    Job Quality and Job Satisfaction Among Casino Workers: The Case of Foxwoods

    This article examines the quality of casino jobs at the largest Indian casino in the United States. It uses survey responses to measure how Foxwoods\u27 employees evaluate various aspects of their jobs, and it also considers other aspects of job quality such as wages, fringe benefits, and wage inequality. The results are part of the growing literature that considers issues important to the gaming industry in the United States

    University Presidents\u27 Perspectives of the Knowledge and Competencies Needed in 21st Century Higher Education Leadership

    The purpose of this study was to identify the core knowledge and competencies needed for executive leadership in higher education administration as perceived by university presidents. Thirteen presidents shared the knowledge and competencies they perceived as being essential for an effective presidency. The respondents identified the important knowledge areas as: foundational; acquisition of cultural knowledge; and complex cognitive. They viewed personal attributes, management, and communications as the essential competency areas. The study found that presidents viewed themselves both as leaders and as managers. Results of this study should be helpful to organizations seeking to develop and/or implement degree programs to prepare individuals for the presidency. The results may also be helpful to those seeking to provide professional development materials and activities to prepare or develop individuals for this role

    The great horned owl and its prey in north-central United States

    Along with other predatory species, the great horned owl has been studied in north-central United States, particularly in Iowa and southern Wisconsin localities in which ecological research upon certain prey types has been carried on contemporaneously. After investigation by field and laboratory methods involving experimentation with captive horned owls and observation in nature, it became obvious that the mass data on feeding trends required by the program could be best obtained through pellet studies supplemented by whatever additional techniques would yield information. The horned owl food habits data upon which this bulletin is partly based were gathered largely between 1930 and 1935 and were the product of experience with 84 horned owl nests, examination of 4,815 pellets and 23 food-containing stomachs and records of direct predation. The prey types studied were chiefly upland game birds, waterfowl and fur-bearers, though many other forms were observed incidentally. The general procedure was to continue, so far as feasible, work on predation and population year after year on specific areas and to correlate the data from both; in this way, not only have some of the reasons for pronounced changes in food habits of predators become evident, but a superior background for evaluating effects of predation upon population levels of prey species has also resulted

    Two-dimensional protein crystallization via metal-ion coordination by naturally occurring surface histidines

    A powerful and potentially general approach to the targeting and crystallization of proteins on lipid interfaces through coordination of surface histidine residues to lipid-chelated divalent metal ions is presented. This approach, which should be applicable to the crystallization of a wide range of naturally occurring or engineered proteins, is illustrated here by the crystallization of streptavidin on a monolayer of an iminodiacetate-Cu(II) lipid spread at the air-water interface. This method allows control of the protein orientation at interfaces, which is significant for the facile production of highly ordered protein arrays and for electron density mapping in structural analysis of two-dimensional crystals. Binding of native streptavidin to the iminodiacetate-Cu lipids occurs via His-87, located on the protein surface near the biotin binding pocket. The two-dimensional streptavidin crystals show a previously undescribed microscopic shape that differs from that of crystals formed beneath biotinylated lipids
