    Solar wind speed theory and the nonextensivity of solar corona

    The solar corona is a complex system, with nonisothermal plasma and being in the self-gravitating field of the Sun. So the corona plasma is not only a nonequilibrium system but also a nonextensive one. We estimate the parameter of describing the degree of nonextensivity of the corona plasma and study the generalization of the solar wind speed theory in the framework of nonextensive statistical mechanics.     Transient electrothermal simulation of power semiconductor devices

    In this paper, a new thermal model based on the Fourier series solution of heat conduction equation has been introduced in detail. 1-D and 2-D Fourier series thermal models have been programmed in MATLAB/Simulink. Compared with the traditional finite-difference thermal model and equivalent RC thermal network, the new thermal model can provide high simulation speed with high accuracy, which has been proved to be more favorable in dynamic thermal characterization on power semiconductor switches. The complete electrothermal simulation models of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and power diodes under inductive load switching condition have been successfully implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. The experimental results on IGBT and power diodes with clamped inductive load switching tests have verified the new electrothermal simulation model. The advantage of Fourier series thermal model over widely used equivalent RC thermal network in dynamic thermal characterization has also been validated by the measured junction temperature

    Metabolic markers as possible diagnostic tools to distinguish between Gram positive and Gram negative septicaemia in baboons

    Septicemia is a disease with high mortality and morbidity. Most patients die within 48 h after infection because directed treatment can only start after the bacterium is identified as gram positive or gram negative. This may take up to 72 h. Early identification of the causative pathogen can therefore decrease the high mortality rate following infection. The aim was to identify possible metabolic markers of gram positive and gram negative septicemia in appropriately infected baboons. Ten baboons,anaesthetised with ketamine hydrochloride and pentobarbitone for 24 h, were used in this pilot study. Blood and urine samples were collected at various intervals during the 24 h. Four baboons were inoculated with S. pyogenes H305 and four with E. coli O111:B4. Two baboons served as controls. Acyl carnitine, amino acids, organic acids, very long chain fatty acids, glucose, pyruvate and lactate were measured in blood plasma and in urine using standardised methods. No metabolic markers could distinguish between gram positive and gram negative septicemia. α-Amino-adipic acid, citramalic acid and xanthurenic acid, produced only by bacteria, show promise. Alanine and glycine increased significantly over 24 h and can be used as diagnostic markers and perhaps as markers of disease progression.     Differentiation of Human Embryonic Stem Cells into Cells with Corneal Keratocyte Phenotype

    Corneal transparency depends on a unique extracellular matrix secreted by stromal keratocytes, mesenchymal cells of neural crest lineage. Derivation of keratocytes from human embryonic stem (hES) cells could elucidate the keratocyte developmental pathway and open a potential for cell-based therapy for corneal blindness. This study seeks to identify conditions inducing differentiation of pluripotent hES cells to the keratocyte lineage. Neural differentiation of hES cell line WA01(H1) was induced by co-culture with mouse PA6 fibroblasts. After 6 days of co-culture, hES cells expressing cell-surface NGFR protein (CD271, p75NTR) were isolated by immunoaffinity adsorption, and cultured as a monolayer for one week. Keratocyte phenotype was induced by substratum-independent pellet culture in serum-free medium containing ascorbate. Gene expression, examined by quantitative RT-PCR, found hES cells co-cultured with PA6 cells for 6 days to upregulate expression of neural crest genes including NGFR, SNAI1, NTRK3, SOX9, and MSX1. Isolated NGFR-expressing cells were free of PA6 feeder cells. After expansion as a monolayer, mRNAs typifying adult stromal stem cells were detected, including BMI1, KIT, NES, NOTCH1, and SIX2. When these cells were cultured as substratum-free pellets keratocyte markers AQP1, B3GNT7, PTDGS, and ALDH3A1 were upregulated. mRNA for keratocan (KERA), a cornea-specific proteoglycan, was upregulated more than 10,000 fold. Culture medium from pellets contained high molecular weight keratocan modified with keratan sulfate, a unique molecular component of corneal stroma. These results show hES cells can be induced to differentiate into keratocytes in vitro. Pluripotent stem cells, therefore, may provide a renewable source of material for development of treatment of corneal stromal opacities. © 2013 Chan et al

    Phaeochrornocytorna: A Case Report

    A 52-year-old man presented with a 4-year history of paroxysmal attacks of anxiety, giddiness, palpitation, sweating, and severe headache. These symptoms were associated with sudden increases in his blood pressure; and a provisional diagnosis of phaeochromocytoma was made. Collections of urine were submitted for catecholamine assay. One collection showed a slight increase in catecholamines but the rest were normal, including a collection made after a provocation test, using histamine 0,025 mg intravenously. The histamine test did, however, cause systolic and diastolic blood pressure to rise by 20 mmHg. As he was mildly hypertensive between paroxysms, a phentolamine test was carried out, utilising 5 mg well diluted, intravenously, over 5 minutes under basal conditions. This, too, was negative. An aortogram failed to demonstrate convincingly tumour vascularisation, but there was a mild hypertensive crisis during this examination. At laparotomy, a single phaeochromocytoma was found in the right adrenal gland, and was successfully removed. Recovery was uneventful and the patient was discharged, normotensive and not requiring hypotensive therapy, though mild hypertension has developed since. No residual catecholamine activity has been detected. The preparation of the patient for surgery and the control of operative complications are described, and the salient diagnostic features of phaeochromocytoma are briefly discussed.S. Afr. Med.     Dark Matter, Muon g-2 and Other SUSY Constraints

    Recent developments constraining the SUSY parameter space are reviewed within the framework of SUGRA GUT models. The WMAP data is seen to reduce the error in the density of cold dark matter by about a factor of four, implying that the lightest stau is only 5 -10 GeV heavier than the lightest neutralino when m_0, m_{1/2} < 1 TeV. The CMD-2 re-analysis of their data has reduced the disagreement between the Standard Model prediction and the Brookhaven measurement of the muon magnetic moment to 1.9 sigma, while using the tau decay data plus CVC, the disagreement is 0.7 sigma. (However, the two sets of data remain inconsistent at the 2.9 sigma level.) The recent Belle and BABAR measurements of the B -> phi K CP violating parameters and branching ratios are discussed. They are analyzed theoretically within the BBNS improved factorization method. The CP parameters are in disagreement with the Standard Model at the 2.7 sigma level, and the branching ratios are low by a factor of two or more over most of the parameter space. It is shown that both anomalies can naturally be accounted for by adding a non-universal cubic soft breaking term at M_G mixing the second and third generations.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, plenary talk at Beyond The Desert '03, Castle Ringberg, Germany, June 9, 2003.     A role for topographic cues in the organization of collagenous matrix by corneal fibroblasts and stem cells

    Human corneal fibroblasts (HCF) and corneal stromal stem cells (CSSC) each secrete and organize a thick stroma-like extracellular matrix in response to different substrata, but neither cell type organizes matrix on tissue-culture polystyrene. This study compared cell differentiation and extracellular matrix secreted by these two cell types when they were cultured on identical substrata, polycarbonate Transwell filters. After 4 weeks in culture, both cell types upregulated expression of genes marking differentiated keratocytes (KERA, CHST6, AQP1, B3GNT7). Absolute expression levels of these genes and secretion of keratan sulfate proteoglycans were significantly greater in CSSC than HCF. Both cultures produced extensive extracellular matrix of aligned collagen fibrils types I and V, exhibiting cornea-like lamellar structure. Unlike HCF, CSSC produced little matrix in the presence of serum. Construct thickness and collagen organization was enhanced by TGF-ÎČ3. Scanning electron microscopic examination of the polycarbonate membrane revealed shallow parallel grooves with spacing of 200-300 nm, similar to the topography of aligned nanofiber substratum which we previously showed to induce matrix organization by CSSC. These results demonstrate that both corneal fibroblasts and stromal stem cells respond to a specific pattern of topographical cues by secreting highly organized extracellular matrix typical of corneal stroma. The data also suggest that the potential for matrix secretion and organization may not be directly related to the expression of molecular markers used to identify differentiated keratocytes. © 2014 Karamichos et al

    Surrogate-based optimization of tidal turbine arrays: a case study for the Faro-OlhĂŁo inlet

    This paper presents a study for estimating the size of a tidal turbine array for the Faro-OlhĂŁo Inlet (Potugal) using a surrogate optimization approach. The method compromises problem formulation, hydro-morphodynamic modelling, surrogate construction and validation, and constraint optimization. A total of 26 surrogates were built using linear RBFs as a function of two design variables: number of rows in the array and Tidal Energy Converters (TECs) per row. Surrogates describe array performance and environmental effects associated with hydrodynamic and morphological aspects of the multi inlet lagoon. After validation, surrogate models were used to formulate a constraint optimization model.     Electrochemical recovery of lithium-ion battery materials from molten salts by microstructural characterization using X-ray imaging

    Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) guarantees the conservation of important metal resources by reducing demands on raw supply and offsetting the energy and environmental costs associated with its manufacture. Employing a molten salt as a solvent for extraction affords a much greener and simpler route to metal recovery by electrochemical means. The current mechanistic understanding of the electrochemical recovery of metals in molten salts needs to be improved for the process to be optimized. X-ray computed tomography offers a non-destructive approach for 3D microstructure visualization and subsequent quantification. Here, we study the electrochemical deposition of recovered cobalt metal from lithium cobalt oxide, LiCoO2 in LiCl-KCl eutectic (LKE). This diagnostic approach has been applied to LiCoO2-LKE samples before and after electrolysis at 450°C, yielding key insights into the morphological evolution of product formation
