Magnetostrictive Alternator
A magnetostrictive alternator configured to convert pressure waves into electrical energy is provided. It should be appreciated that the magnetostrictive alternator may be combined in some embodiments with a Stirling engine to produce electrical power. The Stirling engine creates the oscillating pressure wave and the magnetostrictive alternator converts the pressure wave into electricity. In some embodiments, the magnetostrictive alternator may include aerogel material and magnetostrictive material. The aerogel material may be configured to convert a higher amplitude pressure wave into a lower amplitude pressure wave. The magnetostrictive material may be configured to generate an oscillating magnetic field when the magnetostrictive material is compressed by the lower amplitude pressure wave
Delayed Photoionization Feedback in a Super Star Cluster in SBS0335-052E
SBS0335-052 is a well studied Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy with one of the
lowest metallicities of any known galaxy. It also contains 6 previously
identified Super Star Clusters. We combine archival HST NICMOS images in the Pa
alpha line and the 1.6 micron continuum of the eastern component, SBS0335-052E,
with other space and ground based data to perform a multi-wavelength analysis
of the super star clusters. We concentrate on the southern most clusters,
designated S1 and S2, which appear to be the youngest clusters and are the
strongest emitters of Pa alpha, radio, and x-ray flux. Our analysis leads to a
possible model for S1 and perhaps S2 as a cluster of very young, massive stars
with strong stellar winds. The wind density can be high enough to absorb the
majority of ionizing photons within less than 1000 AU of the stars, creating
very compact HII regions that emit optically thick radiation at radio
wavelengths. These winds would then effectively quench the photoionizing flux
very close to the stars. This can delay the onset of negative feedback by
photoionization and photodissociation on star formation in the clusters. This
is significant since SBS0335-052E resembles the conditions that were probably
common for high redshift star formation in galaxies near the epoch of

Health-state utilities in a prisoner population : a cross-sectional survey
Background: Health-state utilities for prisoners have not been described.
Methods: We used data from a 1996 cross-sectional survey of Australian prisoners (n = 734).
Respondent-level SF-36 data was transformed into utility scores by both the SF-6D and Nichol's
method. Socio-demographic and clinical predictors of SF-6D utility were assessed in univariate
analyses and a multivariate general linear model.
Results: The overall mean SF-6D utility was 0.725 (SD 0.119). When subdivided by various medical
conditions, prisoner SF-6D utilities ranged from 0.620 for angina to 0.764 for those with none/mild
depressive symptoms. Utilities derived by the Nichol's method were higher than SF-6D scores,
often by more than 0.1. In multivariate analysis, significant independent predictors of worse utility
included female gender, increasing age, increasing number of comorbidities and more severe
depressive symptoms.
Conclusion: The utilities presented may prove useful for future economic and decision models
evaluating prison-based health programs
Minding the Gap: Building Equitable, Accessible, and Sustainable Prison Education Programs in Pennsylvania
The reinstatement of Pell grant eligibility for incarcerated individuals marks a pivotal moment in the landscape of higher education in prison (HEP) programming in the United States. However, despite this promising development, financial barriers persist, hindering the growth and sustainability of HEP initiatives. This qualitative study delves into the challenges faced by faculty, staff, and administrators within Pennsylvania\u27s colleges and universities as they establish and operate HEP programs amidst an evolving funding environment. Drawing on interviews with nine HEP administrators across the state, we explore obstacles they confront, ranging from the Pell grant funding gap to logistical hurdles such as access to educational materials and technology. Moreover, demographic disparities and security concerns emerge as significant factors impacting the relationship between HEP programs and the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC). Our findings extend beyond financial constraints, revealing broader systemic barriers to equitable and accessible HEP programming. We provide potential policy solutions to address these multifaceted challenges and foster a more supportive institutional environment for post-secondary education in Pennsylvania\u27s carceral system

Mechanistic basis of an epistatic interaction reducing age at onset in hereditary spastic paraplegia
Many genetic neurological disorders exhibit variable expression within affected families, often exemplified by variations in disease age at onset. Epistatic effects (i.e. effects of modifier genes on the disease gene) may underlie this variation, but the mechanistic basis for such epistatic interactions is rarely understood. Here we report a novel epistatic interaction between SPAST and the contiguous gene DPY30, which modifies age at onset in hereditary spastic paraplegia, a genetic axonopathy. We found that patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia caused by genomic deletions of SPAST that extended into DPY30 had a significantly younger age at onset. We show that, like spastin, the protein encoded by SPAST, the DPY30 protein controls endosomal tubule fission, traffic of mannose 6-phosphate receptors from endosomes to the Golgi, and lysosomal ultrastructural morphology. demonstrates the necessity of temporal linkages to historical Black feminist texts and the wisdom of Black feminist
situated knowers. This paper argues that racism produces
grief and loss and as long as there is racism, we all remain
in racial grief and loss. However, in stark contrast to the
configuration of racial grief and loss as something to get
over, perhaps grief and loss can be thought about differently, for example, in terms of racial grief and loss as a
resource. This paper questions Western Eurocentric paternalistic responses to Black women’s ‘talk about their
feelings of craziness… [under] patriarchal rule’ (The
Combahee River Collective 1977: 262) and suggests
alternative ways of thinking about the psychological
impact of grief and loss in the context of racism. In this
paper, a Black feminist occupation of racial grief and loss
includes the act of residing within, and the act of working
with the constituent elements of racial grief and loss. The
proposal is that an occupation of racial grief and loss is a
paradoxical catalyst for building a twenty-first century
global intersectional Black feminist movement
Star Formation History of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field: Comparison with the HDFN
We use the NICMOS Treasury and ACS HUDF images to measure the extinction
corrected star formation history for 4681 galaxies in the region common to both
images utilizing the star formation rate distribution function and other
techniques similar to those employed with the NICMOS and WFPC2 images in the
HDFN. Unlike the HDFN the NICMOS region of the HUDF appears to lack highly
luminous and high star formation rate galaxies at redshifts beyond 3. The HUDF
provides a region that is completely uncorrelated to the HDFN and therefore
provides and independent measure of the star formation history of the universe.
The combined HUDF and HDFN star formation rates show an average star formation
rate of 0.2 solar masses per yer per cubic megaparsec. The average SFR of the
combined fields at z = 1-3 is 0.29 solar masses per year per cubic megaparsec
while the average at z = 4-6 is 1.2 solar masses per year per cubic megaparsec.
The SFRs at all redshifts are within 3 sigma of the average over all redshifts.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Primary succession of Bifidobacteria drives pathogen resistance in neonatal microbiota assembly
Human microbiota assembly commences at birth, seeded by both maternal and environmental microorganisms. Ecological theory postulates that primary colonizers dictate microbial community assembly outcomes, yet such microbial priority effects in the human gut remain underexplored. Here using longitudinal faecal metagenomics, we characterized neonatal microbiota assembly for a cohort of 1,288 neonates from the UK. We show that the pioneering neonatal gut microbiota can be stratified into one of three distinct community states, each dominated by a single microbial species and influenced by clinical and host factors, such as maternal age, ethnicity and parity. A community state dominated by Enterococcus faecalis displayed stochastic microbiota assembly with persistent high pathogen loads into infancy. In contrast, community states dominated by Bifidobacterium, specifically B. longum and particularly B. breve, exhibited a stable assembly trajectory and long-term pathogen colonization resistance, probably due to strain-specific functional adaptions to a breast milk-rich neonatal diet. Consistent with our human cohort observation, B. breve demonstrated priority effects and conferred pathogen colonization resistance in a germ-free mouse model.
