Antemortem inspection of pigs on-farm : impact on food safety and animal welfare
Antemortem inspection is a visual health check that has always been done at the abattoir before slaughter to separate pigs that are suffering or that may not be completely suitable for human consumption... The adoption of hazard analysis and critical control point quality assurance systems by the Australian Pig Industry has provided a framework for performance of antemortem inspection on-farm. Producers in three states (Victoria, Queensland and South Australia) were trained to conduct antemortem inspection on-farm, and their efficiency evaluated against antemortem inspection conducted at the abattoir.Thesis (M.Ag.Sc.) -- University of Adelaide, Dept. of Animal Science, 200
Variations in Quercus sp. Pollen Seasons (1996--2011) in Poznań, Poland, in Relation to Meteorological Parameters
The aim of this study is to supply detailed information about oak (Quercus sp.) pollen seasons in Pozna\', Poland, based on a 16-year aerobiological data series (1996--2011). The pollen data were collected using a volumetric spore trap of the Hirst design located in Pozna\' city center. The limits of the pollen seasons were calculated using the 95 % method. The influence of meteorological parameters on temporal variations in airborne pollen was examined using correlation analysis. Start and end dates of oak pollen seasons in Pozna\' varied markedly from year-to-year (14 and 17 days, respectively). Most of the pollen grains (around 75 % of the seasonal pollen index) were recorded within the first 2 weeks of the pollen season. The tenfold variation was observed between the least and the most intensive pollen seasons. These fluctuations were significantly related to the variation in the sum of rain during the period second fortnight of March to first fortnight of April the year before pollination (r = 0.799; p < 0.001). During the analyzing period, a significant advance in oak pollen season start dates was observed (â0.55 day/year; p = 0.021), which was linked with an increase in the mean temperature during the second half of March and first half of April (+0.2 °C; p = 0.014). Daily average oak pollen counts correlated positively with mean and maximum daily temperatures, and negatively with daily rainfall and daily mean relative humidity
A comparative LM and SEM study of the structure of the mucosal glands of the gallbladder in two species of canids: the dog and the Chinese raccoon dog
The studies were performed on the mucosa of the body of the gallbladder in the
dog and Chinese raccoon dog, species belonging to the Canidae family. The
mucosal glands in both species mostly have the form of alveolar or short tubular
secretory units without excretory ducts and are situated in the middle part at the
bottom of the crypts surrounded by folds of the mucosa. Sporadically we observed
the mucous intraepithelial glands.
The results of the light and scanning electron microscopic observations indicate
interspecies differences in the density, type and size of secretory units and also
their openings. In the raccoon dog the number of secretory units is 30 times
greater than in the dog and the units are predominantly simple glands with
small openings. In the dog mostly 2 or 3 secretory units with common wide
openings were observed. The SEM images of the NaOH macerated mucosa of
the gallbladders showed a connective tissue framework around the glands composed
of flat lamina with an irregular pattern of fine collagen fibres and numerous
fenestrations. The collagen network around the openings of the glands is
more compact and provides mechanical support for the glands of the gallbladder
The distribution and structure of the lingual papillae on the tongue of the bank vole Clethrinomys glareolus
The distribution and three-dimensional structure of the lingual papillae were
studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. The elongated tongue in the
bank vole is about 12 mm in length and about 3 mm in width. The characteristic
features of the tongue are the median sulcus on the apex of the tongue, considerable
narrowing in the body of the tongue and a well developed intermolar
prominence. On the surface of the apex and body of the tongue three morphological
types of the filiform papillae and fungiform papillae were observed. The
intermolar prominence of the tongue is covered with conical and saw-like filiform
papillae. On the posteriolateral margin of the intermolar prominence two
foliate papillae were found.
A single oval vallate papilla was situated in the median line of the anterior part
of the root of the tongue. The posterior part of the lingual root is flat without
papillae. The distribution and types of the lingual papillae found in the bank
vole are similar to those in species of the Microtinae family
Poetyka (nie)wyrażalnego pożądania, czyli zarys historii powie- ści gejowskiej w Polsce na tle socjologiczno-kulturowym
The aim of the paper is to show the history of Polish gay novel and explain the very term. However, the essence of the research problem is not the history itself, but drawing attention to the need of adopting a multidimensional perspective in the deliberations concerning homosexuality in general (including gay novel). An interdisciplinary approach to the issue enables one to make observations concerning the impact of social and political realities on literature, while at the same time to analyse a work of art as a statement in public debate on homosexuality and homosexuals
