Ten Tongues and One Lie: Turco-Roman Relations c. 552-650\u27\u27

In 62 7 CE, a nomadic army exploded through the Caspian Gates and into the northernmost lands of the Sasanian Empire (in present day Dagestan and Azerbaijan). Our principal historian, Movses Dasxuranc\u27i (also called Movses Kagankatvac\u27i) calls them Khazars, and he may well be correct. 1 But they were certainly a part of the Western Turkic KJ1aganate, invading at the behest of the great TongYabghu Khagan. According to Movses, the attack was exceedingly brutal, with the Turks, in their universal wrath, slaughtering men. women, and children like shameless and ravenous wolves. 2 This was no random attack. It was the opening salvo of a grand invasion, planned in concert by the Roman forces of Emperor Hcraclius. In time, this invasion would reverse the course of the brutal war between the Romans and Sasanians, allowing the Romans to reclaim their eastern provinces, for all the good that would do them. After all, shortly afterwards would come another nomadic invasion from the south, ushering in the Caliphates of the Arabs

Money, Power, Respect: Philanthropic Giving Of African American Alumni Of Predominately White Institutions

    Get PDF
As colleges and universities throughout the United States face economic downturns that translate into budget reductions, hiring freezes, and academic program dissolution, it is becoming increasingly more pertinent to secure valuable alumni donations to meet the financial and budgetary needs of these institutions. African American alumni of Predominately white Institutions (PWIs) have often been an overlooked resource for colleges and universities soliciting philanthropic donations. This study will explore the relationship between African American alumni and their Predominately white alma maters and how this relationship affects philanthropic giving to the institutions. In addition to exposing the stimulus for giving to their alma mater, the study will also explore the experiences of the alumni as undergraduates that motivated their desire to give. Through use of case study methodology and a cross-case analysis, the researcher will capture the narratives of participants selected from a population of African American alumni of Acme State University and A&M College. The researcher will apply a cross-case analysis when exploring the data in the hopes of exposing commonalities that influence the alumni/alma mater relationships as well as themes that impact philanthropic giving of African American alumni to their Predominately white alma mate

Factors that Influence Emirati Male Achievement in Higher Education

    Get PDF
The success of Emirati male students in higher education is one filled with positive interactions between the students, faculty, and staff. The influence of faculty in the success of Emirati males is vital to the overall curricular success of this student population. The strong cultural ties to seeking out elders for guidance and influence is easily replicated on college and university campuses. In this manuscript we examine the history of education in the Middle East from its inception to the meteoric rise of higher education. Through examining the past and present education we will explore how the cultural and societal norms have provided an instrumental key to the factors that help to encourage success amongst Emirati males. A two-fold study explored the factors that Emirati males believed has the greatest influence on their curricular and co-curricular success in higher education environments. Findings indicate that Emirati male achievement in higher education may be mediated by a sense of patriotism, obligation to represent the family, and influenced by interactions with faculty members

The structural and magnetic characteristics of the unidirectionally solidified MnSb-Sb eutectic system

    Get PDF
The first objective of this research is to study the crystallographic, morphologic, and magnetic properties of the MnSb-Sb eutectic system. The emphasis of the investigation will be aimed at discovering the relation between and importance of the shape and crystalline anisotropies, and also determining how these factors influence magnetic behavior. A second objective is to relate the properties of the magnetic phase of the eutectic to those of the bulk MnSb compound, in an attempt to unravel the contradictions found in the literature

Diversity and inclusivity are two must-teach components that the academy needs to incorporate into its curriculum to enrich student experiences. Due to globalization, technological advances, and norms, societies are becoming more homogenous. Institutions of higher learning should prioritize teaching diversity and inclusion with a driven and determined approach to prepare students better personally and professionally

What is the role of culture, diversity, and community engagement in transdisciplinary translational science?

    Get PDF
Concepts of culture and diversity are necessary considerations in the scientific application of theory generation and developmental processes of preventive interventions; yet, culture and/or diversity are often overlooked until later stages (e.g., adaptation [T3] and dissemination [T4]) of the translational science process. Here, we present a conceptual framework focused on the seamless incorporation of culture and diversity throughout the various stages of the translational science process (T1-T5). Informed by a community-engaged research approach, this framework guides integration of cultural and diversity considerations at each phase with emphasis on the importance and value of "citizen scientists" being research partners to promote ecological validity. The integrated partnership covers the first phase of intervention development through final phases that ultimately facilitate more global, universal translation of changes in attitudes, norms, and systems. Our comprehensive model for incorporating culture and diversity into translational research provides a basis for further discussion and translational science development
