    Mechanism of strength degradation for hot corrosion of alpha-SiC

    Sintered alpha SiC was corroded by thin films of Na2SO4 and Na2CO3 molten salts at 1000%. This hot corrosion attack reduced room temperature strengths by as much as 50%. Strength degradation was porportional to the degree and uniformity of corrosion pitting attack as controlled by the chemistry of the molten salt. Extensive fractography identified corrosion pits as the most prevalent source of failure. A fracture mechanics treatment of the strength/pit depth relationship produced an average K sub IC equal to 2.6 MPa sub m 1/2, which is consistent with published values

    Reaction of cobalt in SO2 atmospheric at elevated temperatures

    The reaction rate of cobalt in SO2 argon environments was measured at 650 C, 700 C, 750 C and 800 C. Product scales consist primarily of an interconnected sulfide phase in an oxide matrix. At 700 C to 800 C a thin sulfide layer adjacent to the metal is also observed. At all temperatures, the rapid diffusion of cobalt outward through the interconnected sulfide appears to be important. At 650 C, the reaction rate slows dramatically after five minutes due to a change in the distribution of these sulfides. At 700 C and 750 C the reaction is primarily diffusion controlled values of diffusivity of cobalt (CoS) calculated from this work show favorable agreement with values of diffusivity of cobalt (CoS) calculated from previous sulfidation work. At 800 C, a surface step becomes rate limiting

    Thin films of Na2SO4 and Na2CO3 at 1000 C lead to severe pitting of sintered alpha-SiC. These pits are important as they cause a strength reduction in this material. The growth of product layers is related to pit formation for the Na2CO3 case. The early reaction stages involve repeated oxidation and dissolution to form sodium silicate. This results in severe grain boundary attack. After this a porous silica layer forms between the sodium silicate melt and the SiC. The pores in this layer appear to act as paths for the melt to reach the SiC and create larger pits

    In this survey, we examine the operations of innovation processes within industrial districts by exploring the ways in which differentiation, specialization, and integration affect the generation, diffusion, and use of new knowledge in such districts. We begin with an analysis of the importance of the division of labour and then investigate the effects of social embeddedness on innovation. We also consider the effect of forms of organization within industrial districts at various stages of product and process life, and we examine the negative aspects of embeddedness for innovation. We conclude with a discussion of the possible consequences of new information and communications technologies on innovation in industrial districts

    Burner rig corrosion of SiC at 1000 deg C

    Sintered alpha-SiC was examined in both oxidation and hot corrosion with a burner rig at 400 kPa (4 atm) and 1000 C with a flow velocity of 310 ft/sec. Oxidation tests for times to 46 hr produced virtually no attack, whereas tests with 4 ppm Na produced extensive corrosion in 13-1/2 hr. Thick glassy layers composed primarily of sodium silicate formed in the salt corrosion tests. This corrosion attack caused severe pitting of the silicon carbide substrate which led to a 32 percent strength decrease below the as-received material. Parallel furnace tests of Na2SO4/air induced attacked yielded basically similar results with some slight product composition differences. The differences are explained in terms of the continuous sulfate deposition which occurs in a burner rig

    Assessing Laws and Legal Authorities for Obesity Prevention and Control

    This is the first paper in a two part series on the laws and legal authorities for obesity prevention and control, which resulted from the National Summit on Legal Preparedness for Obesity Prevention and Control in 2008. In this paper, the authors apply the “laws and legal authorities” component of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) legal framework on public health legal preparedness to demonstrate the essential role that law can play in the fight against obesity. Their analysis identified numerous laws and policies in the three vital domains of healthy lifestyles, healthy places, and healthy societies. For example, in terms of healthy lifestyles, governments can impact nutrition through: food subsidies, taxation, and bans; food marketing strategies; and nutritional labeling and education. With regard to healthy places, state and local governments can apply zoning laws and policy decisions to change the environment to encourage healthy eating and physical activity. Governments can promote healthy societies through laws and legal authorities that affect the ability to address obesity from a social perspective (such as antidiscrimination law, health care insurance and benefit design, school and day care for children, and surveillance). This paper describes instances of how current laws and legal authorities affect the public health goal of preventing obesity in both positive and negative ways. It also highlights the progressive use of laws at every level of government (i.e., federal, state, and local) and the interaction of these laws as they relate to obesity prevention and control. In addition, general gaps in the use of law for obesity prevention and control are identified for attention and action. (These gaps serve as the basis for the companion paper, which delineates options for policymakers, practitioners, and other key stakeholders in the improvement of laws and legal authorities for obesity prevention and control.

    Effect of Massive Dosage of Vitamin A on the Blood Plasma Fat and Vitamin A Levels in Dairy Calves

    Although the significance of vitamin A in the nutrition of the young dairy calf is well recognized, the effects of ingestion of large amounts of this vitamin, particularly as related to other blood constituents, have received comparatively little attention. Investigations with other species suggest that there may be a relationship between vitamin A intake and the level of the serum lipids. Josephs (1942) reported that the administration of large amounts of vitamin A increased total serum lipids in both normal and vitamin A-deficient rats, the effect being much greater and persisting longer in the latter. Similar results were observed in vitamin A-deficient infants (Josephs, 1945). Children with the nephrotic syndrome also displayed a marked rise in total plasma lipids following administration of vitamin A alcohol in aqueous dispersion (Kagan, Thomas, Jordan and Abt, 1950). The objective of the present study was to ascertain the effect of massive doses of vitamin A in oily and in aqueous dispersion on the blood plasma vitamin A and fat levels in dairy calves which were near the state of vitamin A deficiency
