A Photometric Method for Quantifying Asymmetries in Disk Galaxies

    Get PDF
A photometric method for quantifying deviations from axisymmetry in optical images of disk galaxies is applied to a sample of 32 face-on and nearly face-on spirals. The method involves comparing the relative fluxes contained within trapezoidal sectors arranged symmetrically about the galaxy center of light, excluding the bulge and/or barred regions. Such a method has several advantages over others, especially when quantifying asymmetry in flocculent galaxies. Specifically, the averaging of large regions improves the signal-to-noise in the measurements; the method is not strongly affected by the presence of spiral arms; and it identifies the kinds of asymmetry that are likely to be dynamically important. Application of this "method of sectors" to R-band images of 32 disk galaxies indicates that about 30% of spirals show deviations from axisymmetry at the 5-sigma level.Comment: 17 pages, 2 tables and 6 figures, uses psfig and AAS LaTex; to appear in A

The Disks of Galaxies with Seyfert and Starburst Nuclei: II. Near-Infrared Structural Properties

We have derived the near-infrared structural components of a sample of Seyfert and starburst (SBN) host galaxies by fitting the images of Hunt et al. (1997,ApJS,108,229) with a new two-dimensional decomposition algorithm. An analysis of the fitted parameters shows that Seyfert 1 and SBN bulges resemble normal early-type bulges in structure and color, with (J-K)^c_b about 0.1 mag redder than disk (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert 2 bulges, instead, are bluer than normal with (J-K)^c_b ~ (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert disks (especially Type 1), but not those of SBNs, are abnormally bright (in surface brightness), significantly more so than even the brightest normal disks. Seyfert disks are also compact, but similar to those in normal early-type spirals. For a given mass, Seyferts and especially SBNs are abnormally rich in neutral hydrogen, and there is strong, albeit indirect, evidence for lower mass-to-light (M/L) ratios in Seyfert and SBN disks, but for normal M/Ls in their bulges. In Seyferts and SBNs, HI mass fractions and M/L ratios are anticorrelated, and we attribute the high gas mass fractions and low M/Ls in SBNs and several Seyferts to ongoing star formation. Such abundant gas in Seyferts would be expected to inhibit bar formation, which may explain why active galaxies are not always barred.Comment: 25 pgs (two-column, single-spaced) including 8 incorporated figures and 2 tables (aas2pp4, amssym, epsfig). This work aimed to evaluate hematological parameters and phagocytic neutrophil functions of naturally selected Curraleiro Pé Duro cattle breed (Bos taurus) and crossbreed cattle (Bos taurus X Bos indicus). Two groups of adult cows: Natural= Curraleiro Pé Duro cattle breed (n=10) and Selected = ¾ Nelore X Simental crossbreed animals (n=10) were evaluated. Blood was sampled to make hemogram, in vitro evaluation of neutrophil phagocytosis and basal Nitroblue Tetrazolium - NBT reduction (without any stimulus). The results showed no difference in hematological parameters between these groups. Natural group had greater phagocytic index of neutrophils through pathogen-associated molecular patterns receptors (PAMPs) while in Selected group this same index was greater using opsonin receptors. The reduction of NBT was lower for Natural group than Selected group. In conclusion, we suggest that both animal groups showed differences in neutrophil phagocytic functions in relation to pathway activation and Curraleiro Pé Duro cattle breed produced more oxygen radicals (superoxide, O2-) than the other tested group
