The estimation of neutrino fluxes produced by proton-proton collisions at TeV of the LHC
Intense and collimated neutrino beams are produced by charm and beauty
particle decays from proton-proton collisions at the LHC. A neutrino experiment
would be run parasitically without interrupting the LHC physics program during
the collider run. We estimate the neutrino fluxes from proton-proton collisions
at TeV of the LHC with the designed luminosity, 10^{34} \lumi.
By mounting about 200 tons of fiducial volume of a neutrino detector at 300
\m away from the interaction point, about 150,000 of charged current neutrino
events per year can be observable.Comment: 8 pages, Accepted in JHE
LHC Searches for Non-Chiral Weakly Charged Multiplets
Because the TeV-scale to be probed at the Large Hadron Collider should shed
light on the naturalness, hierarchy, and dark matter problems, most searches to
date have focused on new physics signatures motivated by possible solutions to
these puzzles. In this paper, we consider some candidates for new states that
although not well-motivated from this standpoint are obvious possibilities that
current search strategies would miss. In particular we consider vector
representations of fermions in multiplets of with a lightest neutral
state. Standard search strategies would fail to find such particles because of
the expected small one-loop-level splitting between charged and neutral states.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure
Relic densities including Sommerfeld enhancements in the MSSM
We have developed a general formalism to compute Sommerfeld enhancement (SE)
factors for a multi-state system of fermions, in all possible spin
configurations and with generic long-range interactions. We show how to include
such SE effects in an accurate calculation of the thermal relic density for
WIMP dark matter candidates. We apply the method to the MSSM and perform a
numerical study of the relic abundance of neutralinos with arbitrary
composition and including the SE due to the exchange of the W and Z bosons,
photons and Higgses. We find that the relic density can be suppressed by a
factor of a few in a seizable region of the parameter space, mostly for
Wino-like neutralino with mass of a few TeV, and up to an order of magnitude
close to a resonance.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures; table 1 corrected and rearranged, numerical

Asymmetric Origin for Gravitino Relic Density in the Hybrid Gravity-Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking
We propose the hybrid gravity-gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking where the
gravitino mass is about several GeV. The strong constraints on supersymmetry
viable parameter space from the CMS and ATLAS experiments at the LHC can be
relaxed due to the heavy colored supersymmetric particles, and it is consistent
with null results in the dark matter (DM) direct search experiments such as
XENON100. In particular, the possible maximal flavor and CP violations from the
relatively small gravity mediation may naturally account for the recent LHCb
anomaly. In addition, because the gravitino mass is around the asymmetric DM
mass, we propose the asymmetric origin of the gravitino relic density and solve
the cosmological coincident problem on the DM and baryon densities \Omega_{\rm
DM}:\Omega_{B}\approx 5:1. The gravitino relic density arises from asymmetric
metastable particle (AMP) late decay. However, we show that there is no AMP
candidate in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (SM) due to the robust
gaugino/Higgsino mediated wash-out effects. Interestingly, AMP can be realized
in the well motivated supersymmetric SMs with vector-like particles or
continuous U(1)_R symmetry. Especially, the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass
can be lifted in the supersymmetric SMs with vector-like particles.Comment: RevTex4, 21 pages, 1 figure, minor corrections, JHEP versio
Light dark matter and dark force at colliders
Light Dark Matter, GeV, with sizable direct detection rate is an
interesting and less explored scenario. Collider searches can be very powerful,
such as through the channel in which a pair of dark matter particle are
produced in association with a jet. It is a generic possibility that the
mediator of the interaction between DM and the nucleus will also be accessible
at the Tevatron and the LHC. Therefore, collider search of the mediator can
provide a more comprehensive probe of the dark matter and its interactions. In
this article, to demonstrate the complementarity of these two approaches, we
focus on the possibility of the mediator being a new gauge boson, which
is probably the simplest model which allows a large direct detection cross
section for a light dark matter candidate. We combine searches in the
monojet+MET channel and dijet resonance search for the mediator. We find that
for the mass of between 250 GeV and 4 TeV, resonance searches at the
colliders provide stronger constraints on this model than the monojet+MET
searches.Comment: 23 pages and 14 figure
Extracellular ATP released by osteoblasts is a key local inhibitor of bone mineralisation
Previous studies have shown that exogenous ATP (>1”M) prevents bone formation in vitro by blocking mineralisation of the collagenous matrix. This effect is thought to be mediated via both P2 receptor-dependent pathways and a receptor-independent mechanism (hydrolysis of ATP to produce the mineralisation inhibitor pyrophosphate, PPi). Osteoblasts are also known to release ATP constitutively. To determine whether this endogenous ATP might exert significant biological effects, bone-forming primary rat osteoblasts were cultured with 0.5-2.5U/ml apyrase (which sequentially hydrolyses ATP to ADP to AMP + 2Pi). Addition of 0.5U/ml apyrase to osteoblast culture medium degraded extracellular ATP to <1% of control levels within 2 minutes; continuous exposure to apyrase maintained this inhibition for up to 14 days. Apyrase treatment for the first 72 hours of culture caused small decreases (â€25%) in osteoblast number, suggesting a role for endogenous ATP in stimulating cell proliferation. Continuous apyrase treatment for 14 days (â„0.5U/ml) increased mineralisation of bone nodules by up to 3-fold. Increases in bone mineralisation were also seen when osteoblasts were cultured with the ATP release inhibitors, NEM and brefeldin A, as well as with P2X1 and P2X7 receptor antagonists. Apyrase decreased alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) activity by up to 60%, whilst increasing the activity of the PPi-generating ecto-nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterases (NPPs) up to 2.7-fold. Both collagen production and adipocyte formation were unaffected. These data suggest that nucleotides released by osteoblasts in bone could act locally, via multiple mechanisms, to limit mineralisation
Magnetic Fluffy Dark Matter
We explore extensions of inelastic Dark Matter and Magnetic inelastic Dark
Matter where the WIMP can scatter to a tower of heavier states. We assume a
WIMP mass GeV and a constant splitting between
successive states keV. For the
spin-independent scattering scenario we find that the direct experiments CDMS
and XENON strongly constrain most of the DAMA/LIBRA preferred parameter space,
while for WIMPs that interact with nuclei via their magnetic moment a region of
parameter space corresponding to GeV and keV
is allowed by all the present direct detection constraints.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, added comments about magnetic moment form factor

A retrospective and agenda for future research on Chinese outward foreign direct investment
Our original paper âThe determinants of Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investmentâ was the first
theoretically based empirical analysis of the phenomenon. It utilised internalisation theory to show that
Chinese state-owned firms reacted to home country market imperfections to surmount barriers to
foreign entry arising from naivety and the lack of obvious ownership advantages, leveraging
institutional factors including favourable policy stimuli. This special theory explained outward foreign
direct investment (OFDI) but provided surprises. These included the apparent appetite for risk evinced
by these early investors, causing us to conjecture that domestic market imperfections, particularly in
the domestic capital market, might be responsible. The article stimulated a massive subsequent, largely
successful, research effort on emerging country multinationals. In this Retrospective article we review
some of the main strands of research that ensued, for the insight they offer for the theme of our
commentary. Our theme is that theoretical development can only come through embracing yet more
challenging, different, and new contexts, and we make suggestions for future research directions
Normal modes and discovery of high-order cross-frequencies in the DBV white dwarf GD 358
We present a detailed mode identification performed on the 1994 Whole Earth Telescope (WET) run on GD 358. The results are compared with that obtained for the same star from the 1990 WET data. The two temporal spectra show very few qualitative differences, although amplitude changes are seen in most modes, including the disappearance of the mode identified as k=14 in the 1990 data. The excellent coverage and signal-to-noise ratio obtained during the 1994 run lead to the secure identification of combination frequencies up to fourth order, i.e. peaks that are sums or differences of up to four parent frequencies, including a virtually complete set of second-order frequencies, as expected from harmonic distortion. We show how the third-order frequencies are expected to affect the triplet structure of the normal modes by back-interacting with them. Finally, a search for â=2 modes was unsuccessful, not verifying the suspicion that such modes had been uncovered in the 1990 data set
Cerebral amyloidâÎČ load is associated with neurodegeneration and gliosis: Mediation by pâtau and interactions with risk factors early in the Alzheimer's continuum
Introduction: The association between cerebral amyloidâÎČ accumulation and downstream CSF biomarkers is not fully understood, particularly in asymptomatic stages. /
Methods: In 318 cognitively unimpaired participants, we assessed the association between amyloidâÎČ PET (Centiloid), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of several pathophysiological pathways. Interactions by Alzheimer's disease risk factors (age, sex and APOEâΔ4), and the mediation effect of tau and neurodegeneration were also investigated. /
Results: Centiloids were positively associated with CSF biomarkers of tau pathology (pâtau), neurodegeneration (tâtau, NfL), synaptic dysfunction (neurogranin) and neuroinflammation (YKLâ40, GFAP, sTREM2), presenting interactions with age (pâtau, tâtau, neurogranin) and sex (sTREM2, NfL). Most of these associations were mediated by pâtau, except for NfL. The interaction between sex and amyloidâÎČ on sTREM2 and NfL was also tauâindependent. /
Discussion: Early amyloidâÎČ accumulation has a tauâindependent effect on neurodegeneration and a tauâdependent effect on neuroinflammation. Besides, sex has a modifier effect on these associations independent of tau
