Use of a variable exposure photographic pyrometer to measure surface temperatures on a hemispherical-face model
The use of a photographic pyrometer for nonintrusive measurement of high temperature surfaces in a wind tunnel test is described. The advantages of the pyrometer for measuring surfaces whose unique shape makes use of thermocouples difficult are pointed out. The use of computer operated densitometers or optical processors for the data reduction is recommended
Semiclassical mechanics of a non-integrable spin cluster
We study detailed classical-quantum correspondence for a cluster system of
three spins with single-axis anisotropic exchange coupling. With autoregressive
spectral estimation, we find oscillating terms in the quantum density of states
caused by classical periodic orbits: in the slowly varying part of the density
of states we see signs of nontrivial topology changes happening to the energy
surface as the energy is varied. Also, we can explain the hierarchy of quantum
energy levels near the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states with EKB
quantization to explain large structures and tunneling to explain small
structures.Comment: 9 pages. For related works see

The Off Shell - Mixing in the QCD Sum Rules
The dependence of the mixing amplitude is analyzed with
the use of the QCD sum rules and the dispersion relation. Going off shell the
mixing decreases, changes sign at and is
negative in the space like region. Implications of this result to the isospin
breaking part of the nuclear force are discussed.Comment: 26 pages + 11 figures (PostScript
Model Analysis of Time Reversal Symmetry Test in the Caltech Fe-57 Gamma-Transition Experiment
The CALTECH gamma-transition experiment testing time reversal symmetry via
the E2/M1 mulipole mixing ratio of the 122 keV gamma-line in Fe-57 has already
been performed in 1977. Extending an earlier analysis in terms of an effective
one-body potential, this experiment is now analyzed in terms of effective one
boson exchange T-odd P-even nucleon nucleon potentials. Within the model space
considered for the Fe-57 nucleus no contribution from isovector rho-type
exchange is possible. The bound on the coupling strength phi_A from effective
short range axial-vector type exchange induced by the experimental bound on
sin(eta) leads to phi_A < 10^{-2}.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex 3.
Ornithine decarboxylase activity during development of the mouse inner ear in vivo and in vitro
Ornithine decarboxylase activity was determined during the development of the peripheral auditory system in the murine otocyst with the goal of understanding the role of this enzyme in the morphological and functional maturation of the inner ear. At gestational days 11 and 12 enzyme activity was more than 10-fold higher than adult levels. A sharp decline occured between day 12 and 13 after which activity rose to a peak around day 15. Activity then dropped continuously until near-adult levels were reached at birth. A lower specific activity of ODC but a similar time-course was seen in otocysts explanted at gestational day 13 and subsequently cultured for 6 days. For two stages of development, enzyme activity and binding of 3 H-α-difluoromethylornithine were compared. The four-fold difference in enzymatic activity on gestational days 15 and 17 was paralleled by a similar difference in binding. Ornithine decarboxylase activity during inner ear development therefore seems primarily regulated at the level of protein synthesis. Ornithine decarboxylase activity correlates with major inductive events in the morphogenesis of the cartilagenous otic capsule that serves as a template for the formation of the bony labyrinth. The pattern of activity may reflect the changes in the head mesenchyme that is recruited by the otocyst to aggregate and form its protective otic capsule.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47689/1/441_2004_Article_BF00340878.pd
Nuclear Anapole Moments
Nuclear anapole moments are parity-odd, time-reversal-even E1 moments of the
electromagnetic current operator. Although the existence of this moment was
recognized theoretically soon after the discovery of parity nonconservation
(PNC), its experimental isolation was achieved only recently, when a new level
of precision was reached in a measurement of the hyperfine dependence of atomic
PNC in 133Cs. An important anapole moment bound in 205Tl also exists. In this
paper, we present the details of the first calculation of these anapole moments
in the framework commonly used in other studies of hadronic PNC, a meson
exchange potential that includes long-range pion exchange and enough degrees of
freedom to describe the five independent amplitudes induced by
short-range interactions. The resulting contributions of pi-, rho-, and
omega-exchange to the single-nucleon anapole moment, to parity admixtures in
the nuclear ground state, and to PNC exchange currents are evaluated, using
configuration-mixed shell-model wave functions. The experimental anapole moment
constraints on the PNC meson-nucleon coupling constants are derived and
compared with those from other tests of the hadronic weak interaction. While
the bounds obtained from the anapole moment results are consistent with the
broad ``reasonable ranges'' defined by theory, they are not in good agreement
with the constraints from the other experiments. We explore possible
explanations for the discrepancy and comment on the potential importance of new
experiments.Comment: 53 pages; 10 figures; revtex; submitted to Phys Rev
Effects of T- and P-odd weak nucleon interaction in nuclei: renormalizations due to residual strong interaction, matrix elements between compound states and their correlations with P-violating matrix elements
Manifestations of P-,T-odd weak interaction between nucleons in nucleus are
considered. Renormalization of this interaction due to residual strong
interaction is studied. Mean squared matrix elements of P-,T-odd weak
interaction between compound states are calculated. Correlators between
P-,T-odd and P-odd, T-even weak interaction matrix elements between compound
states are considered and estimates for these quantities are obtained.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. C; 21 pages, REVTEX 3, no figure
Foldwatch:using origami-inspired paper prototypes to explore the extension of output space in smartwatches
Smartwatches are highly portable, ubiquitous devices, allowing rich interaction at a small scale. However, the display size can hinder user engagement, limit information display, and presentation style. Most research focuses on exploring ways in which the interaction area of smartwatches can be extended, although this mainly entails simple fold-out displays or additional screens. Conversely, added weight and size can hinder the wearable experience. In response, we took inspiration from origami and explored the design space for new types of lightweight, highly foldable smartwatch, by developing complex paper-prototypes which demonstrate novel ways of extending screen space. We collected data on potential input and output interaction with complex folded smartwatch displays during workshops with expert and non-expert users, discovering application ideas and additional input/output functionality. These insights were used to produce and evaluate a concept video for the FoldWatch prototype
