    More on the covariant retarded Green's function for the electromagnetic field in de Sitter spacetime

    In a recent paper (Phys. Rev. D78, 084031 (2008), arXiv:0808.0642, Ref. [1]) it was shown in examples that the covariant retarded Green's functions in particular gauges for electromagnetism and linearized gravity can be used to reproduce field configurations correctly in spite of the spacelike nature of past infinity in de Sitter spacetime. In this paper we extend the work of Ref. [1] concerning the electromagnetic field and show that the covariant retarded Green's function with an arbitrary value of the gauge parameter reproduces the electromagnetic field from two opposite charges at antipodal points of de Sitter spacetime.Comment: 4 pages, addendum to PRD 78, 084031 (2008) [arXiv:0808.0642

    Combining Locations from Working Memory and Long-Term Memory into a Common Spatial Image

    This research uses a novel integration paradigm to investigate whether target locations read in from long-term memory (LTM) differ from perceptually encoded inputs in spatial working-memory (SWM) with respect to systematic spatial error and/or noise, and whether SWM can simultaneously encompass both of these sources. Our results provide evidence for a composite representation of space in SWM derived from both perception and LTM, albeit with a loss in spatial precision of locations retrieved from LTM. More generally, the data support the concept of a spatial image in working memory and extend its potential sources to representations retrieved from LTM

    Perception of 3-D Location Based on Vision, Touch, and Extended Touch

    Perception of the near environment gives rise to spatial images in working memory that continue to represent the spatial layout even after cessation of sensory input. As the observer moves, these spatial images are continuously updated. This research is concerned with (1) whether spatial images of targets are formed when they are sensed using extended touch (i.e., using a probe to extend the reach of the arm) and (2) the accuracy with which such targets are perceived. In Experiment 1, participants perceived the 3-D locations of individual targets from a fixed origin and were then tested with an updating task involving blindfolded walking followed by placement of the hand at the remembered target location. Twenty-four target locations, representing all combinations of two distances, two heights, and six azimuths, were perceived by vision or by blindfolded exploration with the bare hand, a 1-m probe, or a 2-m probe. Systematic errors in azimuth were observed for all targets, reflecting errors in representing the target locations and updating. Overall, updating after visual perception was best, but the quantitative differences between conditions were small. Experiment 2 demonstrated that auditory information signifying contact with the target was not a factor. Overall, the results indicate that 3-D spatial images can be formed of targets sensed by extended touch and that perception by extended touch, even out to 1.75 m, is surprisingly accurate

    Many developers wish to capitalize on touch-screen technology for developing aids for the blind, particularly by incorporating vibrotactile stimulation to convey patterns on their surfaces, which otherwise are featureless. Our belief is that they will need to take into account basic research on haptic perception in designing these graphics interfaces. We point out constraints and limitations in haptic processing that affect the use of these devices. We also suggest ways to use sound to augment basic information from touch, and we include evaluation data from users of a touch-screen device with vibrotactile and auditory feedback that we have been developing, called a vibro-audio interface

    BUR Kinase Selectively Regulates H3 K4 Trimethylation and H2B Ubiquitylation through Recruitment of the PAF Elongation Complex

    Histone-lysine methylation is linked to transcriptional regulation and the control of epigenetic inheritance. Lysine residues can be mono-, di-, or trimethylated, and it has been suggested that each methylation state of a given lysine may impart a unique biological function [1 and 2]. In yeast, histone H3 lysine 4 (K4) is mono-, di-, and trimethylated by the Set1 histone methyltransferase [3 and 4]. Previous studies show that Set1 associates with RNA polymerase II and demarcates transcriptionally active genes with K4 trimethylation [5]. To determine whether K4 trimethylation might be selectively regulated, we screened a library of yeast deletion mutants associated with transcriptional regulation and chromatin function. We identified BUR2, a cyclin for the Bur1/2 (BUR) cyclin-dependent protein kinase, as a specific regulator of K4 trimethylation [ 6]. Surprisingly, BUR also regulated H2B monoubiquitylation, whereas other K4 methylation states and H3 lysine 79 (K79) methylation were unaffected. Synthetic genetic array (SGA) and transcription microarray analyses of a BUR2 mutant revealed that BUR is functionally similar to the PAF, Rad6, and Set1 complexes. These data suggest that BUR acts upstream of these factors to control their function. In support, we show that recruitment of the PAF elongation complex to genes is significantly impaired in a BUR2 deletion. Our data reveal a novel function for the BUR kinase in transcriptional regulation through the selective control of histone modifications

    Effects of selection for decreased residual feed intake on composition and quality of fresh pork

    The objectives of this study were to determine the extent to which selection for decreased residual feed intake (RFI) affects pork composition and quality. Pigs from the fifth generation of selection for decreased RFI (select) and a randomly selected line (control) were utilized. Two experiments were conducted. In Exp. 1, barrows (22.6 ± 3.9 kg) from select and control lines were paired based on age and BW. The test was conducted in 8 replicates of pairs for the test period of 6 wk. Calpastatin activity and myosin isoforms profile were determined on samples from the LM. Control barrows were heavier (59.1 vs. 55.0 kg; P \u3c 0.01) at the end of the test period. Calpastatin activity was greater (P \u3c 0.01) in LM of select barrows than control barrows. In Exp. 2, composition and quality of gilts (114 kg) from control and select lines were determined. The model included fixed effects of line, slaughter date, melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) genotype, barn group, line × slaughter date, genotype × line interactions, a covariate of off-test BW, and sire, pen, and litter fitted as random effects. The select line (n = 80) had 0.043 kg less (P \u3c 0.05) RFI per day than the control line (n = 89). Loin quality and composition were determined at 2 d postmortem. Desmin degradation was measured at 2 and 7 d postmortem. Purge, cook loss, sensory traits, and star probe texture were measured at 7 to 10 d postmortem on cooked chops. Residual correlations between RFI and composition and quality traits were calculated. Compared with the control line, carcasses from the select line tended to have less (P = 0.09) backfat, greater (P \u3c 0.05) loin depth, and greater (P \u3c 0.05) fat free lean. Loin chops from the select line had less (P\u3c 0.01) intramuscular lipid content than loin chops from control line. Significant residual correlations between RFI and both tenderness (r = 0.24, P \u3c 0.01) and star probe (r = −0.26, P \u3c 0.01) were identified. Selection for decreased RFI has the potential to improve carcass composition with few effects on pH and water-holding capacity. However, decreased RFI could negatively affect tenderness and texture because of decreased lipid content and decreased postmortem protein degradation

    Pigs Selected for Increased Feed Efficiency Are Less Affected by Experimental Infection with the PRRS Virus

    Analyses of average daily gain (ADG) and viral load (VL) suggest that selection for increased feed efficiency based on residual feed intake (RFI) does not increase the impact of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) infection on these two traits. In fact, the results show that growth of the more efficient pigs was less affected by PRRS infection than that of the inefficient line. These findings provide commercial farmers with additional incentives to invest in feed-efficient pigs

    Permanent annihilation of thermally activated defects which limit the lifetime of float-zone silicon

    We have observed very large changes in the minority carrier lifetime when high purity float-zone (FZ) silicon wafers are subject to heat-treatments in the range of 200– 1100˚C. Recombination centres were found to become activated upon annealing at 450–700˚C, causing significant reductions in the bulk lifetime, detrimental for high efficiency solar cells and stable high powered devices. Photoluminescence imaging of wafers annealed at 500˚C revealed concentric circular patterns, with lower lifetimes occurring in the centre, and higher lifetimes around the periphery. Deep level transient spectroscopy measurements on samples extracted from the centre of an n-type FZ silicon wafer annealed at 500˚C revealed a large variety of defects with activation energies ranging between 0.16– 0.36eV. Our measurements indicate that vacancy related defects are causing the severe degradation in lifetime when FZ wafers are annealed at 450–700˚C. Upon annealing FZ silicon at temperatures >800°C, the lifetime is completely recovered, whereby the defect-rich regions vanish and do not reappear (permanently annihilated). Our results indicate that, in general, as-grown FZ silicon should not be assumed to be defect lean, nor can it be assumed that the bulk lifetime will remain stable during thermal processing, unless annealed at temperatures >1000°C

In an academic world crammed with journals, conference proceedings, websites, and blogs, establishing a new serial publication requires some explanation. As editors, we believe that development is an important subject; that there is a tangible need for more knowledge about the history of development; and that a yearbook is the most appropriate format to publish research on this topic. In the following, we would like to explain why we believe that this is so and how we intend the Yearbook to contribute to the future of the field

    Stochastic Choice of Allelic Expression in Human Neural Stem Cells

    Abstract Monoallelic gene expression, such as genomic imprinting, is well described. Less well-characterized are genes undergoing stochastic monoallelic expression (MA), where specific clones of cells express just one allele at a given locus. We performed genome-wide allelic expression assessment of human clonal neural stem cells derived from cerebral cortex, striatum, and spinal cord, each with differing genotypes. We assayed three separate clonal lines from each donor, distinguishing stochastic MA from genotypic effects. Roughly 2% of genes showed evidence for autosomal MA, and in about half of these, allelic expression was stochastic between different clones. Many of these loci were known neurodevelopmental genes, such as OTX2 and OLIG2. Monoallelic genes also showed increased levels of DNA methylation compared to hypomethylated biallelic loci. Identified monoallelic gene loci showed altered chromatin signatures in fetal brain, suggesting an in vivo correlate of this phenomenon. We conclude that stochastic allelic expression is prevalent in neural stem cells, providing clonal diversity to developing tissues such as the human brain.</jats:p
