The isothermal fatigue behavior of a unidirectional SiC/Ti composite and the Ti alloy matrix
The high temperature fatigue behavior of a metal matrix composite (MMC) consisting of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) matrix reinforced by 33 vol percent of continuous unidirectional SiC fibers was experimentally and analytically evaluated. Isothermal MMC fatigue tests with constant amplitude loading parallel to the fiber direction were performed at 300 and 550 C. Comparative fatigue tests of the Ti-15-3 matrix alloy were also conducted. Composite fatigue behavior and the in-situ stress state of the fiber and matrix were analyzed with a micromechanical model, the Concentric Cylinder Model (CCM). The cyclic stress-strain response of the composite was stable at 300 C. However, an increase in cyclic mean strain foreshortened MMC fatigue life at high strain ranges at 550 C. Fatigue tests of the matrix alloy and CCM analyses indicated this response was associated with stress relaxation of the matrix in the composite
Ground Heave Due to Pile Driving
The factors which influence ground heave due to pile driving outside the construction site are discussed. Elevation survey data are presented for nine case studies in the Boston area where the subsoil conditions consist of an insensitive clay deposit in the range of 60 to 110 feet thick. Curves of heave vs. normalized distance exhibit a trend of increasing heave with increased volumetric displacement ratio. Patterns of ground heave typically occur as radially shaped contours decreasing in magnitude away from pile driving. Building and ground movements observed several years after completion of pile driving indicate that the heave is temporary, and is followed by a net settlement. Eight factors which influence heave due to pile driving are briefly discussed. Pile driving can be designed to minimize or prevent heave by properly planning the methods and sequence of pile installation
Nonlinear Asymptotic Integration Algorithms for One-dimensional Autonomous Dissipative First-order Odes
Nonlinear asymptotic integrators are applied to one-dimensional, nonlinear, autonomous, dissipative, ordinary differential equations. These integrators, including a one-step explicit, a one-step implicit, and a one- and two-step midpoint algorithm, are designed to follow the asymptotic behavior of a system approaching a steady state. The methods require that the differential equation be written in a particular asymptotic form. This is always possible for a one-dimensional equation with a globally asymptotic steady state. In this case, conditions are obtained to guarantee that the implicit algorithms are well defined. Further conditions are determined for the implicit methods to be contractive. These methods are all first order accurate, while under certain conditions the midpoint algorithms may also become second order accurate. The stability of each method is investigated and an estimate of the local error is provided
Massive Supersymmetric Quantum Gauge Theory
We continue the study of the supersymmetric vector multiplet in a purely
quantum framework. We obtain some new results which make the connection with
the standard literature. First we construct the one-dimensional physical
Hilbert space taking into account the (quantum) gauge structure of the model.
Then we impose the condition of positivity for the scalar product only on the
physical Hilbert space. Finally we obtain a full supersymmetric coupling which
is gauge invariant in the supersymmetric sense in the first order of
perturbation theory. By integrating out the Grassmann variables we get an
interacting Lagrangian for a massive Yang-Mills theory related to ordinary
gauge theory; however the number of ghost fields is doubled so we do not obtain
the same ghost couplings as in the standard model Lagrangian.Comment: 13 pages, no figure
Brownian Motion and Polymer Statistics on Certain Curved Manifolds
We have calculated the probability distribution function G(R,L|R',0) of the
end-to-end vector R-R' and the mean-square end-to-end distance (R-R')^2 of a
Gaussian polymer chain embedded on a sphere S^(D-1) in D dimensions and on a
cylinder, a cone and a curved torus in 3-D.
We showed that: surface curvature induces a geometrical localization area; at
short length the polymer is locally "flat" and (R-R')^2 = L l in all cases; at
large scales, (R-R')^2 is constant for the sphere, it is linear in L for the
cylinder and reaches different constant values for the torus. The cone vertex
induces (function of opening angle and R') contraction of the chain for all
lengths. Explicit crossover formulas are derived.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, RevTex, uses amssymb.sty and multicol.sty, to

Instanton Calculations for N=1/ 2 super Yang-Mills Theory
We study (anti-) instantons in super Yang-Mills theories defined on a non
anticommutative superspace. The instanton solution that we consider is the same
as in ordinary SU(2) N=1 super Yang-Mills, but the anti-instanton receives
corrections to the U(1) part of the connection which depend quadratically on
fermionic coordinates, and linearly on the deformation parameter C. By
substituting the exact solution into the classical Lagrangian the topological
charge density receives a new contribution which is quadratic in C and quartic
in the fermionic zero-modes. The topological charge turns out to be zero. We
perform an expansion around the exact classical solution in presence of a
fermionic background and calculate the full superdeterminant contributing to
the one-loop partition function. We find that the one-loop partition function
is not modified with respect to the usual N=1 super Yang-Mills.Comment: 27 pages, harmvac, Redone the computation of topological charge, a

D-brane anomaly inflow revisited
Axial and gravitational anomaly of field theories, when embedded in string
theory, must be accompanied by canceling inflow. We give a self-contained
overview for various world-volume theories, and clarify the role of smeared
magnetic sources in I-brane/D-brane cases. The proper anomaly descent of the
source, as demanded by regularity of RR field strengths H's, turns out to be an
essential ingredient. We show how this allows correct inflow to be generated
for all such theories, including self-dual cases, and also that the mechanism
is now insensitive to the choice between the two related but inequivalent forms
of D-brane Chern-Simons couplings. In particular, SO(6)_R axial anomaly of d=4
maximal SYM is canceled by the inflow onto D3-branes via the standard minimal
coupling to C_4. We also propose how, for the anomaly cancelation, the four
types of Orientifold planes should be coupled to the spacetime curvatures, of
which conflicting claims existed previously.Comment: 41 pages, references updated; version to appear in JHE
BPS black holes, the Hesse potential, and the topological string
The Hesse potential is constructed for a class of four-dimensional N=2
supersymmetric effective actions with S- and T-duality by performing the
relevant Legendre transform by iteration. It is a function of fields that
transform under duality according to an arithmetic subgroup of the classical
dualities reflecting the monodromies of the underlying string compactification.
These transformations are not subject to corrections, unlike the
transformations of the fields that appear in the effective action which are
affected by the presence of higher-derivative couplings. The class of actions
that are considered includes those of the FHSV and the STU model. We also
consider heterotic N=4 supersymmetric compactifications. The Hesse potential,
which is equal to the free energy function for BPS black holes, is manifestly
duality invariant. Generically it can be expanded in terms of powers of the
modulus that represents the inverse topological string coupling constant,
, and its complex conjugate. The terms depending holomorphically on
are expected to correspond to the topological string partition function and
this expectation is explicitly verified in two cases. Terms proportional to
mixed powers of and are in principle present.Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX, added comment
