phase. A coalescence model has been developed recently using the concept of the disruptive pressure in thin liquid films.[1] It has been shown that large-misorientation grain boundaries, which are characterized by an interfacial energy, γgb, larger than twice the solid-liquid interfacial energy, γsl, solidify at an undercooling ΔTb = (γgb - 2γsl)/(Δsfδ), where Δsf is the entropy of fusion and δ the thickness of the diffuse interface. When γgb < 2γsl (e.g., low-angle grain boundaries), dendrite arms coalesce as soon as they impinge on each other. Using such concepts and a back-diffusion model, the percolation of equiaxed, randomly oriented grains has been studied in 2D : it is shown that the grain structure gradually evolves from isolated grains separated by a continuous interdendritic liquid film, to a fully coherent solid with a few remaining wet boundaries. The implication of such findings for the hot cracking tendency of aluminum alloys are discussed

    Addressing climate change at a much younger age than just at the decision-making level: Perceptions from primary school teachers in Fiji

    This study uses an explanatory design to investigate the role of primary education in addressing climate change in primary schools in Fiji. A self-administered questionnaire (N=30) was conducted with primary school teachers from 14 primary schools in Fiji. Using frequency analysis, all teachers perceived that addressing climate change at a much younger age is more effective than just addressing it at the decision-making level. Furthermore, a Kendall tau-b was performed, and identified a significant correlation between the primary school teachers’ location and recommendations for further training on climate change (τb=.59, p<.001) and work relevance and climate evaluation (τb=.6, p<.001). The same factors (e.g. work relevancy, helping primary education adapt to climate change, etc.) were explored qualitatively using desktop review, literature search and found addressing climate change at a much younger age to be significant. These results are expected to perfect not only the role of primary education but to contribute significantly to the achievements of a climate-resilient Fiji by 2030 and beyond

    Minimal Stability in Maximal Supergravity

    Recently, it has been shown that maximal supergravity allows for non-supersymmetric AdS critical points that are perturbatively stable. We investigate this phenomenon of stability without supersymmetry from the sGoldstino point of view. In particular, we calculate the projection of the mass matrix onto the sGoldstino directions, and derive the necessary conditions for stability. Indeed we find a narrow window allowing for stable SUSY breaking points. As a by-product of our analysis, we find that it seems impossible to perturb supersymmetric critical points into non-supersymmetric ones: there is a minimal amount of SUSY breaking in maximal supergravity.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure. v2: two typos corrected, published versio
