Decalogue Five: A Short Film about Killing, Sin, and Community

Decalogue Five tells the story of Waldemar Rekowski (Jan Tesarz), a jaded taxi driver, Piotr Balicki (Krzysztof Globisz), an idealistic, newly-licensed attorney, and Jacek Lazar (Mirosław Baka), a young and troubled drifter, whose lives intersect with one another as a result of fate, or contingent circumstance, or some combination of both. With brutal detail and detachment, the film depicts Jacek’s seemingly aimless wanderings through Warsaw, his senseless killing of Waldemar, his interactions with Piotr (his court-appointed attorney), and his eventual execution after a failed defense in court. Like other films within the Decalogue series, Five illustrates what happens when human beings are forced to confront ethical dilemmas (and thus are forced to confront themselves as responsible moral decision makers) in a world that seems to offer little in the way of moral direction, meaning, purpose, and community with others. Eight out of ten isn't good enough: challenging teachers' perceptions of assessment

One of the more challenging aspects of training teachers is demonstrating that assessment is a great deal more complex than simply marking students' work. It is necessary to show that assessment takes a number of forms, that it is used for a variety of purposes and that it must be applied in a systematic and structured way in order to be effective. This paper describes the techniques used at the Institute of Education, University of London, to encourage training teachers to look at assessment in a new way. The whole-year programme is outlined, but emphasis is placed on an introductory session held at the start of the course. Ostensibly a simple ice-breaking exercise, the game in fact demonstrates many of the pit-falls of assessment and brings to life terms which the trainees will encounter more formally later on in the course

On characteristic polynomials for a generalized chiral random matrix ensemble with a source

We evaluate averages involving characteristic polynomials, inverse characteristic polynomials and ratios of characteristic polynomials for a $N\times N$ random matrix taken from a $L$-deformed Chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble with an external source $\Omega$. Relation to a recently studied statistics of bi-orthogonal eigenvectors in the complex Ginibre ensemble, see Y.V. Fyodorov arXiv:1710.04699, is briefly discussed as a motivation to study asymptotics of these objects in the case of external source proportional to the identity matrix. In particular, for an associated 'complex bulk/chiral edge' scaling regime we retrieve the kernel related to Bessel/Macdonald functions.Comment: published versio
