Probing the position of the Jakarta metropolitan area in global inter-urban networks through the lens of manufacturing firms
This paper presents an analysis of the position of the Jakarta metropolitan area (JMA) in global inter-urban networks. Our starting point is our aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of the JMAâs connectivity in world city networks (WCNs). To this end, we steer clear of top-down approaches, which tend to analyze cities in singular taxonomies of global prominence, and instead propose a framework that is attuned to the JMAâs contexts to provide an alternative and complementary reading of how the JMA has been inserted into the WCN. To this end, by drawing on the interlocking network model, which helps to proxy inter-urban networks based on the multi-locational operations of manufacturing firms, we examine the JMAâs network positionality on the global and national scales. The results provide evidence of the JMAâs global inter-city relations being strongly geared toward East Asian cities. In addition, the results suggest that the JMA cannot be detached from its national geography, as evidenced by its strong connections with cities located on the island of Java

The Five Foundations of Leadership in Japan\u27s Lodging Industry
This article discusses the results of pioneer research done by Michigan State University\u27s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management researchers, in cooperation with the Japanese Management Association, on the foundations of Japanese lodging industry leadership. While the results presented here simply represent the opinions of CEOs and presidents in Japan\u27s lodging industry, the research offers an insight into leadership foundations and the results provide a guide for developing leadership skills in those who aspire to be future leaders in Japanâs lodging industr
New IT Business Models in the "Asian Age" - Multilateral Collaboration and Business Innovation
China, after its implementation of foreign direct investment policy in December 1978, has continued to receive investments from international companies, and this has been one of the primary driving engines behind the Asian business development. Electronics products originating either from U.S.A. or Europe have experienced tremendous industry shifts to the Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China. This paper examines, from the general perspective, the recent development of the Asian electronics industry and business models focusing on the personal computers and mobile communication products. Based on the analysis of the basic characteristics of the business models developed in Asia, future strategic directions for Japanese firms in the âAsian Ageâ will be discussed. Due to the interconnected global environment, the competition field has increasingly become leveled out. In the light of the global nature of the playing field, a multilateral collaboration approach will be emphasized and a complementary relationship will be sought.IT Business; "Asian Age"; China; Multilateral Collaboration
Persistence of Natural Disasters on Children's Health: Evidence from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923
This study uses a catastrophic earthquake in 1923 to analyze the long-term
effects of a one-off disaster on children's health. I find that fetal exposure
to Japan's Great Kanto Earthquake had stunting effects on girls in the
devastated area. Disaster relief spending helped remediate stunting among boys
by late primary school ages, whereas it did not ameliorate girls' stunting,
suggesting a biased remediation mechanism before birth and compensating
investment after birth. While the maternal mental stress via strong vibrations
played a role in the adverse health effects, the maternal nutritional stress
via physical disruption also enhanced those effects
Integrated Transport System Toward Sustainable Travel Behavior for Work Commuting Travel From Bekasi to Jakarta
Due to the inadequacy of public transport and high critical level of congestion in Jakarta Metropolitan Area, implementing sustainable transport for urban future transport improvement is necessary. Critical transport situation in Jakarta Metropolitan Area has pointed the importance of implementation integrated transport system to increase people accessibility. This study is conducted to identify strategic issues in integrated transport system at operational and policy levels toward sustainable mobility, transport equity, and door to door service. According to research aim, explanatory case study is used to build an understanding the current situation. The results indicate that integrated transport system is not fully implemented yet and it found a lot of missing links and barriers in integrated transport system attributes. Moreover, transportation planning at national to local levels is not synchronous which have impacted to the implementation of integrated transport

Japanese martial arts (JMA) practice is an effective wellbeing strategy in post-COVID: a qualitative appraisal
This study aimed to examine the experiences of Japanese martial arts (JMA) practitioners during the COVID-19 to understand how JMA impacted on their mental wellbeing. Using online semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, we explored the first-hand experiences of JMA practitioners in COVID-19 regarding their mental wellbeing. 12 practitioners were recruited through the researchersâ network. Two research questions were established, exploring the impact of COVID-19 on their wellbeing (RQ1), and how JMA helped their mental wellbeing (RQ2). Four themes were identified. Theme 1 âLittle impact on JMA practitionersâ wellbeing (responding to RQ1)â; Theme 2 âJMA training as a coping mechanism (RQ2)â; Theme 3 âSelf-mastery and self-development (RQ2)â, and Theme 4 âSelf-reflection (RQ2)â. Our findings suggest JMA practitioners maintained good mental wellbeing during the stressful pandemic time. Mental wellbeing benefits of JMA may be summarised as âself-careâ, as self-mastery, self-development, and self-reflection were reported by the participants. These benefits may lead to better coping. Longitudinal and mixed-method research is needed to better understand their experiences
