Colliding-wind binary systems: Diffusive shock acceleration and non-thermal emission
We present a model for the non-thermal emission from a colliding-wind binary. Relativistic protons and electrons are assumed to be accelerated through diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at the global shocks bounding the wind-wind collision region. The non-linear effects of the back-reaction due to the cosmic ray pressure on the particle acceleration process and the cooling of the non-thermal particles as they flow downstream from the shocks are included. We explore how the non-thermal particle distribution and the keV−GeV emission changes with the stellar separation and the viewing angle of the system, and with the momentum ratio of the winds. We confirm earlier findings that DSA is very efficient when magnetic field amplification is not included, leading to significantly modified shocks. We also find that the non-thermal flux scales with the binary separation in a complicated way and that the anisotropic inverse Compton emission shows only a moderate variation with viewing angle due to the spatial extent of the wind-wind collision
Reversible DNA micro-patterning using the fluorous effect
We describe a new method for the immobilisation of DNA into defined patterns with sub-micron resolution, using the fluorous effect. The method is fully reversible via a simple solvent wash, allowing the patterning, regeneration and re-patterning of surfaces with no degradation in binding efficiency following multiple removal/attachment cycles of different DNA sequences
A Kind of Affine Weighted Moment Invariants
A new kind of geometric invariants is proposed in this paper, which is called
affine weighted moment invariant (AWMI). By combination of local affine
differential invariants and a framework of global integral, they can more
effectively extract features of images and help to increase the number of
low-order invariants and to decrease the calculating cost. The experimental
results show that AWMIs have good stability and distinguishability and achieve
better results in image retrieval than traditional moment invariants. An
extension to 3D is straightforward
Antikaon production in nucleon-nucleon reactions near threshold
The antikaon production cross section from nucleon-nucleon reactions near
threshold is studied in a meson exchange model. We include both pion and kaon
exchange, but neglect the interference between the amplitudes. In case of pion
exchange the antikaon production cross section can be expressed in terms of the
antikaon production cross section from a pion-nucleon interaction, which we
take from the experimental data if available. Otherwise, a -resonance
exchange model is introduced to relate the different reaction cross sections.
In case of kaon exchange the antikaon production cross section is related to
the elastic and cross sections, which are again taken from
experimental measurements. We find that the one-meson exchange model gives a
satisfactory fit to the available data for the cross section
at high energies. We compare our predictions for the cross section near
threshold with an earlier empirical parameterization and that from phase space
models.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 5 postscript figures included, submitted to Z. Phys.
Mechanical Systems with Symmetry, Variational Principles, and Integration Algorithms
This paper studies variational principles for mechanical systems with symmetry and their applications to integration algorithms. We recall some general features of how to reduce variational principles in the presence of a symmetry group along with general features of integration algorithms for mechanical systems. Then we describe some integration algorithms based directly on variational principles using a
discretization technique of Veselov. The general idea for these variational integrators is to directly discretize Hamilton’s principle rather than the equations of motion in a way that preserves the original systems invariants, notably the symplectic form and, via a discrete version of Noether’s theorem, the momentum map. The resulting mechanical integrators are second-order accurate, implicit, symplectic-momentum algorithms. We apply these integrators to the rigid body and the double spherical pendulum to show that the techniques are competitive with existing integrators
The Mass Function of Newly Formed Stars (Review)
The topic of the stellar "original mass function" has a nearly 50 year
history, dating to the publication in 1955 of Salpeter's seminal paper. In this
review I discuss the many more recent results that have emerged on the initial
mass function (IMF), as it is now called, from studies over the last decade of
resolved populations in star forming regions and young open clusters.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure; to appear in "The Dense Instellar Medium in

Particle acceleration and non-thermal emission in colliding-wind binary systems
We present a model for the creation of non-thermal particles via diffusive shock acceleration in a colliding-wind binary. Our model accounts for the oblique nature of the global shocks bounding the wind–wind collision region and the finite velocity of the scattering centres to the gas. It also includes magnetic field amplification by the cosmic ray induced streaming instability and the dynamical back reaction of the amplified field. We assume that the injection of the ions and electrons is independent of the shock obliquity and that the scattering centres move relative to the fluid at the Alfvén velocity (resulting in steeper non-thermal particle distributions). We find that the Mach number, Alfvénic Mach number, and transverse field strength vary strongly along and between the shocks, resulting in significant and non-linear variations in the particle acceleration efficiency and shock nature (turbulent versus non-turbulent). We find much reduced compression ratios at the oblique shocks in most of our models compared to our earlier work, though total gas compression ratios that exceed 20 can still be obtained in certain situations. We also investigate the dependence of the non-thermal emission on the stellar separation and determine when emission from secondary electrons becomes important. We finish by applying our model to WR 146, one of the brightest colliding wind binaries in the radio band. We are able to match the observed radio emission and find that roughly 30 per cent of the wind power at the shocks is channelled into non-thermal particles

A Diabetes Psychosocial Profile
An educational needs assessment instrument for individuals with diabetes has been developed at the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center. Responses to the 110-item questionnaire provide subscores on con structs labeled "Control Problems, " "Psychosocial Impact," "Barriers to Compliance, " "Benefits of Regimen, " "Regimen Complexity," and "Risk of Complications." Com bined with demographic and clinical information, these scores form a com prehensive summary of the patient's attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and knowledge in relation to diabetes. This summary is in the form of an individ ualized graphic profile that highlights possible prob lem areas to be consid ered when developing patient education and management plans.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68817/2/10.1177_014572178601200210.pd
Holographic fermions in charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole
We study the properties of the Green's functions of the fermions in charged
Gauss-Bonnet black hole. What we want to do is to investigate how the presence
of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant affects the dispersion relation,
which is a characteristic of Fermi or non-Fermi liquid, as well as what
properties such a system has, for instance, the Particle-hole (a)symmetry. One
important result of this research is that we find for , the behavior of
this system is different from that of the Landau Fermi liquid and so the system
can be candidates for holographic dual of generalized non-Fermi liquids. More
importantly, the behavior of this system increasingly similar to that of the
Landau Fermi liquid when is approaching its lower bound. Also we find
that this system possesses the Particle-hole asymmetry when , another
important characteristic of this system. In addition, we also investigate
briefly the cases of the charge dependence.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; version published in JHE
