    Use of the turbulence kinetic energy equation in prediction of nonequilibrium turbulent boundary layers

    A differential method is proposed for the prediction of a broad range of turbulent boundary layers of engineering and scientific interest. A digital computer program is presented which is applicable to boundary layers with positive, negative, and zero pressure gradient in the main-stream direction as well as boundary layers with suction, blowing or zero mass addition at the wall. The turbulence kinetic energy equation is solved simultaneously with the longitudinal momentum and continuity equations to provide an independent means for determining the effective viscosity which makes allowance for history effects in the flow. It is shown that the prediction method may be easily extended to cover the energy and species equations when the need arises to predict boundary layers with thermal gradients and/or those comprised of a mixture of gases. Mathematical models have been found which adequately close the system of governing equations as evident by the successful prediction of the behavior of a wide range of equilibrium and non-equilibrium turbulent boundary layers --Abstract page ii

    Seven steps to successful change: How a large academic medical center prepared patients for organizational change

    Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) launched a new electronic health record (EHR) in a “big bang” implementation that saw the new software go live across multiple hospitals, clinics and geographic locations in a single morning. The organization rightly focused most of its energy on preparing its nearly 25,000 employees for the impacts of the transition, but it also considered the effects that would be felt by its patients and families. Survey data indicate that patient satisfaction scores demonstrably dip before, during and after an EHR implementation, and take approximately a year to recover. A team at DMC employed a seven-step approach to preparing patients for the impacts of the transition, which led to a return to pre-implementation patient satisfaction scores in about half the time of its peer institutions. The article explores these seven steps in detail and offers recommendations for how healthcare organizations facing large-scale change can use a similar structured approach to mitigate negative impacts to patients.     Chagas disease, a significant public health concern in the Americas, is caused by a protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. The life cycle of T. cruzi involves kissing bugs (Triatoma spp.) functioning as vectors and mammalian species serving as hosts. Raccoons (Procyon lotor) and opossums (Didelphis virginiana) have been identified as important reservoir species in the life cycle of T. cruzi, but prevalence in both species in the southeastern United States is currently understudied. We quantified T. cruzi prevalence in these two key reservoir species across our study area in South Carolina, USA, and identified factors that may influence parasite detection. We collected whole blood from 183 raccoons and 126 opossums and used PCR to detect the presence of T. cruzi. We then used generalized linear models with parasite detection status as a binary response variable and predictor variables of land cover, distance to water, sex, season, and species. Our analysis indicated that raccoons experienced significantly higher parasite detection rates than Virginia opossums, with T. cruzi prevalence found to be 26.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 20.0–33.8) in raccoons and 10.5% (95% CI, 5.51–17.5) in opossums. Overall, our results concur with previous studies, in that T. cruzi is established in reservoir host populations in natural areas of the southeastern United States
