European consumers' valuation for hybrid meat: Does information matter?
This study investigates for the first time how the use of different information messages (i.e., health, sensory, and convenience benefits) about hybrid meat shapes British, Spanish, and Danish consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) for such products. Hybrid meats are products whereby a proportion of the meat has been replaced by plant-based proteins. Using a choice experiment (CE) involving hybrid burgers that vary across four attributes (i.e., ingredient, fat content, Carbon Trust label, and price), our results show that consumers are generally not yet willing to pay a premium for such new products. Furthermore, we found that consumer valuation for hybrid burgers strongly depends on the type of information provided and consumer characteristics. These findings provide useful guidelines on how information can be used in communicating the nature of the hybrid meats to the public in a cross-country context
Actual implementation of sick children's rights in Italian pediatric units: a descriptive study based on nurses' perceptions
BACKGROUND: Several charters of rights have been issued in Europe to solemnly proclaim the rights of children during their hospital stay. However, notwithstanding such general declarations, the actual implementation of hospitalized children’s rights is unclear. The purpose of this study was to understand to which extent such rights, as established by the two main existing charters of rights, are actually implemented and respected in Italian pediatric hospitals and the pediatric units of Italian general hospitals, as perceived by the nurses working in them. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. A 12-item online questionnaire was set up and an invitation was sent by email to Italian pediatric nurses using professional mailing lists and social networks. Responders were asked to score to what extent each right is respected in their hospital using a numeric scale from 1 (never) to 5 (always). RESULTS: 536 questionnaires were returned. The best implemented right is the right of children to have their mothers with them (mean score 4.47). The least respected one is the right of children to express their opinion about care (mean 3.01). Other rights considered were the right to play (4.29), the right to be informed (3.95), the right to the respect of privacy (3.75), the right to be hospitalized with peers (3.39), the right not to experience pain ever (3.41), and the right to school (3.07). According to the majority of nurses, the most important is the right to pain relief. Significant differences in the implementation of rights were found between areas of Italy and between pediatric hospitals and pediatric units of general hospitals. CONCLUSION: According to the perception of pediatric nurses, the implementation of the rights of hospitalized children in Italian pediatrics units is still limited
Hard X-ray emission from the galaxy cluster A3667
We report the results of a long BeppoSAX observation of Abell 3667, one of
the most spectacular galaxy cluster in the southern sky. A clear detection of
hard X-ray radiation up to ~ 35 keV is reported, while a hard excess above the
thermal gas emission is present at a marginal level that should be considered
as an upper limit to the presence of nonthermal radiation. The strong hard
excesses reported by BeppoSAX in Coma and A2256 and the only marginal detection
of nonthermal emission in A3667 can be explained in the framework of the
inverse Compton model. We argue that the nonthermal X-ray detections in the PDS
energy range are related to the radio index structure of halos and relics

Foraminifera, Thecamoebians and Palynomorphs as Hydrodynamic Indicators in Araguari Estuary, Amazonian Coast, Amapá State – Brazil
The Araguari estuarine dynamics is singular among traditional models of estuaries under tidal regime due to influence of macrotidal and tidal bore. In order to establish estuarine zones in Araguari according foraminifera, thecamoebians, paliynomorphs and physical-chemistry parameters, sixteen sample stations were established along the estuary. Turbidity and temperature were the environmental parameters which allowed determination of the estuarine gradient. Eighteen species of foraminifera, ten of thecamoebians and fourteen of particulate organic matter types were identified. Cluster analysis in R-mode showed three microorganism assemblages and four palynomorph ones. The CCA analyze shows turbidity and total organic matter with the most influence over foraminiferal and thecamoebians distribution at Araguari. Clustering analysis in Q-mode using all data formed four groups suggesting three estuarine zones in Araguari: Zone I composed of thecamoebian species and continental palynomorphs; Zone II - composed by mangrove foraminifera, thecamoebians and all palynomorph assemblages; and Zone III – composed by mangrove and estuarine foraminifera and all palynomorph assemblages
Instability of black hole formation under small pressure perturbations
We investigate here the spectrum of gravitational collapse endstates when
arbitrarily small perfect fluid pressures are introduced in the classic black
hole formation scenario as described by Oppenheimer, Snyder and Datt (OSD) [1].
This extends a previous result on tangential pressures [2] to the more
physically realistic scenario of perfect fluid collapse. The existence of
classes of pressure perturbations is shown explicitly, which has the property
that injecting any smallest pressure changes the final fate of the dynamical
collapse from a black hole to a naked singularity. It is therefore seen that
any smallest neighborhood of the OSD model, in the space of initial data,
contains collapse evolutions that go to a naked singularity outcome. This gives
an intriguing insight on the nature of naked singularity formation in

Nanoscale spin rectifiers controlled by the Stark effect
The control of orbital and spin state of single electrons is a key ingredient
for quantum information processing, novel detection schemes, and, more
generally, is of much relevance for spintronics. Coulomb and spin blockade (SB)
in double quantum dots (DQDs) enable advanced single-spin operations that would
be available even for room-temperature applications for sufficiently small
devices. To date, however, spin operations in DQDs were observed at sub-Kelvin
temperatures, a key reason being that scaling a DQD system while retaining an
independent field-effect control on the individual dots is very challenging.
Here we show that quantum-confined Stark effect allows an independent
addressing of two dots only 5 nm apart with no need for aligned nanometer-size
local gating. We thus demonstrate a scalable method to fully control a DQD
device, regardless of its physical size. In the present implementation we show
InAs/InP nanowire (NW) DQDs that display an experimentally detectable SB up to
10 K. We also report and discuss an unexpected re-entrant SB lifting as a
function magnetic-field intensity
The role of dedicated instrumentation in total hip arthroplasty
Tissue-sparing surgery is a surgical strategy aimed to reduce tissue damage in joint replacement. This can be achieved by reducing soft tissue trauma, performing minimally invasive access routes and limiting bone removal with implantation of conservative prostheses. In order to facilitate mini-approaches, special instrumentation was developed to avoid impingement of the soft tissues and provide an easier and more correct placement of the components. We performed an analysis of the literature and a research of the instrumentation available today, to evaluate the actual utility of dedicated tools
The First Provenance Challenge
The first Provenance Challenge was set up in order to provide a forum for the community to help understand the capabilities of different provenance systems and the expressiveness of their provenance representations. To this end, a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging workflow was defined, which participants had to either simulate or run in order to produce some provenance representation, from which a set of identified queries had to be implemented and executed. Sixteen teams responded to the challenge, and submitted their inputs. In this paper, we present the challenge workflow and queries, and summarise the participants contributions
Genome-wide association study identifies an early onset pancreatic cancer risk locus
Early onset pancreatic cancer (EOPC) is a rare disease with a very high mortality rate. Almost nothing is known on the genetic susceptibility of EOPC, therefore we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify novel genetic variants specific for patients diagnosed with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) at younger ages. In the first phase, conducted on 821 cases with age of onset ≤60 years, of whom 198 with age of onset ≤50, and 3227 controls from PanScan I-II, we observed four SNPs (rs7155613, rs2328991, rs4891017 and rs12610094) showing an association with EOPC risk (P < 1x10-4 ). We replicated these SNPs in the PANcreatic Disease ReseArch (PANDoRA) consortium and used additional in silico data from PanScan III and PanC4. Among these four variants rs2328991 was significant in an independent set of 855 cases with age of onset ≤60 years, of whom 265 with age of onset≤50, and 4142 controls from the PANDoRA consortium while in the in silico data we observed no statistically significant association. However, the resulting meta-analysis supported the association (P = 1.15x10-4 ). In conclusion we propose a novel variant rs2328991 to be involved in EOPC risk. Even though it was not possible to find a mechanistic link between the variant and the function, the association is supported by a solid statistical significance obtained in the largest study on EOPC genetics present so far in the literature.
