Hole tunneling times in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier structures

    Get PDF
We have calculated hole tunneling times in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier structures taking quantum well band-mixing effects into account. Our results indicate that for sufficiently high hole temperatures and concentrations, band-mixing effects reduce average hole tunneling times from the pure heavy hole value to values comparable to electron tunneling times in the same structure. For very low hole temperatures and concentrations, band mixing is less important and average hole tunneling times should approach the pure heavy hole value. These results provide an explanation for previously reported experimental results in which electrons and holes were found to be characterized by very similar tunneling times

Two-band modeling of narrow band gap and interband tunneling devices

A two-band transfer matrix method has been developed to study tunneling currents in narrow gap and interband tunnel structures. This relatively simple model gives good agreement with recently reported experimental results for InAs/AlSb/InAs/AlSb/InAs double-barrier heterostructures and InAs/AlSb/GaSb/AlSb/InAs resonant interband tunneling devices, and should be useful in the design of new interband tunneling devices

Evolution of a localized thermal explosion in a reactive gas

Experimental observations of ignition in premixed gaseous reactants indicate that perfectly homogeneous initiation is practically unrealizable. Instead, combustion first sets in, as a rule, at small, discrete sites where inherent inhomogeneities cause chemical activity to proceed preferentially and lead to localized explosions. Combustion waves propagating away from these hot spots or reaction centers eventually envelop the remaining bulk. This study examines the spatial structure and temporal evolution of a hot spot for a model involving Arrhenius kinetics. The hot spot, characterized by peaks in pressure and temperature with little diminution in local density, is shown to have one of two possible self-similar structures. The analysis employs a combination of asymptotics and numerics, and terminates when pressure and temperature in the explosion have peaked

Many-body effects on the capacitance of multilayers made from strongly correlated materials

Recent work by Kopp and Mannhart on novel electronic systems formed at oxide interfaces has shown interesting effects on the capacitances of these devices. We employ inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory to calculate the capacitance of multilayered nanostructures. These multilayered nanostructures are composed of semi-infinite metallic leads coupled via a strongly correlated dielectric barrier region. The barrier region can be adjusted from a metallic regime to a Mott insulator through adjusting the interaction strength. We examine the effects of varying the barrier width, temperature, potential difference, screening length, and chemical potential. We find that the interaction strength has a relatively strong effect on the capacitance, while the potential and temperature show weaker dependence.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, REVTe

Stochastic B-series analysis of iterated Taylor methods

For stochastic implicit Taylor methods that use an iterative scheme to compute their numerical solution, stochastic B--series and corresponding growth functions are constructed. From these, convergence results based on the order of the underlying Taylor method, the choice of the iteration method, the predictor and the number of iterations, for It\^o and Stratonovich SDEs, and for weak as well as strong convergence are derived. As special case, also the application of Taylor methods to ODEs is considered. The theory is supported by numerical experiments

    Interactions of Cosmic Superstrings

    Get PDF
We develop methods by which cosmic superstring interactions can be studied in detail. These include the reconnection probability and emission of radiation such as gravitons or small string loops. Loop corrections to these are discussed, as well as relationships to (p,q)(p,q)-strings. These tools should allow a phenomenological study of string models in anticipation of upcoming experiments sensitive to cosmic string radiation.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; v2: updated reference
