Dust particles from comets and asteroids collected at the Earth's orbit: Parent-daughter relationships
The relative contributions of comets and asteroids to the reservoir of dust in the interplanetary medium is not well known. There are direct observations of dust released from comets and there is evidence to associate the IRAS dust bands with possible collisions of Asteroids in the main belt. It is believed that one may combine lab analysis of the physics and chemistry of captured particles with orbital data in order to identify comet and asteroid parent bodies. It is possible to use the collected orbits of the dust to connect with its source in two ways. One is to consider the long time orbit evolution of the dust under Poynting-Robertson drag. The other is to look at the prompt orbit change of dust from comets onto trajectories that intersect the earth's orbit. In order to characterize the orbits of dust particles evolved over a long period of time, a study of its orbital evolution was undertaken. Various parameters associated with these dust orbits as they cross the Earth's orbit were considered in order to see if one may discriminate between particles evolved from comets and asteroids. The method was to calculate by a numerical procedure the orbits of dust particles after they left their parent bodies. It appears that as the particles pass the Earth's orbit, asteroidal grains and cometary grains can be differentiated on the basis of their measured orbital eccentricities even after much planetary perturbation. Broad parent daughter associations can be made on this basis from measurement of their trajectories intercepted in earth orbit
Aerospace vehicle
A dual structure aerospace vehicle is described which has an aeroshell structure and an internally disposed separable and reusable integral tank/thrust structure. The tank/thrust structure is inuslated for cryogenic fuels and the cavity within aeroshell is insulated from the tank/thrust structure. An internal support ring within the cavity serves as an attachment for lugs on the tank/thrust structure via double hinges. The aft end of tank/thrust structure is provided with rocket engines and exit nozzles with a trunnion supporting the tank/thrust structure within the aeroshell
Use of ERTS imagery for natural resources research and development in Lesotho
The author has identified the following significant results. As far as the geological aspects of the project were concerned, the project was a success. It was concluded that: (1) It is possible to trace the lithological boundaries between sedimentary rocks and basaltic rocks, both extrusive and intrusive. (2) It was possible to localize sponges in the mountain areas, some of which may conceal undiscovered diamond pipes. (3) Possible main structural axes were localized within the framework of lineaments. Due to drought which occured at the time the images were gathered by ERTS-1, the usefulness of the data was limited for agricultural purposes
Daze fasteners
A daze fastener system for connecting two or more structural elements wherein the structural elements and fastener parts have substantially different coefficient of thermal expansion physical property characteristics is employed in this invention. By providing frusto-conical abutting surfaces between the structural elements and fastener parts any differences in thermal expansion/contraction between the parts is translated to sliding motion and avoids deleterious thermal stresses in the connection. An essential feature for isotropic homogeneous material connections is that at least two sets of mating surfaces are required wherein each set of mating surfaces have line element extensions that pass through a common point

Quantum corrections to the Larmor radiation formula in scalar electrodynamics
We use the semi-classical approximation in perturbative scalar quantum
electrodynamics to calculate the quantum correction to the Larmor radiation
formula to first order in Planck's constant in the non-relativistic
approximation, choosing the initial state of the charged particle to be a
momentum eigenstate. We calculate this correction in two cases: in the first
case the charged particle is accelerated by a time-dependent but
space-independent vector potential whereas in the second case it is accelerated
by a time-independent vector potential which is a function of one spatial
coordinate. We find that the corrections in these two cases are different even
for a charged particle with the same classical motion. The correction in each
case turns out to be non-local in time in contrast to the classical

Assortative Mixing Equilibria in Social Network Games
It is known that individuals in social networks tend to exhibit homophily
(a.k.a. assortative mixing) in their social ties, which implies that they
prefer bonding with others of their own kind. But what are the reasons for this
phenomenon? Is it that such relations are more convenient and easier to
maintain? Or are there also some more tangible benefits to be gained from this
collective behaviour?
The current work takes a game-theoretic perspective on this phenomenon, and
studies the conditions under which different assortative mixing strategies lead
to equilibrium in an evolving social network. We focus on a biased preferential
attachment model where the strategy of each group (e.g., political or social
minority) determines the level of bias of its members toward other group
members and non-members. Our first result is that if the utility function that
the group attempts to maximize is the degree centrality of the group,
interpreted as the sum of degrees of the group members in the network, then the
only strategy achieving Nash equilibrium is a perfect homophily, which implies
that cooperation with other groups is harmful to this utility function. A
second, and perhaps more surprising, result is that if a reward for inter-group
cooperation is added to the utility function (e.g., externally enforced by an
authority as a regulation), then there are only two possible equilibria,
namely, perfect homophily or perfect heterophily, and it is possible to
characterize their feasibility spaces. Interestingly, these results hold
regardless of the minority-majority ratio in the population.
We believe that these results, as well as the game-theoretic perspective
presented herein, may contribute to a better understanding of the forces that
shape the groups and communities of our society
Biot-Savart-like law in electrostatics
The Biot-Savart law is a well-known and powerful theoretical tool used to
calculate magnetic fields due to currents in magnetostatics. We extend the
range of applicability and the formal structure of the Biot-Savart law to
electrostatics by deriving a Biot-Savart-like law suitable for calculating
electric fields. We show that, under certain circumstances, the traditional
Dirichlet problem can be mapped onto a much simpler Biot-Savart-like problem.
We find an integral expression for the electric field due to an arbitrarily
shaped, planar region kept at a fixed electric potential, in an otherwise
grounded plane. As a by-product we present a very simple formula to compute the
field produced in the plane defined by such a region. We illustrate the
usefulness of our approach by calculating the electric field produced by planar

Lax matrices for Yang-Baxter maps
It is shown that for a certain class of Yang-Baxter maps (or set-theoretical
solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation) the Lax representation can be
derived straight from the map itself. A similar phenomenon for 3D consistent
equations on quad-graphs has been recently discovered by A. Bobenko and one of
the authors, and by F. Nijhoff
