[ENG] “Development and implementation of electromagnetic propagation models for the prediction of radio channel parameters.”This line of research concerns propagation models which forecast the propagation losses as well as the dispersion in time and space introduced by the radio channel. These models are developed from electromagnetic theories based on Physical Optics and Geometrical Optics in addition to ray tracing techniques, and are implemented in a high-level programming language such as C++. Currently, microcellular urban environments as well as special ones such as tunnels are under study, achieving MIMO-channel models (Multiple Inputs Multiple Outputs) which yield a higher speed data transmission in the radio interface without needing greater bandwidth. “Experimental radio channel measurements.” The undertaken measurements are aimed at validating and refining the developed propagation models and at studying the particularities of the radio channel in every kind of environment (rural, urban, indoor, etc.). Apart from narrow-bandwidth measurements to estimate the propagation losses, which can find application in the planning of first and second generation mobile communications systems (as GSM), at the present time, wide-bandwidth measurements as well as MIMO channel measurements are also being carried out. The wide-bandwidth measurements are undertaken in order to evaluate, not only the mentioned propagation losses, but the channel dispersion in time and space, and could be applied in third generation systems such as UMTS. The MIMO channel measurements use multiple antennas in both the transmission and reception and significantly succeed in improving the channel capacity. Both kind of measurements are focused on microcellular environments and special ones such as tunnels. “Software development based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the planning of mobile communication systems.” Computing tools are turning out to be an essential step for an optimal and efficient planning of mobile communication systems. These tools must be able to handle a big amount of spatial information (digital terrain model, traffic maps, radioelectric coverage, etc.). Therefore, the research group is developing applications which, based on Geographic Information Systems, can be applied in the planning of digital radiocommunication systems

[EN] In this paper, the maximum achievable throughput is analyzed in the intra-wagon channel when multiple-input single-output (MISO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), MISO-OFDM, techniques are used. This analysis is performed from real wideband propagation channel measurements at 28 and 37 GHz, two potential frequency bands to deploy the future fifth-generation (5G) wireless communications networks. Four different scenarios in terms of the access point (AP) and user equipment (UE) positions inside the wagon have been considered, using 4 and 8 antennas at the AP. The performance of both quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QSTBC), combined with Hadamard matrices, and transmit beamforming techniques is studied and evaluated from simulation results. The simulation results take into account the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the antenna correlation for each antenna array configuration at the AP. These results provide useful insight to better understand the intra-wagon channel properties and deploy the future 5G wireless networks in this particular scenario at mmWave frequencies, where high-data-rates are expected to support different types of digital applications. This work was supported in part by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad MINECO, Spain, under Grant TEC2016-78028C3-2-P and Grant TEC2017-86779-C2-2-R and in part by the European FEDER Funds.Sanchis Borrás, C.; Molina-García-Pardo, J.; Rubio Arjona, L.; Pascual-García, J.; Rodrigo Peñarrocha, VM.; Juan Llacer, L.; Reig, J. The measurements were collected inside an underground convoy from 25 to 40 GHz in the frequency domain. A broadband radio over fiber (RoF) link was used in order to avoid the high losses introduced by cables at these frequencies, thus allowing long distances between the transmitter and receiver antennas. Values of the path loss exponent and delay spread are reported at the potential 26, 28 and 38 GHz bands to deploy the future fifth-generation (5G) systems. These results allow us to have a better knowledge of the path loss and time dispersion characteristics of the propagation channel in this particular environment, characterized by rich-scattering with long delays. This work was supported by the Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad of the Spanish Government under the National Projects TEC2016-78028-C3-2-P and TEC2017-86779-C2-2-R, through the Agencia Estatal de Investigacion (AEI) and the Fondo Europeo deDesarrollo Regional (FEDER). This paper presents results on capacity, correlation and K-factor for a 4x4 MIMO system in a microcellular environment. A MIMO channel sounder based on a multiport network analyzer and a fast switch controlled by a laptop has been used. LoS and NLoS situations are distinguished for three antenna elements separation of the arrays each. It has been appreciated a low capacity in some positions of the NLoS situation in spite of a not very high correlation.

Doppler Characterization in Ultra Wideband BAN Channels During Breathing

[EN] Monitoring the physical parameters from devices inside the body, using ultra wideband (UWB) technology, enables the development of high bandwidth demanding applications in real time. The relative movement of the nodes deployed in the body, due to breathing, can give rise to a frequency shifting effect, increasing the fading level in the propagation channel during transmissions. In this article, therefore, we present a study of the frequency effects on the propagation channel derived from the relative movement between two nodes of a wireless body area network (WBAN), at least one of them placed inside the human body, caused by breathing. The study is performed on the basis of the Doppler spectrum characterization in terms of the shape fitting and frequency spread parameter derivation. Continuous wave (CW) signals have been used to cover the UWB range at four selected frequencies: 3.1, 4.8, 6, and 8.5 GHz, and a liquid phantom has been employed for emulating the dielectric properties of the high water content tissues at the considered UWB frequencies. This work was supported in part by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO), Spain, under Grant TEC2016-78028-C3-2-P, in part by the European Union's H2020-MSCA-ITN Program by the "mmWave Communications in the Built Environments-WaveComBE" Project, under Grant 766231, and in part by the European FEDER funds.

In this paper a prediction model used to predict electric field in an area is presented. This model uses the parameters of the contributions (complex amplitude, angle of arrival and diffraction parameters) that arrive to a point and it predicts the coverage in the area close to the point. Parameters are taken from a single simulation with a ray launching application. The model assumes that contributions do not change in the area of reconstruction. Simulations in an area of 100 m2 in an urban environment are presented. Results and computational cost are compared with a ray launching application. This model reduces the computational cost in a large factor.

    Get PDF
A new hybrid uniform theory of diffraction-physical optics (UTD-PO) formulation for the analysis of the multiple diffraction caused by an array of cylinders, assuming sphericalwave incidence, is hereby presented. The solution, validated with numerical data from technical literature, is mathematically less complex and computationally more efficient −for a large number of cylinders− than other existing methods, due to the fact that high-order diffraction terms (slope diffraction) are not considered, without such lack of terms barely entailing any loss in accuracy. Results can be applied in radiowave propagation analysis when multiple diffraction over rounded obstacles has to be considered.

This work presents an explicit formulation for multiple edge diffraction for mobile radiowave propagation in terms of UTD-diffraction coefficients when a spherical incident wave is considered. The solution sharply reduces the computing time over existing formulation, specially when the number of edges is very large. The applicability of the result is interesting for both area coverage and interference predictions in microcellular systems.
