Anomalous structure in the single particle spectrum of the fractional quantum Hall effect
The two-dimensional electron system (2DES) is a unique laboratory for the
physics of interacting particles. Application of a large magnetic field
produces massively degenerate quantum levels known as Landau levels. Within a
Landau level the kinetic energy of the electrons is suppressed, and
electron-electron interactions set the only energy scale. Coulomb interactions
break the degeneracy of the Landau levels and can cause the electrons to order
into complex ground states. In the high energy single particle spectrum of this
system, we observe salient and unexpected structure that extends across a wide
range of Landau level filling fractions. The structure appears only when the
2DES is cooled to very low temperature, indicating that it arises from delicate
ground state correlations. We characterize this structure by its evolution with
changing electron density and applied magnetic field. We present two possible
models for understanding these observations. Some of the energies of the
features agree qualitatively with what might be expected for composite
Fermions, which have proven effective for interpreting other experiments in
this regime. At the same time, a simple model with electrons localized on
ordered lattice sites also generates structure similar to those observed in the
experiment. Neither of these models alone is sufficient to explain the
observations across the entire range of densities measured. The discovery of
this unexpected prominent structure in the single particle spectrum of an
otherwise thoroughly studied system suggests that there exist core features of
the 2DES that have yet to be understood.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure
Higher-Energy Composite Fermion Levels in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect
Even though composite fermions in the fractional quantum Hall liquid are well established, it is not yet known up to what energies they remain intact. We probe the high-energy spectrum of the 1/3 liquid directly by resonant inelastic light scattering, and report the observation of a large number of new collective modes. Supported by our theoretical calculations, we associate these with transitions across two or more composite fermions levels. The formation of quasiparticle levels up to high energies is direct evidence for the robustness of topological order in the fractional quantum Hall effect
Open-book examination in analytical chemistry: A valuable approach that promotes inclusivity in education, as seen by students
An open-book examination is a valuable approach that promotes inclusivity in education by placing greater emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and the practical application of knowledge, rather than mere rote memorization. It enables students to consult the course materials, textbooks, and additional resources during the exam, thus creating an equitable platform for all learners. This brief communication delves into the students’ perception of open-book examinations within the realm of analytical chemistry, a subject taught as part of the undergraduate chemistry programme. Both surveys and individual interviews conducted by the researchers were used in a complementary way as methods for data collection. Thematic and content analysis of surveys and interview outcomes were subsequently undertaken. By exploring the viewpoints, we gained valuable insights into the advantages and challenges associated with implementing open-book assessments in this specific field.

Co-evolution of density and topology in a simple model of city formation
We study the influence that population density and the road network have on
each others' growth and evolution. We use a simple model of formation and
evolution of city roads which reproduces the most important empirical features
of street networks in cities. Within this framework, we explicitely introduce
the topology of the road network and analyze how it evolves and interact with
the evolution of population density. We show that accessibility issues -pushing
individuals to get closer to high centrality nodes- lead to high density
regions and the appearance of densely populated centers. In particular, this
model reproduces the empirical fact that the density profile decreases
exponentially from a core district. In this simplified model, the size of the
core district depends on the relative importance of transportation and rent

The rise of dentine hypersensitivity and tooth wear in an ageing population
Our understanding of the aetiology of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) has changed dramatically over the past few decades. It is no longer an enigma, but other problems exist. The prevalence of DH in the world and in particular in the UK is increasing, predominately due to increases in tooth wear and the erosive dietary intake in the younger population. DH is increasingly reported in all age groups and is shown to provide clinical indication of an active erosive tooth wear. As the population ages and possibly retain teeth for longer, the likelihood of tooth wear and DH could increase. This paper describes the prevalence, aetiology, diagnosis and management of DH in relation to tooth wear, which work together through a surface phenomenon. The aim is to raise awareness of the conditions and to help inform a prevention strategy in an ageing population, which starts from younger age groups to reduce disease into older age
Geospatial resources for supporting data standards, guidance and best practice in health informatics
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The 1980s marked the occasion when Geographical Information System (GIS) technology was broadly introduced into the geo-spatial community through the establishment of a strong GIS industry. This technology quickly disseminated across many countries, and has now become established as an important research, planning and commercial tool for a wider community that includes organisations in the public and private health sectors.</p> <p>The broad acceptance of GIS technology and the nature of its functionality have meant that numerous datasets have been created over the past three decades. Most of these datasets have been created independently, and without any structured documentation systems in place. However, search and retrieval systems can only work if there is a mechanism for datasets existence to be discovered and this is where proper metadata creation and management can greatly help.</p> <p>This situation must be addressed through support mechanisms such as Web-based portal technologies, metadata editor tools, automation, metadata standards and guidelines and collaborative efforts with relevant individuals and organisations. Engagement with data developers or administrators should also include a strategy of identifying the benefits associated with metadata creation and publication.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>The establishment of numerous Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs), and other Internet resources, is a testament to the recognition of the importance of supporting good data management and sharing practices across the geographic information community. These resources extend to health informatics in support of research, public services and teaching and learning.</p> <p>This paper identifies many of these resources available to the UK academic health informatics community. It also reveals the reluctance of many spatial data creators across the wider UK academic community to use these resources to create and publish metadata, or deposit their data in repositories for sharing.</p> <p>The Go-Geo! service is introduced as an SDI developed to provide UK academia with the necessary resources to address the concerns surrounding metadata creation and data sharing. The Go-Geo! portal, Geodoc metadata editor tool, ShareGeo spatial data repository, and a range of other support resources, are described in detail.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This paper describes a variety of resources available for the health research and public health sector to use for managing and sharing their data. The Go-Geo! service is one resource which offers an SDI for the eclectic range of disciplines using GIS in UK academia, including health informatics.</p> <p>The benefits of data management and sharing are immense, and in these times of cost restraints, these resources can be seen as solutions to find cost savings which can be reinvested in more research.</p
Interactions and potential implications of Plasmodium falciparum-hookworm coinfection in different age groups in south-central Côte d'Ivoire
BACKGROUND: Given the widespread distribution of Plasmodium and helminth infections, and similarities of ecological requirements for disease transmission, coinfection is a common phenomenon in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere in the tropics. Interactions of Plasmodium falciparum and soil-transmitted helminths, including immunological responses and clinical outcomes of the host, need further scientific inquiry. Understanding the complex interactions between these parasitic infections is of public health relevance considering that control measures targeting malaria and helminthiases are going to scale.METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in April 2010 in infants, young school-aged children, and young non-pregnant women in south-central Côte d'Ivoire. Stool, urine, and blood samples were collected and subjected to standardized, quality-controlled methods. Soil-transmitted helminth infections were identified and quantified in stool. Finger-prick blood samples were used to determine Plasmodium spp. infection, parasitemia, and hemoglobin concentrations. Iron, vitamin A, riboflavin, and inflammation status were measured in venous blood samples.PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Multivariate regression analysis revealed specific association between infection and demographic, socioeconomic, host inflammatory and nutritional factors. Non-pregnant women infected with P. falciparum had significantly lower odds of hookworm infection, whilst a significant positive association was found between both parasitic infections in 6- to 8-year-old children. Coinfected children had lower odds of anemia and iron deficiency than their counterparts infected with P. falciparum alone.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings suggest that interaction between P. falciparum and light-intensity hookworm infections vary with age and, in school-aged children, may benefit the host through preventing iron deficiency anemia. This observation warrants additional investigation to elucidate the mechanisms and consequences of coinfections, as this information could have important implications when implementing integrated control measures against malaria and helminthiases
